Monet Paints a Day
A glimpse into a day of Claude Monets life shows the painter racing against changing light, the incoming tide, and the elements as he paints an ocean scene in the plein-air style. Based on a true incident, the story is enhanced by brief facts about Impressionist painting, Monets life, and excerpts from the painters letters and notes.

As many artists do, while on vacation in Etretat, France, Claude Monet spends much of his time painting, trying to capture the feel of the ocean waves and the enormous arch that towers above them. On one particular day described by this picture book, he is so immersed in his painting that he fails to pay attention to the surf until the water swells, covering him and his artwork. Humbled by nature's power, Monet contemplates all the work he has lost, but realizes that he can start again the next...more
Time for another great picture book! This one is Monet Paints a Day by Julie Danneberg, illustrated by Caitlin Heimerl. Published by Charlesbridge, this PB is so wonderful, I just had to share it.
The story revolves around a letter written to his fiancee Alice, while he was on vacation in Etretat, France. The book follows Monet as he tells about his day and what he painted, eventually The Waves at the Manneporte, 1885. All through the book and then at the end, are facts about Monet and the impres...more

Told in the first person by Monet, this book explores his painting process when he was on holiday in Etretat, France. Children waited for him when he leaves his hotel, wanting to help carry his canvasses to the seaside. When they reached the strip of sand at the bottom of the cliffs, the canvasses were placed against the cliff. Monet was unique in painting right in the middle of the landscape rather than sketching and then finishing the painting in his studio. Because of his unique approach, he...more
A day in the life of Claude Monet when he was working on his paintings in Etretat on the coast of France. Told from Monet's point of view, with a parallel informational text that gives details about Monet's life, background information, and painting techniques. The way he worked on multiple canvases of the same thing at one time, going between them depending on the time of day, is fascinating.
good - i would read again. I love the lyrical quality of this book. It makes the painter, Monet, very accessible for children. It takes a snapshot of one day in this famous painter's life. Plus I loved the added information about his life in the boxes on the bottom of the page. In addition, the author's notes in the back of the book really add to the quality of the overall book.
This would make a perfect gift for your favorite young artist. Come meet Julie Danneberg at our Teen & Children's Authors Open House.
