Most people enter the world of Paulo Coelho with Alchemist. I started with "Veronika decides to die" and then moved on to "By the river Piedra I sat down and wept".
I am just starting to read the Alchemist.

I really, really, loved the Veronika - it was an easy read with the very deep meaning that I could very much relate to.

I started reading By the River having the same expectations...and was a little bit disappointed, and this is why I gave this book 4 starts and not...more

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite writers, and this is the book where he hooked me for good.

The book tells the story of the cynical, urban working girl Pilar, who runs into her childhood best friend after many years and discovers a couple of pretty astonishing things, all right in a row: A) that he's been in love with her all his life, B) that he's entered the seminary, C) that he belongs to a strange spiritual cult dedicated to worshiping the feminine face of God, and D) that he can perfor...more

By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept was weaved together with passages of wisdom and insight, which is the foremost attribute I seek when reading one of Coelho's novels. I was consumed by the book and finished its 180 pages in less than 24 hours -- in 2 good sittings. I am inspired by the motivating idea the book sets forth to abandon my fears and the security of my life in pursuit of my dreams. I am filled with hope at the proposition that a few people an affect change in the whole un...more

As I was packing for my Spain trip, I realized I needed some reading material. About a year ago, I randomly picked up some Paulo Coelho novels at Borders and never read any of them. For the trip, I chose By the River Piedra, I Saw Down and Wept, which is ironic for many reasons. Mainly though, because the novel takes place in Spain, which is the country that I was traveling to.

Like all Coelho novels, his writing style is very much that of a parable, or a story to teach a lesson. Apparently, ...more

By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept" tells of Pilar, a frustrated scholar looking for some greater meaning in the endless cycle of her days. When a childhood friend contacts her, she is surprised to learn that her former playmate is now a charismatic spiritual leader, someone revered as a miracle worker. She is even more astonished when he reveals that Pilar has always been his great love. Confused by this sudden opportunity for a new chance at life, Pilar gradually comes to realize tha...more

all i can say is.. i can totally relate to the book when i read it.. :p
the book tells a story about a young girl whose old flame was rekindled when she met her long lost friend. unfortunately, the friend is a would-be priest. it's funny when sometimes people do illogical things when it comes to love. she knew the consequences of falling in love with the man, of how her heart would be broken, and yet she was unable to stop herself, and continued to love him anyway.

Here are some of my favour...more

I read about a quarter of the book, but it is basically referencing ideas of an Earth Mother, Goddess, Virgin Mother rubbish that made it impossible for me to swallow any of the rest of what I gather is a love story.

I remember enjoying The Alchemist by the same author, read years ago, but this novel with it's ideas of the feminine face of God and its shmatltzy Hallmark sayings of love and discovery were cheap. What annoyed me, and should have clued me in, was the authors note at the start o...more

A story about love and faith. When combined, they conquer all. It also goes into the feminine side of religions that are not often talked about, and how the symbol for the feminine body in faith is water. Interesting views.

"True love is an act of total surrender."

Gw kebetulan baca novel ini yang terjemahan bahasa indonesianya (secara kalo baca englishnya bisa 10 tahun!)

Novel ini merupakan bagian awal dari trilogi-nya Paulo yaitu:
- By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept
- Veronika Decides to Die
- The Fifth Mountain

Novel ini terbit tahun 1992, jauh sebelum The Da Vinci Code beredar. Tapi buku ini mempunyai kesamaan inti cerita, yaitu tentang Tuhan. Dalam buku ini dibahas tentang sisi feminin Tuhan yang kita kenal selama ini dari sisi maskulin...more

I absolutely love The Alchemist, so I was really eager to read more of Coehlo's works.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this book. Unlike The Alchemist, I never understood what I was supposed to be learning from the story. The sub-title on the cover calls it "a novel of forgiveness"; I kept waiting for something in the book to clarify/justify this, but I ended the book not...more

I still don't know exactly how I feel about this book. I enjoy Paulo Coelho because he seems to articulate faith and spirituality in ways that are universal to all people. The feminine face of God is often neglected and even scorned by traditional religious sects, and I enjoyed that aspect of the book. It speaks eloquently about the different kinds of love, though I question the relationship between Pilar and her childhood friend and the gift he was given. The sacrifice seems too big. I thi...more

Weepy, yes. Kinda made my heart throb. Ache, rather. I had this book photocopied and bound so I could share with someone. I must have wanted so badly to rub away the hurt and the coldness that swept through me while I was reading this sappy Coelho book-- I spilled Efficascent Oil all over the bound pages. Seven years later, I bought a new copy. Took me that long to forgive.

I have yet to reread the book, but I expect that like before, it will be another emotional journey. For those of you wh...more

lumayan kaget melihat review yang bagus di good reads tentang buku ini.Saya beli buku ini karena it's one of coelho's and it was supposed to be good. tapi entah kenapa, i've never finish reading this book.

I don't recall the characters and the story exactly (my memory is jogged by other goodreads' members' reviews, though).

What I most remember about this book is that it celebrates the feminine principle of God. For about a week after I finished the book, my prayers were often automagically addressed to God as the Divine Feminine. Which to one reared as a Lutheran was both curious and confusing.

quote

"You have to take risks, he said. @e will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen. Every day, God gives us the sun--and also one moment in which we have the ability to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day, we try to pretend that we haven't perceived that moment, that it doesn't exist--that today is the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if people really pay attention to their everyday lives, they will discover that magic moment. It may arrive in the instant when we are doing something mundane, like putting our front-door key in the lock; it may lie hidden in the quiet that follows the lunch hour or in the thousand and one things that all seem the same to us. But that moment exists--a moment when all the power of the stars becomes a part of us and enables us to perform miracles." more quotes »
