Every Niemelan has a role to play, from the mermaids who weave towers out of kelp to...more

I haven't been accepting many self-published books for review recently. Not because I don't want to, but because I have so many things piling up on me. Not only do I have books to read and review that I've already accepted or requested, along with books I've bought or been given, but I also have work and friends to keep up with, plus I'll be starting back at school soon. But when I got an email from Ciye Cho asking me to review his book, Florence, my fancy was caught.

I fell in love with this book it started out amazing and not only that but it got right into the action, which is always a plus. It was a fantastic storyline that was fast paced and well put together. The characters were great as well, I enjoyed reading about Florence, Yolee, Kiren, and Rolan. They were all pretty much a great addition to the story. And although the book is full of suspense, and action it also has some romance in it.

You have fun while reading this book, you basically get sucked...more

Unfortunately, it's time for the ruler of Niemela to change and Florence must decide which prince she will be the best ruler. Armed with an assignment, a pad of paper, a few pens and her SeaBrite camera, Florence sets out to "observe" Mermaids Reach.

When I received an email from Ciye a few weeks back, I was more than excited to review his book. I have been in the mood for mermaid books recently, I think because it’s summer time. So I jumped at the chance to read Florence.

This book is unlike any other mermaid book that I have ever read. I honestly don’t know what makes it so different or why it stands out so much, but I will do my best to try and explain.

First, you have the world of Niemela. Everything is beauti...more

Florence is a book by author Ciye Cho that was released just a few days ago on July 1, 2012. When I was first approached by the author to review Florence, I was immediately hooked by just reading the synopsis. The unique storyline and intriguing male leads made me absolutely anxious to start reading- I finished it in about a day!

I love it when I see a character experience growth throughout the course of a novel- Florence is a perfect example of thi...more

This was one fabulous book. From the minute I started it I couldn’t put it down. The world that Cho has created is one I would love to be in. I could envision all of it. It was beautifully describe. Cho obviously knows a lot, or has done a lot of research on the ocean. The merfolks were very believable as characters. I felt like I could swim to the bottom of the ocean to find Niemela and spend time with the people there. Kieran was so charming and disarming in his looks and attitude that you cou...more

A thrilling adventure you won’t want to miss!

Florence Waverly has been kidnapped to become the Mer Prince Kiren’s human familiar. To make matters worse she is thrust in the middle of a war between the Mer and the Darkness. She must fight to survive and choose between two brothers Kiren the charmer and Rolan the loner who pushes her away. I was given the opportunity to review this book by the author himself. I love the idea of a YA paranormal mermaid story because it is very new to me. And now after reading this, I want to find more like it. Everything about this book is just stunning, from the cover to the imagery inside. I am in love. This was an absolute joy.

Our main character Florence is a shy girl who keeps to herself. Everyo...more

This review was originally posted at my blog http://bajanrosabooks.blogspot.com there is an interview with the author posted there as well.

Florence is seventeen and invisible, she has been for most of her life and she likes it that way. She isn't popular and her clothes aren't in the latest fashions so being unnoticed is ideal. On a field trip to a small neighbouring island the unexpected happens and Florence is kidnapped by of all things a monstrous man with purple skin and yellow eyes.

4.5/5 stars, but I like to round up!

I'll admit, I'm not a huge mermaid/merman fan. However, I have read Mr. Cho's debut novel and was blown away by the imagination in portrayed. That in itself was enough to convince me to read "Florence." The fact that the cover is gorgeous didn't hurt, either! (FYI: Mr. Cho does his own artwork.)

Florence is the fish-out-of-water (IN the water) in this story. It's interesting how insistent she is that she wants to return home, where she's as out of place as she...more

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was a fun read. It had a bit of a slow start but once I got into it I couldn't put it down.

Florence Waverly is a plain girl who tries to stay in the shadows. She really doesn't fit in anywhere. She still grieves for her dad and is unwanted by her mother. On a school trip to the beach she finds herself abducted by a mermaid and thrust into their world. And what a world it is. Deep beneath the ocean, breathing with the aid...more

Firstly let me tell you that I have never read a Mermaid book that I have actually liked. And I’ve always thought it was strange because when I was 5 I wanted (desperately) to grow up to be one. So obviously I have nothing against the species. But every book I have read has either been juvenile, unbelievable or lacked any imagination. This book might not have converted me to Team Mermaid. But it has certainly made me a fan.

Florence is a lonely introvert who spends her life on the sidelines looki...more

Florence Waverley is an outsider in her own world. Kids she’s been in the same class with for years still call her the new girl or the quiet one. After being abducted by a merman during a school field trip, Florence finds herself an outsider once more. A human among the merpeople of Niemela – a beautiful underwater world.

In this new world the ideas of work, order and purpose are the three things that Niemelans hold dearest to their hearts. Everyone has their place and is required to work for the...more

Florence has received four shining stars from me!
Ciye Cho is a promising new young adult author and I am so pleased I have gotten the chance to review his debut novel.
I never thought I would like a plot line involving mermaids. I suppose it seemed slightly childish. But, Florence is in no way childish! It is a wonderfully written story full of enchantment and advent...more

Beautifully descriptive, Florence has quickly become one of my favourite mermaid-fantasy books. An intricate world hidden below the sea complements characters motivated by the best of intentions. Refreshingly original, Florence took me on a journey I won't soon forget!

