I'm a huge fan of William Pene du Bois, who illustrated but didn't author this book. It's a very sweet story about a wooden carousel horse who longs to be real. The illustrations are excellent.
This was one of the books I read over and over again that my parents inherited with our house. A nice but fairly typical picture book.

However, I found the pictures of the winking kids on the inside covers to be incredibly creepy. I think they were meant to represent the pictures on the outside of the carousel.

Here's an example:

Oh how I love this book!

I've had this in my collection since the dawn of time. Its currently held together with tape and has some hand drawn illustrations that I added as a child (in crayon!), but its still one of my most treasured books.

My mom refers to this book as "One eye open, one eye shut". It took me ages to figure out why.

One of the most beautiful childrens books ever. I read this book and another very good childrens book, "The little Ballerina from Mallorca", some 40 years ago. I tried other books by Bonzon, but they were not nearly as compelling as the Flying Horse and The little Ballerina.
Very recommendable!

This was my favorite book as a child. I would cry and cry every time my mom read it to me. I can't wait to read it again.
