This is a DNF review.

I'm afraid I didn't care for this one nearly as much as the first book I read from this author. There was a sex scene before the first 50 pages were up which felt way too soon and left me completely unmoved because there were no feelings involved at all, least of all love. The characters had already been together previously in the book prior to this one which I'd read, but it didn't help with my connection to the characters at all, unfortunately. It seems odd to me that in most lists for best Highlander Romances, Mary Wine's books don't even appear. Having read all of Garwood's scottish tales, some Moning, and some Brisbin I took all the Mary Wine books off the shelf at my local library and I'm really glad I did.

I've read two so far and they are both slightly different than the other Highlander novels I've read by other authors. For starters in every single other Highlander book I've read, the couple in question is always, always, always...more It seems odd to me that in most lists for best Highlander Romances, Mary Wine's books don't even appear. Having read all of Garwood's scottish tales, some Moning, and some Brisbin I took all the Mary Wine books off the shelf at my local library and I'm really glad I did.

I've read two so far and they are both slightly different than the other Highlander novels I've read by other authors. For starters in every single other Highlander book I've read, the couple in question is always, always, always without a doubt married. Now they may not like each other, they may not want to be married for various reasons, but they always are.

And this book was interesting to me because the couple WASN'T married when they first have sex (which happens off the page a few weeks before the actual book starts). It makes for some interesting politics that you don't often see in romance novels because everyone's so afraid of creating a heroine who doesn't adhere to the morals of the typical Good Christian Woman. She can never have sex outside of marriage. She can never cheat on her partner. She can never consider abortion. But in this book the heroine does all three and it's actually refreshing.

In all the Highlander books I've read, you hear about lemans but you never really see one. Probably because authors are also afraid of making their male love interests irredeemable in the eyes of the audience. So even though having and keeping a mistress on the side was a very common practice in historical Scotland, no authors have the guts to write about it.

Mary Wine does sort of take the easy way out here by making the heroine the leman for a short amount of time. And since it's a romance novel, you know she's eventually going to end up married to the hero because it wouldn't be a romance novel without the standard HEA, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Wine taking on the seedier aspects of Highland life including not being considered worthy of marriage, contemplating abortion to remove the stigma of having a bastard child, facing life as a mistress and not a wife.

The plot itself was interesting with a twist at the end that I kind of wish didn't happen. The book didn't need it and I'm not sure why it was in there. It didn't really make much sense to me, but because the rest of the book was so good, I'll overlook it.

It does lose a star due to being repetitive. There's a lot of craving going on. The heroine's belly twists with desire in literally every scene she's in. Everyone growls and/or snarls. Everyone. To convey every emotion under the sun. Snarling in joy, snarling in anger, snarling in confusion, snarling in humiliation. If you played a drinking game wherein you drank every time someone snarled, you would be dead from alcohol poisoning by the second chapter. But no book is perfect and I'll deal with the snarling just so I don't have to read the requisite 'forced marriage to a barbarian that I don't love but it's my duty to have sex with him' story line that makes up EVERY SINGLE HIGHLANDER BOOK EVER.

So pick up this book for some hot sex scenes, some interesting glimpses into Highland living, and a couple who are attracted to each other but CAN'T get married as opposed to two people who are forced to get married.

Of course, she had already made a choice that kept a feud from erupting but had disgraced her. Norris Sutherland, that Daphne calls a marauder in civilized clothing, had been very happy to help her with that and then gone on his merry way—only now he can’t seem to forget the beautiful, intrepid woman whose passion flamed along with his.

During the fifteenth century, the harsh, unforgiving Highlands produced harsh, unforgiving feuding clans that seemed to believe the end justified the means. Their unwritten code of ethics or the lack thereof is blood-chilling. To find gentleness and love amid all the killing, cruelty and misery is like finding a bit of heaven on earth.

The way Morrell Comyn treats Daphne sends the temper raging. No human being should treat another the way he treats her. She does endure. But this reader zipped along the pages wanting to be sure this despicable character got his comeuppance. Even with the mores of the time less than charitable to women, his barbaric, savage actions horrify.

With a marriage for power and profit prized far above a marriage for love, true love had little hope of prevailing. While Daphne is settled at Dunrobin the Sutherland’s opulent castle, under the protection of Norris Sutherland and in his bed, she knows real fear when Sandra Fraser arrives with her brother Bari along with a big dowry. Sandra plans to marry Norris and even offers Daphne a deal. The conflict and vicious methods that ensue whip the story into frenzy. Sandra’s Machiavellian ways make one shudder.

The Trouble with Highlanders teems with intriguing secondary characters. Lytge Sutherland, Norris’s father is of the old school about marriage, but he has another agenda that adds a special bit of spice. MacNichols, Daphne’s jilted betrothed, and his wife, who is also his true love, play significant roles as the climax nears. Gahan, Norris’s half brother, is a powerful force in the workings of the Sutherlands. He and Saer, Daphne’s half brother, would be interesting characters to get to know more about. Their controlled savage nature seems ready to erupt at any time.

