Oh my word. That ending just about broke me.
My heart is aching for these two, poor men. It's just bleeding pain from all the cracks caused by their agonizing stupidity and their fierce love. Oh, man, it hurts to have it end there. Like that. In that horribly tragic way. So devastating.
UGH! No no no. I do not accept this ending. It had BETTER get fixed in the next book or I'm gonna be one severely pissed off momma bear!

This is a love story between a slave and his master set in a fantasy world. Beautifully written, leaves you on a cliff-hanger, there is a sequel.

'Rising from his seat, Kale prepared himself to turn away from Jason forever. As much as he wanted to stay, he couldn't. It simply hurt too much. He'd be damned if he was going to cry and run the risk of waking Jason.'

Though the theme of the story was intriguing, I felt Jason's transition from a bully to a man with ideals was poorly supported. I really liked how he was made to be obsessive with regards to his love interests and how he threw himself into the act of love without regard to safety or social position, but I don't feel this aspect of him meshed well with the man who perpetrated physical and mental abuse at the beginning of the novel. There was no hint of higher awareness to suggest Jason could be a...more

I'm having a hard time with this story....so that must mean the writer has done his/her job, right? I didnt like Jason very much at first, but I see now how young and spoiled he was in the beggining of the story plot and how having a slave like Kale helped him grow as a man and helps him to become the person that he is. Kale in turn finds his self contained world shaken to the core...all Kale knows is the world of servitude and keeping a low profile. Its a shaky beggining for these two, they com...more

So I started reading this book chapter by chapter and I didn't realize how much I would like it until I could get the book for free on Amazon. I read the last half of the book in one go and I am really glad I did!

It starts off as a bit of an unlikely romance. Jason seems to be a spoiled romantic brat who is just superficial even though he thinks he is not. Kale seems to embody the character of a slave or...like a "guy's guy" in that he just does what is necessary to survive. Eat. Sleep. Work. Ha...more

I'm not completly sure how to rate this one. On one hand it is a nicely written romance, but on the other there is the end. Yes, I know, there is a warning in the blurb that this is a bittersweet romance... but... somehow, with the writing and the emotions and all the elements of a proper romance (reminded me in a good way a lot of a regency romance) I thought that this had to be a mistake. Well, except, there was this end. Hm. That left me a little in the rain because I co...more

3.5 I liked this book, but I didn't know going in that it was part of a series so the cliffhanger ending had me feeling a little jolted. My fault for not researching. I'm not sure if I'll look for the next book or not. The writing was good, the characters appealing, but I was left with a lot of questions about the world building.

We're told very briefly that a country was invaded and the people became slaves as part of the peace treaty (something along those lines anyway). There's no visible phys...more

I usually don’t go for historical nor fantasy fiction; however, my kinky alter ego is a sucker for Master/slave stories. It was free on Amazon (I think it is still is) so I decided to give it a shot. I am glad that I did.

This story was not your usual eroticized Master/slave story. This is not a BDSM book. Kale is not a ‘pleasure’ slave; he is a slave in the traditional awful sense of the word. His master is a total bastard to him for the first part of the book but he comes around later on.

The first thing that you need to know about this book is that there IS a sequel. I didn't know this and spewed some choice expletives when I got to the end. Finally, I calmed down long enough to see "Want to read more about..." and was able to breathe again. They really need to make the font on that announcment bigger.I can't even imagine finishing this book, with this ending, and having to wait for Book 2. It would NOT have been pretty.

Ok, so onto the story. Hmm, I did really enjoy it for the...more

Measure of Devotion takes an unusual approach to the subject of slavery. Posit for a moment that the ancient slavery traditions of Rome had carried forward into the present day and that there was still a second lower class of human being that was destined to spend entire lifetimes as the property of someone else. This book makes that assumption and then examines the ramifications of that in a fictional story about one young man and the slave that he is given. Yes, this book has its elements of m...more

i don't usually actively seek out slave fiction and probably wouldn't have gotten this one except for the fact that it's currently offered for free at Amazon. At least it would appear to be free except this little tale ends with a cliffhanger. Meaning if I'm to get any satisfaction out of this I have to purchase the sequel--and that better have an ending to it.

I wouldn't say this book has the best world building. It's some vague old fashioned time period and people are slaves based on some once...more

The story is from pov of a young man born into slavery with the belief that all things are as they are, as they should be and as they always be. A man peculiarly accepting of a life of hard labor, overt maltreatment and lack of a vision of the future any different from the present.
When given as a gift to a drunken childish adult, despite worsening conditions for the young man, pity and concern flows in the wrong (to me) direction.
The characters are very well written on the surface, but found I h...more

I really enjoyed this book.

I thought the first half of the book was stronger than the second half, and I liked the fact that the slaves in the book weren't always working and developed relationships among themselves. I think some of my favorite parts of the book were when Kale and the other slaves would play cards and Kale would work out ways to keep his young owner occupied and later help him find social acceptance.

