Tamar Yoseloff had published two previous collections, Sweetheart and Barnard's Star, but neither had prepared me for the darkness and edge of this one. The cover picture, black spiky iron railings on a brooding pink background, is a hint of the mood inside, where even a woman with a pet chihuahua holds it "like a delicacy" ("Vaporetto in Winter"). Places are seen out of season, love poems (or poems about love) hold a sting in the tail, like "Silk":
