The Aspen 2-Million Winner-Take-All by John Morris is a book about a man, Morgan who has this lovely neighbor Risa, and she has a dog. Something happens to this dog and Morgan is to blame and no matter what he does or says he can't seem to convince her he had nothing to do with it. But the odds are stacked against him and Risa has decided to sue. The Aspen 2-Million Winner-Take-All by John Morris
Like this book on many counts: the golf, how he just falls into financial gain and his so easy going life style.
Morgan inherits the other half of the apartment complex when the owner dies. He is able to rent it out and a hot chick rents it with her little dog.
The dog gets on his nerves with the constant barking. She is to be a lawyer but he wouldn't be able to prove what she does for work as they don't talk much.

Morgan has three options, 1) find the money to pay off Risa, 2) disappear 3) make Risa fall in love with her. When Morgan hears of a golf tournament with a 2 million dollar prize, he enters it. Will he win? Will he be able to make Risa fall in love with him? Or will he be able to do both?

The characters from John's novel are creative and entertaining. From the first chapter, the characters had me intrigued. I wanted to know more about Morgan and Risa, how the two would interact and see how their relationship (or lack their of) may or may not grow. The best part about this novel was the fact that it was told from a young male's point-of-view. It made the story more entertaining (I was actually laughing out loud a few times...I think I had my coworkers scared that I was laughing at myself, heh) and really showed how vulnerable every character can be. I thoroughly enjoyed waiting for the story to develop and see who would win the tournament.

I liked the overall idea of the plot; however, the novel was a little long. It was comprised of 37 chapters. By the end of the novel, I found myself wanting to skip ahead and ignore small details or small adventures. The sub-plots in the novel were important, however not as intriguing as the main plot. With that said, I still enjoyed reading this novel. John did an incredible job with the characters, main plot and developing the entire situation thoroughly. He wrote this novel with his personal experience in mind, and that made it all the more believable and realistic to imagine. I was truly transported to Aspen during the novel.(less)

Morgan loves living Aspen. He could never dream of living anywhere else.

He inherits a dilapidated duplex when his landlord dies and to be able to stay there and fix it up a little he has to sell half. This brings the lovely Risa into his life, and her little yapping dog too.

This book felt like it was never going to end. I know the story is fiction but it could of been a bit more believable.

I am surprised that the lawsuit went as far as it did. Early on in the book we find out who really killed the dog.

The lawsuit is so far fetched its hard to take it seriously.

Want a book to laugh your way through? This is it! The Aspen 2 Million……is one of the most amusing stories I think I’ve ever read – and that’s saying something. Morgan, God bless Him (and, believe He needs to!) has been accused of several very bad things by his next-door-neighbor, Risa. For Morgan Somerville, Aspen was everything he could imagine and more. He was content with living his life in Chalet Sepp, his now permanent residence, oblivious to the world around him.

When the building's owner dies unexpectedly and leaves him everything he ever owned, Morgan can't count his lucky stars enough. In his mind, he'll be able to make something out of the run-down shack he can now call his own. Fixing up the place as best as he can, he decides to sell off half of it in hopes of making a tidy profit from the sale. Yet never once did he imagine the consequences of his doing so.

Risa Wentworth was beautiful and captured his attention from the moment Morgan set eyes on her. The thought of having her as a neighbor was quite enticing and he couldn't help but wonder what having her as a girlfriend would be like. His dreams, unfortunately, are dashed from the moment Risa's dog dies so unexpectedly.

The kicker of it all - he didn't have a hand in that little fiasco. Risa, on the other hand, refuses to believe him. So much so, that she decides to take him for all he's got. In her eyes, one million dollars will cover the extent of the damages he's inflicted upon her. Unfortunately, that's a tidy sum Morgan doesn't have. Convincing her of this fact, on the other hand, is easier said than done.

When things go from bad to worse, Morgan realizes he'll need to come up with a plausible idea in order to keep Risa at bay. But how? When one of his friends suggests he take part in a winner-takes-all golf tournament, he ponders the possibility of winning such an event. Surely, it can't hurt, right? Coming up with the money is going to take some doing, but Morgan is pretty sure he can do it. Sadly, his plans don't exactly work out the way he wants them to.

This was a very intriguing book. Filled with a slew of characters, once the action starts it keeps on rolling. Granted, there are a good many twists and turns that keep you guessing, but it does provide a little comic relief with every turn of the page. There were a couple spots that had me scratching my head, but all in all, the book is a quick read. The book does need a little bit of editing done for a couple minor punctuation spots I caught, here and there, but it's definitely entertaining, to say the least.(less)

Are you ready for a farcical,light-hearted, unrealistic quasi-romance, kind-of mystery story? I wish to welcome you to a story that will never believe and yet, you might still find it enjoyable. It will be unlike anything you have ever read, I guarantee it.