I also liked the fact that Kale spent a lot of time manipulating Jason. I think...more

The tears are still wet on my cheeks. What a moving story. Kale gave up everything for his master, even his own future with him. I feel so badly that Jason's guilt over his early treatment of Kale allowed him to believe the things Kale said.

I'm totally not a fan of cliffhanger endings, but I got this book free from Amazon as a suggestion for the BOM of the M/M Romance Group and this was a GREAT recommendation.

The love that eventually grew between these two men, one owner and one slave, was beau...more

This book brought all the feels!! But let me start by saying that I usually shy away from slave stories because of the whole dubious consent situation. I am SO GLAD I gave this book a chance though, what a great story.

There are so many things to love about Kale in this book. His inner strength, his loving heart, his wit, his art, I could go on and on. Undoubtedly, Kale steals the show in this book. But lets not leave Jason behind, sure Jason is young and makes many mistakes due to his inexperien...more

I was not sure what to expect from this book. I found it free on Amazon and made the choice to not read any thing more than the description when I started the book.

I found the beginning disturbing. The relationship of Master/slave and the way the character Kale was treated by Jason really bothered me but it set the tone for how the story progressed.

I enjoyed the story, it had a historical romance feel to it. I kept hoping for a happy ending but it is actually a cliffhanger which I was not p...more

This was a freebie on Amazon for the Kindle when I got it, and I really enjoyed it. I have to say I really disliked Jason in the beginning, and I wasn't completely convinced at the sudden volte-face from abusive master to lover. Kale's insights into Jason's psyche were a major factor in finally winning me over - seeing him as a spoilt, dramatic, lost boy struggling to learn how to behave and willing to see the fault in himself to grow.

Before I knew it I was completely sucked in, and at the mercy...more

When I purchased this book I was not sure I could get into a fictional society. I was WRONG! The story pulled me in and never let go until I finished it. The characters were well thought out and very sympathetic. Even most of the secondary characters were well thought out. When I finished this story I immediately purchased the sequel. My poor partner was left to his own devices for an evening.

I love reading romance novels as well as writing them and I needed to let everyone know how much I appre...more

Kale and Jason

Jason is a spoiled boy entering the stage of adulthood. He has always gotten what he wanted, except for the slave named Kale. I must say I really disliked Jason in the first half of this book, but he showed some real character development once he realized he is not as important as he thinks. This occurred through a sham of a relationship, and who is left to pick up the pieces non other than the slave he didn't want.

Kale is quite and strong willed. Kale also shows a intelligence tha...more

I loved this story, the start kind of turned me off but once Jason got it together it was great. This was truly a beautiful romance story and had me crying many times but the ending was so completely devastating I cried so hard then my Kindle refused to connect to my wifi and I couldn't get the second book loaded into my Kindle. I figured out how to connect the Kindle to the computer and loaded it in my Kindle and didn't stop reading until I finished it. Wonderful story, this book was free and t...more

This book was one that made me love and hate it. The characters were easy to understand and although sometimes frustrating I just couldn't put the book down.

Kale the main character made me laugh and cry. I could understand his devotion, but was sad to see the lengths he went to for the person he loved.

Jason was a complete jerk for most of the beginning of the book yet once he open his heart to what was so obvious you couldn't help but feel for how gullible the seemed to be.

This is a damn good book. It's incredibly evocative and visceral. So much so, in fact, that I'm actually feeling a little numb right .

I had this near-permanent smile on my face throughout the first half. Yeah, I wanted to strangle Jason a lot of time, but their interactions and such were just so adorable.

And then towards the end. Oh, damn does the plot thicken. Visceral, raw, evocative, emotional. Man, talk about getting sucked into a book.

I normally only rated the books, seldom write reviews as words do not come easy to me. But this story really touches me. The story first introduce us to the two main characters Kale and Jason and slowly brings us along their journey of discovery and growth. I think that without the journey, the ending will not be as touching and heart rending as it is. Tears just falls out of my eyes as I read the last chapter of the book. I cannot wait to read the next one to find out how it goes for Kale and J...more

I really enjoyed this book. In some ways I felt that I could really relate to both main characters. It took a little getting into at the very beginning. I felt that it was dragging on, but once Jason and Kale got into their relationship, I couldn't put the book down. I made the mistake of finishing the book on my dinner break at work, so for the rest of my shift I was sad and upset that it ended the way it did. I already bought book 2

OMG!!!!! So could not put this book down!!! finished the same day I started! It was hard not to cry at the end and it was frustrating with the amount of love and sacrifice that these two men went through!! Come on Renee!!!!! For goodness SAKES Say something!!! Why????? At the end of the book I just kept telling my self Nooooooo...it can NOT end this way!!! So I started the next book (love that it was already out and could start to read it in seconds!)
