This is third Mary Stewart book I found at the library. Not as enjoyable as the previous two. Good characters, but practically no plot at all. The heroine, a Cambridge professor/poet, goes to a remote Scottish island for peace and quiet and of course runs across a crime in progress. Trouble is, the mystery pretty much solves itself and the whole book's barely more than a hundred pages long. Not really worth bothering with.

Rose gos to the quiet Scottish island of Moila to find some quiet time to write. But after only a few days she finds not one but two strange men in her kitchen one stormy night. After that her poetry looses some of its luster.

Every time I pick up this book I read it again. And every time it is just as good.

I wanted to read a Mary Stewart book because a popular author, I forget who, said she was one of her role models.
A short book that gets right to the plot. It is not a formula mystery & you do not know who until th end. But it keeps you on your toes.

Stewart uses nice imagery but her plot is anemic. The story has potential but the action never really takes off. It was a disappointing read considering her previous stuff.

I was let down by the lack of real mystery or romance, but the setting in the Scottish highlands and flow of the writing made it nice for a one-time read.

recommends it for: fans of mystery and romance, Mary Stewart is the queen! Less throbbing than Harlequin though :)
I got this one for Christmas from my cousin several years ago, and I still haven't read it!