I have always loved the ocean and as a child, I wished with all of my heart to be woken up one day to be told I was secretly a mermaid princess and it was time to go home. Florence has given me a piece of the world I used to dream...more

This is only the second mermaid novel I have read but I have to say it is by far the best! Before starting this book I was in a bit of a reading slump but it managed to pull me out of it. It had me hooked, line and sinker (pun intended).
Cho has created a mesmerizing and enchanting world beneath the sea. This was one of the things I loved about this book; how it was actually set in the mermaids world and not ours. The beautifully vivid descriptions of this world will make you think you are ac...more

I loved this book. I’ve never really read any books about mermaids, but I was intrigued from the start. I love the sea and used to have saltwater fish tanks, so I felt right at home reading about this world and all the corals and fish present. The descriptions were amazing and breathtaking. I always thought it would be difficult for a human to experience a world of mermaids and merman, but the author puts Florence in this world with no discrepancies. Everything makes perfect sense and Cho weaves...more

My Thoughts:

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Ok, so I have to admit I was super hesitant going into this book only because mermaids are not really my thing and the one other book that I read about mermaids really disappointed me. But, Florence was absolutely amazing, this book completely redeemed mermaids with me and I loved this book from beginning to end.

Ciye Cho has an amazing ability to write with words that paint a picture in your head, the descriptions...more

I am a huge fan of mermaids and mermen. So when I got asked to review Florence, I jumped at it. Unfortunately it started off a little shaky for me. At the beginning, Florence is talking about her classmates while on a school trip snorkeling. She calls the girls Nymphs. Now I knew that the book would be about merpeople and all, but when Florence called the girls that I wasn’t sure if she was actually referring to them as (water) Nymphs or if she was figuratively calling them that. And when she sa...more

I guess this is the disclosure part again: I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. But I want to say that the author didn't solicit me to do this. I saw the beautiful book cover on two other blogs, noted they were e-ARC's and tracked the author down and asked for a copy.

The real standout thing in this book is the world building. A lot of recent mermaid books I've read really missed the opportunity to take us to another world. A world that's all the more magical becau...more

The cover art on this book is trulyextraordinaryand I was impressed that Cho himself created the cover. Sadly, my art skills are limited to stick figures andplay dough. A mermaid book is a definite must for this summer season. When it comes to self-published books, I can get a little iffy. But, I'm glad I decided to give this book a try.

Florence is an unusual girl. She basically has no friends, family, or evenacquaintants (a real loner). As a character, I thought that for most of the book, she w...more

I’ve not yet read any mermaid or mermaid like stories. I’ve been a little leery of them because of the whole it’s in water so is the writer’s imagination good enough to pull off an underwater civilization. Thus, my trepidation is easily understood.

It’s beautiful. The world that is. The everyday world that is briefly engaged is, well, everyday. However the environment of the Neimelan described is beautifully created. It could very well exist on the bottom of the ocean somewhere secret from the re...more

2.5/5 stars

As far as paranormal romances go, Florence is unobtrusive and unoffensive. But it feels just like same-old-same old to me.

Florence is your typical misunderstood loner. For years she's been "new girl" and nobody really knows or cares about her. She' invisible to her classmates. However, everything changes on a school field trip when she's kidnapped by mermaids.

The mermaids take her to be Prince Kiren's familiar, something that is not really explained, but never mind she's deemed inappr...more

Well, when I entered the giveaway for this book, I didn't know what to expect. Since the cover was incredible, don't you think so? Just look at the blend between the colors and how the face covers almost 3/4 of the cover. The cover is very unique, the girl is a resemblance of the main character and the cover is an illustration not a photograph. It's not just some girl with a fluffy dress and a tiara or some boy walking through a damaged pitch-black world, it's beautiful. The blurb is captivatin...more

When I was approached by author Ciye Cho to read and review the first book in his new series...well, I was prepared for a wild ride. One thing I learned from Ciye's first series? He has one wicked imagination! You know what? I was pleasantly surprised by this new series. I found myself totally immersed in his world of Mermaids and Mermen. The world of Niemela and these characters were so easy to adore.

Florence was not only believable, but likable too. And one thing I loved is that we see her gr...more

I really wasn't sure what I'd make of this book; I'd thought for a while it would be cool to read about mermaids, but it could all go so wrong and turn into a Disney's Little Mermaid rip off. Happily, that didn't happen with Florence, and I was sucked into an exciting new world.

Florence is an outsider at school, and in life generally. Her father died when she was young, leaving her a burden to those who would sooner she wasn't there. She has virtually no friends and all in all, it isn't too muc...more

THREE WORDS: Enchanting, Lush, Mesmerizing

MY REVIEW: A few weeks ago I reviewed another mermaid book that was unfortunately a miss, so I was very happy to discover a mermaid story that is a great big hit! Ciye Cho’s Florence is a refreshing and captivating mermaid tale that had me enthralled from beginning to end.

After the death of her father, seventeen year old Florence Waverly doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere: not at school or even in her mother’s posh world. During a class field tr...more
