After being underwhelmed by "Hide and Seek" I was hoping for something more substantial by Horror maestro Jack Ketchum, and this piece of work was far more engaging and effective. I don't think CFS/CPS would approve but this shit does happen and it really pisses me off so much. Phoenix Sinclair anyone? This book clearly illustrates that more often than not, the "justice system" is a pathetic joke and the social workers, lawyers, and judges should really pull their heads out of their asses regard...more
Only Child is more of a psychological thriller than a full-bore gore fest like Off Season - a puke inducing book like no other I have ever read. That Jack Ketchum was able to conceive of the scenes and images that comprised the latter novel and still roams the streets a free man is vaguely disturbing.
By comparison, Only Child is a fairly tepid experience. After a slow start, however, it generates significant tension and is quite an excellent novel in its own right. You'll just want to vomit far...more

Oy vey! This was a tough one ... boy, Jack Ketchum is definitely not for the faint of heart. He pulls no punches ever and this one is no exception. Just like his other infamous, traumatizing novel --
The Girl Next Door
-- Only Child (previously published as Stranglehold) is inspired by true events -- and what a horrible and depressing story! Give me supernatural horror any day because at least then I don't have to brood about the real consequences for the real people involved. This one does not...more

This may be the best Jack Ketchum book I've read yet. Although other reviews suggest that this book is over the top, he treats the subject of child sexual abuse with considerable sensitivity and honesty. Also, as a lawyer I can say the courtroom scenes are the most accurate representations of trial and the family court system that I've read. He deserves some real praise for the quality of his research. I wish more people could have the stomach to read this one to see how our system utterly fails...more
Had no idea what this book was about before I started reading it and it's absolutely not the sort of thing I would normally read.
Bleak, grim, unsettling and deeply unpleasant I read it all in one sitting just so I could put the damn thing away and never think of it again. Deals with some pretty horrendous subject matter and definitely not one for the faint of heart or easily upset.
Stephen King recommended author. He says: "Who's the scariest guy in America? Probably Jack Ketchum."
and
"He is, quite simply, one of the best in the business, on par with Clive Barker, James Ellroy, and Thomas Harris."
and
“Ketchum has become a kind of hero to those of us who write tales of horror and suspense. He is, quite simply, one of the best in the business.”

Jack Ketchum is the pseudonym for a former actor, singer, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk -- a former flower child and baby boomer who figures that in 1956 Elvis, dinosaurs and horror probably saved his life. His first novel, Off Season, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He personally disagrees but is per...more