Mary Wine keeps the adrenaline pumping with sizzling love scenes, savage Highlanders who are quick to judge, a demanding, threatening priest, antagonists both male and female that all but breath fire as they pursue their own agendas uncaring of all else. The fast pace keeps the focus on the goal while the woven in history keeps one grounded in the time and place of events. Ms. Wine takes one’s emotions on a rollercoaster ride from the horrific to the heavenly. Her hero and heroine’s happy-ever-after is hard won and precious. It is magical as it should be for she is his fire fairy strong and true. He is her marauder lover—a magnificent Highlander, savage with a thin veneer of civilized but gentle and unabashedly in love with her.

Bookswagger Danielle: Four Crowns, good read, on the way to swagger. What can I say, I loved it and I’m already anticipating the next book. The author did a wonderful job giving the characters depth as well as making them likable. Daphne was a strong heroine she earned my respect when she went to herd the sheep with the men who resented her. Norris was strong and I did like him, I only wished he didn’t embarrass her so many times. His best quality was his loyalty and respect for his father. The chemistry between Norris and Daphne was intense and believable I kept waiting for them to get it together. Often half siblings in historical books are jealous and try to take each other’s place. The relationship between Norris and his brother Gahan was refreshing. I liked that the author showed they had genuine affection for each other and of course I like Gahan’s teasing comments.Are you interested in the next book?

Bookswagger Marcia: Three Crowns, swagger jacked, decent read. I am a huge Mary Wine fan she does Highland romances like no one else. This was not one of my favorites although I did enjoy the read. Daphne was a strong and feminine heroine, she wanted respect, carried herself with pose while also allowing herself to be open to romance. She was not the drag in this story. The male Norris did protest too much. He put her in a situation where her morals were constantly questioned and she was fighting battles within the household that just didn’t fit. I know every romance needs conflict and this one is no exception. I love when the heroine is integrated into a new household and has to prove herself but in this one she did and got knocked down over and over again, I just could not help thinking this would never have happened if the hero had been clearer about who she was but oh well. I definitely plan on reading the next book because I believe it will be about Norris half-brother Gahan he stole the show for me in this story and I want to know more.

Being on the losing side after the Battle of Sauchieburn, MacLeod lands were raided and left nearly barren, leaving Daphne to pick up the pieces and gather her clan in some sort of unity. Oh how I loved this book. When an author and the story can get my emotions flowing, and I go from happy, to sad to angry ( where I wish I was part of the book and want to murder the evil wench), I know it's a winner. Then it has to have a strong female. I am so NOT for a whiny "woes me" chick. Daphne is in no way whiny. She is strong, she is sassy and she interesting. Norris is no slouch either, my ultimate male, tall, devilishly handsome and loyal. Mary Wine is a master or more appropriately the mistress when it comes to story-telling. I had just put down a book I could not get through to save my life, picked up The Trouble with Highlanders, and stayed up all night intrigued with this book. Reading it refreshed my memories of The Highlander's Prize by Mary Wine, where we meet Daphne and Norris. Yes, I loved that book too.

The Trouble with Highlanders is a roller-coaster of romance, suspense and history all wrapped up in a paperback novel for all to enjoy. I highly recommend this, or any read by Mary Wine for that matter. I am so looking forward to the next book in this Highlander saga!

This is my first book by Mary Wine and at the time I began reading it, I did not realize it was the latest in an ongoing series. The event which drives the story - Daphne McLeod willingly giving up her virginity to Norris Sutherland in order to break an unwanted betrothal to another man - actually takes place in the preceding book. This book begins with each of them recalling that night and wondering what it meant to their futures. But it wasn’t clear to me until well into the book how much time had passed since then or whether Daphne’s belief that it had meant nothing to Norris was well-founded.

Daphne is the only legitimate heir of a clan that had once ruled much and had great wealth but is now just barely hanging on. She has made great sacrifices for her clan, not the least of which was deliberately breaking the betrothal which would have destroyed them if it had come to pass. She has continued to wonder if that night meant as much to her as to the man to whom she’d given her greatest gift in order to make it happen. But Norris is her only hope if she is to be saved from the head of another clan who intends to wed, bed and murder her, all for a supposed hidden fortune that may or may not even exist.

Norris is the legitimate heir to the Earl of Sutherland and overlord to all in this part of Scotland, including Daphne and all others who are trying to possess her and destroy her clan. He’s not sure what to make of this woman who only asked for one thing and then walked away, but he knows he’s not done having her with him quite yet. As a titled man responsible for continuing his family line, he can’t pick a penniless ruined woman to be his love... or can he?

