I love reading short stories, and the flavor of the old West shines through in this collection. I have to admit I would have given this book 4 1/2 stars because a few stories left me hanging -- with questions about motivation... But unique characters such as outlaw Wesley Quaid and Texas Ranger Jud Nelson more than made up for that. I'm looking forward to reading a full novel by Matt Pizzolato with these two pitted against each other!
I liked this quite a lot. It was an easy read. The stories are relatively clear cut and straightforward. The writing is smooth and polished and doesn't get in the way of the story. The characters are interesting. One or two of the stories seemed like they could have been a little longer in order to be fully developed but that was a pretty minor quibble.
The Wanted Man by Matthew Pizzolato is a compilation of short stories set in the old west. While I enjoyed the opening stories, where this novella really finds it's feet is during A Stagecoach for Sally and the subsequent 3 stories. Mr. Pizzolato seizes the reigns and forces the reader to ride through a character rich trail involving the intriguing Texas Ranger, Jud Nelson; the mysterious Gray Rider; and the outlaw who you can't help but root for Wesley Quaid.
