This is a wonderful book. I came across it in the course of some research but I would read it anyway. As a picture of a lost world it is astounding, and crushes the kind of stereotypes we are used to from novels and - dare I say - TV programmes about the same period. (The author is writing in 1922 but he is remembering a long period going back to the beginning of the 19th C)

The Rev Morris had a particular interest in dialect and makes many attempts to transcribe the actual speech of his parishio