Although both Daphne and Norris are compelling and likeable characters, this book was very difficult for me to finish. The pervasive use of dialect made some conversations hard to follow and I found myself rereading some portions multiple times to make sure I knew what it is they were saying. The lengthy descriptions of the intricacies of clan loyalties and Daphne’s struggles to keep her clan fed detracted from what I really cared about - the romance between Daphne and Norris. Her character was almost TSTL (Too Stubborn To Live) but became less infuriating once she finally learned to trust Norris. I did enjoy the portion of the plot when Daphne’s life was endangered by her growing importance to Norris, and its resolution was satisfying. There were also parts which were clearly there to set up the next book in the series, but it’s unlikely I’ll be reading it after my experience with this one.

A SIZZLING Highland Romance!

Oh my this was a delicious story. This was more of a story of sexual conquest and high passions bursting forth than it was of an action packed adventure. Mary Wine sure knows how to push the buttons of her characters that's for sure.

Historical romance is truly alive and well as proven by Mary Wine's latest release THE TROUBLE WITH HIGHLANDERS. It is an absolutely fantastic novel offering a great Scottish romance. This is a continuation of Ms Wine's previous novel, The Highlander's Prize, but I would say it could easily be read as a stand alone. Daphne and Norris have a few scenes in the previous novel, but Ms Wine easily explains their situation and continues their story flawlessly in this novel. While I would strongly recommend reading both of them because they are both great stories, it's not necessary in order to understand THE TROUBLE WITH HIGHLANDERS.

Of course, Mary Wine does a great job of establishing lovable characters and I certainly loved Norris Sutherland! He is the absolute perfect highlander. Fierce and tough when it comes to surviving in the highlands, yet his one weakness is the woman who tests his resolve. He wasn't one to deny his passions and his pursuit of Daphne was fantastically sexy. He knew what he wanted and he went for it. Really, after meeting Daphne, it was easy to see why she was so irresistible to Norris. She was exactly what you expected for a highland lass. She had the same fierce and determined spirit Norris displayed yet a tender side shown only by a woman in love. Ms Wine crafts many scenarios that display Daphne's wonderful strength. In one chapter, she would stand up to the most chilling enemy, but in another she would confess her deepest fears. All in all, she was a great heroine.

If I had to pick one thing out of this novel that I loved best, it would have to be the passion these two characters shared that developed into such a beautiful romance. They could not keep their hands off each other for long but Ms Wine turns that passion into a satisfying and electrifying love story. Daphne and Norris work so well together because it's not just lust they share, but a respect and trust for one another. They make such a powerful couple, you can't help but adore their romance.

This novel moves at a terrific pace. I put it down maybe once or twice, and not necessarily by choice. The couple's romance just consumes the first part of the novel and by the end you are on the edge of your seat as the drama unfolds. Ms Wine certainly drags her characters through a few dangers and trials that add enough drama to have you biting your nails in apprehension. THE TROUBLE WITH HIGHLANDERS has its fair share of angst and uncertainty, but it also has a thrilling amount of passion and romance. It all compiles together to make a fabulous story and the time you spend reading it worth every second.

I highly recommend Ms Wine's latest release. She has established many supporting characters in this fabulous highlander world, which hints she is not done yet with this loosely connected series. I could not be more delighted, because my brief journey has been time well spent and I eagerly await another adventure. If nothing else, THE TROUBLE WITH HIGHLANDERS will remind you why Scottish highlanders are incredibly sexy. And trust me, this particular highlander and his story is worth all the trouble of reading it!

This was a very entertaining read for me that I enjoyed. I'm a big fan of highlander romance so this book definitely satisfied my craving for a good escape into the highlander world. This is the 5th book in the series but I didn't know this until I finished the book and it read great as a stand alone I didn't feel lost at all.

I loved this book!Norris Sutherland is a true highlander,sexy and fierce.Daphne Macleod is the damsel in distress.Norris helps Daphne and she leaves him go.Once again they meet up and Daphne needs his help again.Norris takes Daphne to his family home and feelings begin to grow stronger.This book has other things going on that all fit into the story.Daphne falls victim to a vicious woman and her lies.Norris is determined to wed Daphne,but also must balance duty and honor.Lots of intrigue in this...more

The book is filled with drama and every possible situation to keep Norris and Daphne apart. I found myself angry, frustrated and happy; quite the emotional roller coaster. For me what I don’t know is if reading the earlier books would have made this one better but I’d definitely want to read the others because Daphne and Norris each have half-brothers that I’d love to know more about.

The high drama between Norris and Daphne will take you for a spin on a captivating story of Scottish history full of intrigue and hot scenes. You will feel the trust they share for each other. This by far is my favorite Mary Wine book. She kept it simple the way I like it.

1. Boy meets girl, wants girl, takes girl, keeps girl

2. Has to fight several obstacles to find true love ( In this case his clan doesnt like Daphne, our heroine and someone wants Norris , our hero for herself.)

3. Exciting drama at the end and Happily Ever After