First things first. There is no descriptive sex (although it is implied), and there is a moderate amount of profanity. I could do with less profanity, I will admit, but neither of these issues spoiled the book for me. As to the story, I am going to be honest. I really did not like the story nor did I connect with it. I wanted to take Risa and ring her little neck. I grew tired of her repeated "needy," it's-all-your-fault attitude. Of any of the characters, I enjoyed Morgan the best, and I have no idea under the sun why he would waste his time on a little ninny like Risa. Whatever struggles he experienced in the story were almost deserved in light of his romantic choices.

Romance? Was there truly any? In between the lawsuits, fights, and many strange twists and turns, I guess there was some time for romance. But for my money, I didn't see much. Risa and Morgan just don't go together. Morgan and Mandie? I really don't know. I think Morgan would have been happier by just renouncing women and going back to filling his life with his motivational speaking commitments.

There are a lot of twists and turns in the book--a wild ride by all counts. I sometimes got lost in the shuffle, and I was not a fan of the conclusion (did it really end?). I found that I had more questions at the end of the book than I generally do at the conclusion of the book.

So why did I give this book a three star rating? I realize I have been rather critical of this book, and I will tell you it will never rank as one of my favorites. However, it was a quick summer read, and it was entertaining for the most part. I would just about lose interest, and then the author would throw something in that I was not expecting. And that would keep me reading.

If you are in the mood for some light reading that is completely out of the ordinary, you might give this book a try. While it was not my cup of tea, I know that there are many kinds of readers out there. This just may be the books for you!

A bit of guilty entertainment. Morgan is living life his way in Aspen, Colorado. Then Risa moves in. Gorgeous Risa, compared in the book to both Charlize Theron and Brooklyn Decker, turns out to be a handful.

When Risa's dog is killed by Morgan's falling marijuana potted plant, yes this is the kid of zaniness you can expect, Risa goes for the jugular and sues. Morgan stands to lose everything.

She’s asking for a million dollars and for the judge to throw him out of town. At this point he has three options. He can try to get her to fall in love with him, discover her deep dark secret or win a 2 million dollar golf tournament and pay her off. He finds himself trying option one while entering option three. Is he good enough to out play 64 desperate golf playing hustlers?

I had a few problems that jolted me away from the story with this book. The author at some points in his dialogue would go into script format so if Pamela was speaking to Debbie, you’d see Pamela: “What?” and then Debbie: “It’s true.” She looked at Morgan. “They got divorced last fall. She didn’t want you to know.” From there it would go into a flowing dialogue and I could get lost in it again. The other major problem I had was that the author constantly reminded the reader that this character looked like this actor or this character looked like this actress. I think that could have been brought across a lot better than what it was. Even if it couldn’t have, I don’t think we needed to be reminded of it throughout the whole book. An example of this can be found when the author is describing Justin:

“Justin was medium height, slim, the same age as Morgan ( say, 40). Looked remarkably like the film actor Hugh Grant: fair-skinned, the same mussed-up brown hair, the same preppie sweater and slacks, the same dopey I-don’t-get-it look on his clean shaven face. He seemed Hugh-Grant harmless, too, but in reality he was a Yale Law School grad who specialized in protecting the rich and the famous, the boorish and the badly-behaved”

A few pages after that it continues.

“Justin turned from the window, hands in his pockets, and gave Morgan his best Hugh-Grant I-can’t-believe-I-have-to-tell-you-this frown.”

That said, this book was a riot. It’s filled with quirky characters and for Morgan it’s just one calamity after another. I do find it a bit of a stretch that Morgan allowed himself to be treated the way he was by Risa. Most men would not have put up with that and realistically would have left long before that. I couldn’t find myself believing that a strong willed almost bratish woman like Risa would allow herself to be bullied into continuing the lawsuit or that she was afraid of her lawyers but once I just accepted that for what it was, it really was an enjoyable read. Pick it up if you want a few laughs.

Did I enjoy this book: I did not enjoy this book which is unfortunate because the premise seemed promising. Then, I started reading it and ... UGH. The whole book was just too unbelievable and ridiculous.

The main plot is totally unbelievable once you get into the story. There is no way this lawsuit would get that far for many, many reasons. Also, Morgan's lawyer should not be practicing law...at the very least, he should have referred him to a more qualified attorney. Furthermore, Risa's attorn...more
