Gone is the contained, brooding, dream-prone atmopshere of his earlier stories; instead Uncle's Dream is narrated with firm objectivity, combining satire, social reportage, puppet theatre and farce in its comic send-up of small-town manners and morals.

Dostoyevsky's inspiration for The Meek Girl came from a newspaper report on the suicide of a seamstress who plunged from a

Uncle's Dream

But all things die, Zina, even our memories, and our good and noble feelings die also, and in their place comes reason.

This is a story about dreams and longings of young people, about family honor, about deceit. It had a bunch of references to Shakespeare, rightfully so, because this novella reminded me of Shakespeare's theatrical comedies. I absolutely loved this story and would definitely read it a

For Uncle's Dream: This novella, written soon after Dostoevsky’s time in Siberia, takes a surprisingly comic approach to its subject matter, surprising given the grand drama of Dostoevsky’s most famous works. That said, the comedy works pretty well here, as Dostoevsky brings together a cast of characters that bring big and conflicting personalities while set in a small provincial town.

The story surrounds the daughter—Zena—of the biggest town gossip—Marya Alexandrovna—and Zena’s potential marriag

It was fascinating to see the great heavyweight of the philosophical novel doing farce in what is a very humorous and lighthearted essay of small town life as Czarist RussIa and the old aristocracy slipped into decline amid winds of change blowing in from western Europe. The book's poetics are more like those of a play than any of Dostoyevsky's more widely venerated novels. Virtually everything is externalized, as it must be in theater; and the characters' repeated, usually phobic, references to ...more

"Uncle's Dream" is a sly, ironic take on the village marriage tale in which much jockeying is made around a newly rich prince by people with not much to do. But Dostoyevsky puts a twist on it - the prince is an old doddering fool, the mother-in-law-to-be is really nasty, the sweet, innocent girl is neither, and there is not really a functioning relationship in the whole story. It's like Dostoyevsky knew the whole Kanye West/Kim Kardashian thing beforehand.

Impian Pamanku tak menyajikan konflik besar. Dinamikanya pun tak terlalu menggelegar. Khas karya klasik.

My husband and I read this book years ago...we blew threw it in one night taking turns reading it out loud. One of the funniest books I have ever read. Of course, if I remember correctly, there Is a serious point to the story about humans and our behavior, but I love the way it is communicated. I will read this book again someday.

Recommends it for: Fans of Golden Age Russian novels.
A rollicking comedy of manners, set among the idle rich (and those who want to be) of a small Russian village. Kinda Dostoyevsky meets Jane Austen meets P.G. Wodehouse. Not what you'd expect from Dostoyevsky, I think, especially as this was his first book after being released from a Siberian prison. A sick, crippled, forgetful old man suddenly inherits a fortune. Surprise, surprise, now all the young women in town suddenly want to marry him, hoping he'll die soon and leave behind a wealthy widow ...more

MY first experience with Dostoevsky, i guess it was wrong to choose this book as a first try to read Russian literature, because its not my only first read for him but also his first work ..this was clear for me from the beginning as the book didn't match my expectations, i expected something better from such a well known and praised writer, though its very obvious that Dostoevsky mastered the art of developing characters, yet the plot got boring more than once and it took me so long to finish t ...more

Every time I read Russian lit it just hits me like an anvil. All the memories of the talks and mannerisms of the adults i used to hear as a kid become more vivid it is like developing photographs. Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky (Russian: Фёдор Михайлович Достоевский), sometimes transliterated Dostoevsky, was a Russian novelist, journalist, and short-story writer whose psychological penetration into the human soul had a profound influence on the 20th century novel.

Dostoyevsky was the second son of a former army doctor. He was educated at home and at a private school. Shortly after the death
