After reading the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I decided that it was time to read another of his works.

This book was about Veronika and how she had decided to die, and attempted suicide. She awakens from her attempt to realize that the attempt was not successful, but that she had cause damage to her heart with the medication that she had tried to overdose on and that she would die within days.

Veronika uses her remaining time to reflect and through her own self-discovery she realizes that...more

I read The Alchemist and didn't like it. I read Veronika Decides to Die and it fast became one of my favourites. The issues that this novel deals with, are things that I have faced in my own life.

I loved the way that it was written. It was very real and the depictions of most of the mental illnesses were confrontingly accurate. The way that Coelho described Mari's panic attacks was almost too accurate for me, it was almost as if I were reading my own experience.

Sure, I think the book ha...more

this is by far my favorite of paulo coelho's books that i've read, but that's still 3 stars. the story is about veronika who attempts suicide and ends up in a mental hospital where she is told she irreparably damaged her heart and has less than a week to live. she then struggles to not find a desire to live now that its too late.

in all honesty, i just don't find coehlo as deep as he gets credit for being. i find him actually a bit egotistical, with his n...more

I actually was glancing through a book shop and when suddenly this book caught my attention. I 've previously read The Alchemist and i thoroughly enjoyed it. But veronica was pretty awesome. In a sense, it was the truth of the western world and will be applicable to the eastern world which is actually involved all the time in copying the west. And from a very depressed state, with no great ambitions or desire in everyday life, veronica decides that life is not worthy of living and after a failed...more

I read this book after finishing the Alchemist. Paulo Coelho, is very good at making you think about your own life. Both this book and Alchemist left me asking questions about myself and my own direction/decisions in life. With that I plan to read many more of his books as I find him to be a very good author.

Veronika decides to die is an ok book. It gave me incite into institutional living and the thinking of what is confining and liberating qualities it has in this particular case an...more

Fantastic read! Awesome! I could not put the book down!

“Veronika Decides to Die” – just read the title again….decides to die…
How many times have you said to yourself, at least I have, “Ahh…I don’t care, I don’t really want to live anymore”, without even thinking about the meaning of it.

So Veronika said the same thing and decided to do something about it. Why?
Nothing bad had happened to Veronika, she was beautiful, had a regular life…very ordinary though ... but ...more

My first experience with Coelho was in reading the novel "The Alchemist." I found that I did not agree with the general consensus that the book was amazing but instead found it to be quite preachy and a little contrived. Granted, I did cut Coehlo some slack as I realized I went into reading the book expecting it's grandiosity to change my life. My friend Cassie was the only person I know who agreed with me on "The Alchemist" and in hearing her recommendation to read "V...more

This is a very different book than previous works by Paulo Coelho that I have read. The story although told through the experiences of a young Slovenian woman named Veronica, is for the most part autobiographical. After a failed suicide, Veronica finds herself in a mental institution. There, she is told that she has a serious heart problem that will cause her to die within a week or two. Despite her previous death wish, Veronica begins to take an advantage of last days of her life and starts exp...more

Day 1 reading (17MarcH)
Veronica tried to kill herself by taking pills. she thought that it was the easiest and feminist way to suicide than other ideas such as throw ur self out of window or cut your vena to stop pulse, but she said they are not good way to die.. HaHa

She was also told she had severe heart problem and her life only 5 days more. so.. this book tells us what's going on w...more

Veronika had everything what young woman wanted from life, but there was something missing and that feeling finally draw her to the suicide. It was at the first sigh illogical thing, but when author leads us deeper it made sense. She however was unsuccessful and her suicide attempt led her to the asylum. Author liked so called exotic places and Ljubljana gave him such setting for the reader of his home land and it made a perfect background for the troubled inmates of the asylum. I am not over exaggerating when I say that Veronika Decides to Die changed my life. And it wasn't even due to the fact that I had been through situations very similar to Veronika, though that in and of itself would make me more empathetic towards her. Rather, it was how she decided to handle herself and her life and how she reacted to everything that happened that really struck a chord in me. Everyone has difficult times in their life and everyone has done something they either deeply reg...more

I bought this book because I'd heard so many positive things about The Alchemist. For some reason, when I hear too much praise for a book, I'll circle it before actually reading it. Maybe pick up one or two of the author's other books first to get a better idea of what I'm getting myself into. It helps me approach the book I really want to read with more realistic expectations, and, I think, reduces my chances of being unfairly disappointed...more

although the title denotes a terribly morbid story, the book is nothing of the sort. the first chapter describes veronika's suicide attempt and her reasons for this decision but the rest of the book is spent describing how and why veronika decides to live. though some might it describe it as eccentric, i consider it to simply be a more honest look at life and mental institutions. most importantly paulo coelho examines what society defines as crazy vs. what crazy really is. he asks the reader: wh...more
