This was surprisingly lame, coming from no less a literary giant than Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote these stories as if they were intended for a second-rate boy's adventure magazine. The concept of a club for people who want to committ suicide is solid and reminiscient of something Hitchcock might have come up with, but Stevenson unfortunately does very little with it. The idea itself is ripe with potential moral conundrums and dramatic possibility, but Setevenson glazes over all of that, de ...more

The story's premise sounds better than actually reading it. The possibilities that the story's premise should explore are not so much as touched. The characters are beforehand decidedly good or evil no matter the events of the story, which I think pulls the story down more than it helps. Each of the short stories in this trilogy stands on it's own but when strung together feels more like a plot of convenience than the telling of a story- but I suppose that is the purpose of Victorian novels... The Suicide Club is only 59 pages long and only contains three connected short stories, but, of course, it was fabulous, as all Stevenson's writing is in my humble opinion. Strikes me as imitative of Poe but a little less dark. A fast-paced, easy read, it nonetheless contains some interesting comments on the body as object, social atavism, and foreign relations that merit scholarly consideration.

The adventures of the godly Prince Florizel and his comrade Colonel Geraldine are a delight to rival even Holmes and Watson...and that's not a small statement. Wish Stevenson had written more of these!!

"Meh" was what i thought after reading this book, I honestly thought that this would be a dark creepy story about a gentleman's club where they go to kill each other, don't get me wrong it was, for about a page or something.

We never knew anything about the leader of the club or if there are other clubs or anything about it besides how they choose the one who dies and the one who kills, and we didn't even witnessed any killing, like, why the hell is the book even called "The Suicide Club"?.

I gues

I found the stories, overall, unremarkable, but the concept was very good. I liked the cream tarts story the most. Without the odd resolution of this first story, the other stories would not have existed. Perhaps that's what I didn't like about the book—the other two stories seemed pointless. It left me wondering why Prince Florizel would make such a bad decision at the end of the first story that would enable these other stories to take place. I've read it twice because I found it difficult to ...more

I've been slowly working my way through an old 'Works of Robert Louis Stevenson' book, and this is presented therein as the first of the stories from the New Arabian Nights collection. Stevenson proudly lifts from the classic Arabian Nights, in making this a tale of a king-in-disguise (a la Haroun al-Rashid) and his trusty henchman. The king is out with his comrade, and they encounter a strange young man liberally dispensing cream tarts to bar patrons. They engage him in conversation, and he sho ...more

Been a while since I last reviewed a book. Hm.

The story follows Prince Florizel of Bohemia and his friend Colonel Geraldine, who encounter a young man giving away cream tarts. They soon learn that he has completely lost the will to live, but cannot end it himself. So he joined the Suicide Club, which is literally what it sounds like. It is a club where its participants get a chance to have an "accident" staged that will kill them. The role of the executor is given to one of the participants as

As a whole the original story was quite gripping and a good read. Then *spoiler kinda* things went downhill quickly. Like, 'the story was due and the plot still unresolved so I'm going to just end it,' downhill. It left me wanting to throw the book at the wall. But, reflecting on it as a whole I was quite on edge until the last few pages so 3 stars.

Three short stories loosely connected by a core of characters - Prince Florizel of Bohemia and his loyal aide and companion Colonel Geraldine, and the existence of the Suicide Club. While the endings are far too abrupt and not particularly complex, the stories are early thriller/detective stories, wonderful for fans of the genre.

It was a decent story, but what was more striking was how the cultural norms when this book was written detests the very concept of assisted suicide as something heinously vile. Now it is something in our present day and age that we deem worthy of discussion. It's definitely something that will give the reader pause.

Version française: Le club du suicide

1882

The Suicide Club: an intriguing title composed of three short stories. The first two, directly dealing with the 'suicide club' phenomenon were great. Third one was a bit of an anticlimax, therefore only a 'quite good' rating.

First of all, let me just say that the only book I'd read by Mr. Stevenson before this one was "The Treasure Island" in English (I read the Suicide Club in Portuguese) and goddamn, I understood about 1/4 of it. This one was much easier. I won't say more interesting because they have completely different stories, even if you can find some similarities between some characters.

Anyway, when I started the book I was liking it, but not loving it. Still, I continued to read it, since it was an easy rea

I read this book after seeing the 1936 movie, Trouble For Two, starring Robert Montgomery and Frank Morgan, which is based on the three connected stories of The Suicide Club. As others have said, the first story is the strongest and could have been expanded. I also found the middle story - The Physician and the Saratoga Trunk - compelling. The last story which ties together the other two, seemed a bit rushed at the end and didn't really explain everything. It's like Stevenson originally wrote th ...more

Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov.

Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is o
