I have just experienced a wonderful and enlightening love story that has moved me deeply. Indeed, Paulo Coelho's "By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept" is a must read for people who have lost, found, or still seeking for love.
I have made some references to this novel in some of my past blogs. But now, I am writing more about it on my personal realizations after experiencing this enigmatic literary work.

Okay first off I really enjoy what I have read of Paulo Coelho and this book doesn't change that. It is, supposedly, the first book in a trilogy that consists of 1)The River Piedra 2) Veronika Decides to Die and 3) The Devil and Miss Prymm. I read Miss Prymm first not knowing that it was part of a series. I mean any of these books can be read alone with no problems of continuity, plot or characters it's just that after I found out it was the 3 books loosely grouped together the OCD and biblio...more

Most people enter the world of Paulo Coelho with Alchemist. I started with "Veronika decides to die" and then moved on to "By the river Piedra I sat down and wept".
I am just starting to read the Alchemist.
I really, really, loved the Veronika - it was an easy read with the very deep meaning that I could very much relate to.
I started reading By the River having the same expectations...and was a little bit disappointed, and this is why I gave this book 4 starts and not...more

When the love to The Creator means love to His creations, it is the time that love is freeing. A childhood closeness that turns into deep, emotional feeling towards one another and how it rejuvenated years after are beautifully presented in the story. And how bitter the separation brings a new understanding how paradox love is.
The longing of youth relationship grew as the time passed by, and seventeen years later they were reunited only to find out that the boy had transformed into a charmin...more

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite writers, and this is the book where he hooked me for good.
The book tells the story of the cynical, urban working girl Pilar, who runs into her childhood best friend after many years and discovers a couple of pretty astonishing things, all right in a row: A) that he's been in love with her all his life, B) that he's entered the seminary, C) that he belongs to a strange spiritual cult dedicated to worshiping the feminine face of God, and D) that he can perfor...more

Tap...more

Again I read this Coelho book in 2 days. The story moved quickly, and it's not a long book.
I really enjoyed the love story in this, but the religious aspect kind of clouded my enjoyment. I am respectful of other religions, but I don't usually choose to read about them in great depth. Usually Coelho skirts his Catholicism better than he does in this book.
But I do understand that to an extent, the religiousness was a key aspect of this novel, and it did make for some good analogies and all...more

ryan,
By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept was weaved together with passages of wisdom and insight, which is the foremost attribute I seek when reading one of Coelho's novels. I was consumed by the book and finished its 180 pages in less than 24 hours -- in 2 good sittings. I am inspired by the motivating idea the book sets forth to abandon my fears and the security of my life in pursuit of my dreams. I am filled with hope at the proposition that a few people an affect change in the whole un...more

The heroine is Pilar, 28, who is resigned that her life will not have anything extrodinary in it - it will be working, coming home to a marriage of companionship more then love and just doing what society expects of her. Her former boyfriend contacts her and together on a short journey they experience a spiritual path through admiting their love of each other and letting go of fears. I was caught up in the characters and their journey and carried through the great Pyrenees. The book remin...more

As I was packing for my Spain trip, I realized I needed some reading material. About a year ago, I randomly picked up some Paulo Coelho novels at Borders and never read any of them. For the trip, I chose By the River Piedra, I Saw Down and Wept, which is ironic for many reasons. Mainly though, because the novel takes place in Spain, which is the country that I was traveling to.

all i can say is.. i can totally relate to the book when i read it.. :p
the book tells a story about a young girl whose old flame was rekindled when she met her long lost friend. unfortunately, the friend is a would-be priest. it's funny when sometimes people do illogical things when it comes to love. she knew the consequences of falling in love with the man, of how her heart would be broken, and yet she was unable to stop herself, and continued to love him anyway.

I read about a quarter of the book, but it is basically referencing ideas of an Earth Mother, Goddess, Virgin Mother rubbish that made it impossible for me to swallow any of the rest of what I gather is a love story.
I remember enjoying The Alchemist by the same author, read years ago, but this novel with it's ideas of the feminine face of God and its shmatltzy Hallmark sayings of love and discovery were cheap. What annoyed me, and should have clued me in, was the authors note at the start o...more

A story about love and faith. When combined, they conquer all. It also goes into the feminine side of religions that are not often talked about, and how the symbol for the feminine body in faith is water. Interesting views.

"The more we love, the closer we come to spiritual experience."

I absolutely love The Alchemist, so I was really eager to read more of Coehlo's works.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this book. Unlike The Alchemist, I never understood what I was supposed to be learning from the story. The sub-title on the cover calls it "a novel of forgiveness"; I kept waiting for something in the book to clarify/justify this, but I ended the ...more
