I got this book for my birthday - because a born Berlinian in exile people thought it funny - and it is. In short observational texts (with added special tips at the end of each) Kaminer examines myths, events, special things in Berlin. It's an enjoyable read and in the beginning a real chance for a Berlinian to recognise himself. And that's really funny.
Towards the end, Kaminer tends to explain everything by stories about his Russian background and how he came to Berlin. While still quite inter...more

as a Berlinerin i say this book is really good in describing Berlin to the non-Berliner !
Berlin through the eyes of Kaminer. Very refreshing, I was laughing out loud reading it.

After Schönhauser Allee the next best read... somehow I didn't find it as entertaining. On the other hand it is quite informative in its own way. I got to know Berlin like I never thought I would. Now I can't wait to visit that city again. My recommendation: read this book along with a Berlin map, and mark down all the points of interest. Then go ahead and hit the city like never before!
After living in Berlin, this book was a great read as a guidebook to the city. If you read German and want a very different side of Berlin, then you should read this! The author writes in a very witty, accessible style and if you've lived in Berlin, you'll understand a lot of the jokes he makes.
Kaminer, who's worth googling, plans to run for mayor of Berlin in 2011. Judging from his platform, which he outlines in the final vignette from this book, the whole thing's a joke. This collection, though not without its charms, is indulgently casual and lazily cynical.

Short, comic vignettes about Berlin. A pleasant read. Nothing deep. Not too difficult for language-learners. Like me.
Not my favorite of his. A bit schwach at times.
