Undead and Unpopular (Undead Series #5)
by
MaryJanice Davidson (Goodreads Author)
Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor already has plenty on her plate. For one thing, next week is her birthday - the big 3-1 in human years, and one in undead years. (Yes, she bit the dust on her birthday last year.) On top of that, she still has wedding plans to finalize - and it's not helping that the prospective groom is avoiding anything to do with it. And then there's her decis...more

“This place drives me nuts sometimes: nutty vampires, a bitchy werewolf, a zombie, a grumpy billionaire, and a vampire on a hunger strike.”
Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Well, sadly, the book isn’t that thunderous and comical as you may think from the quote above.
Yes, all of the aforementioned creatures are in the story, and more. Let’s see what we have:
The zombie. Totally pointless. As if he just accidentally took the wrong attic.

Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor is back with a bang and on the verge of a ginormous breakdown!!! Her fast-approaching thirty-first birthday and her impending nuptials have got her knickers in a twist!...add to that a few other pesky details: best friend Jessica seems more cranky than usual, one of her loyal subjects seeks permission to “turn” her mortal lover over to the dark side, a delegation of smarmy European vampires have finally come to pay their respects to the new monarchs AND there’s a rotti...more
I think this is my favorite Queen Betsy book so far. The mysterious European vampires – are they friend or foe? What’s wrong with Jessica? Is there really a Zombie in the attic? And if so, what’s he doing there? Along with appearances from some of our favorite guest stars, Sophie and Liam and Garrett and Antonia (the werewolf, not the stepmom…although, the stepmom makes an appearance as well). Betsy herself actually seemed a little bit brighter, as well, which is nice, because the one thing I la...more

This book seemed really rushed to me, which was disappointing since it was my first time picking up the Undead series again after several years and I was hoping for more. It entertained me for the one or two hours it took me to breeze through it, but I felt like a lot of the plot threads didn't really go anywhere and that Betsy never actually did very much. We barely get to know the European vampires the cover flap blurb promised at all, and the other major element (view spoiler)...more

Only a couple pages in but the characters are describing advancements that leave my mind boggled. Apparently, there's a small novella in between Undead and Unreturnable and this book that Goodreads doesn't have listed in the series. Off to look for it.
Here it is: Dead and Loving It
Synopsis:
"A Fiend in Need" reveals the true identity of George the Fiend when Antonia, the seer of the Wyndham werewolves, knocks on Betsy Taylor's door after receiving a vision that she is supposed to travel to Minn...more

Maybe it's because I'm not ready yet to read another Betsy story.
Maybe it's because there is not enough Betsy-Sinclair romance in this book.
Maybe it's because there are too many characters dropping in and out of chapters even Betsy herself is confused.
Maybe it's because Betsy can't stop whining throughout the book without solving anything until the end.
Hell, maybe it's because the book is too thin (more value for money, please!). I don't know.

Any time I need a good dose of humor mixed with some paranormal lore and fun romance/sex I read a Queen Betsy book and get my fill. She never fails to make me laugh and Sebastion never fails to make me sigh. Damn he is a sexy brooding vamp. Yum. He's aggresive and knows what he wants with just the right amount of gentleman wrapped in. Yum again.
I love these books. They can get a little silly sometimes and at least once or twice during a book I want to yell at Betsy to shut her trap, but nobody...more

This book was much better than the previous book in the series. I read it in one sitting and didn't want to put it down until I was done.
My only complaint was the surprise in the attic. Betsy makes a big deal of how she should have listened to the warnings about it and when she finally had to deal with her "surprise" it only lasted a few pages and had no real impact on the book. I did wonder if the "surprise" would turn out to be Betsy's father since he hasn't been seen for a while, but that wa...more

I enjoyed Undead and Unpopular as I have the previous Queen Betsy books, even though Betsy was a bit more childish than usual because of the mounting problems in her life. Or is that unlife? (And I loved Eric's "Darling, you are my soul and my life, but this is not even remotely about you.") I know some readers found Betsy's behavior intolerable, but I've just accepted that her self-centered overreactions are how she shows she cares—in the same way that my grandmother expresses love by nagging a...more

So, George is really Garrett. He can speak and his a girlfriend who was introduced in an anthology for a completely different series. I was so confused when I started reading because it felt like being dropped in the middle of something. Especially with Jessica's bitchy attitude that seemed to come from nowhere.
Plus, there's Betsy herself who just seems so selfish sometimes. I dunno how they all put up with her sometimes. I think everyone should have got on her for that stupidity in telling Jon...more

Betsy Taylor has had quite a year. After a disastrous thirtieth birthday which entailed in her being laid off from her job, getting ran over by a Pontiac Aztec, dying and then waking up to find out that she's now a Vampire; she's ready to start her new year off on a good note. What better way to do that then plan her own thirty-first birthday surprise party. Of course, it's not like she's wanting a party but if her family and friends insist on throwing one then they better know all of personal p...more

As with all books in this series the tongue remains firmly in check. This particular installment was desperately light in plot with a few lose ends left waving. It was more "aday in the life." I am willing to forgive the all over the place plot though because it is a series and this could simply be a book setting up a larger plot down the road.
As usual quite a fun slice of vampire-lite fluff that kept me entertained in the car. Again it was quite a slender story but then most of them are.
However, when first listening I felt very confused and wondered whether I had skipped a book as there were new characters that had obviously been previously introduced.
When I got home and accessed the internet I discovered that two characters, Sophie and Liam, had appeared in a short story 'Biting in Plain Sight' and that there also was a novella, A...more
I absolutely hate the main character. She's completely stupid, high maintenance, overly dramatic, and swears so frequently it seems like she's spent time in prison or the military. No redeemable characteristics. Now, this has been pretty consistent through the, what five?, books of this series I've read, and with some YA books I kept at it hoping the main character would dig their head out of their butt and manage to grow a brain. But it hasn't happened with this series yet. And for some reason,...more

What I enjoy about Mary Janice Davidson's writing is her ability to maintain a light-hearted and witty outlook on life, even as an undead character. I flew through this series and have enjoyed every addition so far. In my humble opinion, I think she does a great character development. I began reading several series this summer and gave up on a few eventually when the characters remained supposed strong women but ended up complete ninnies even as time passed. In this series, Betsy is a complete n...more
Still love me some Betsy Taylor. I finished this book in a big hurry. Gobbled it up you could say. I did feel like this book was a bit of a montage of the previous books however. You know, like when you're watching a tv series and the writers have run out of things to say, so they make a "remember when this happened!?" Episode. It was all good though. I did appreciate the refreshers.

At first this book confused me as I thought I'd missed something in book before as there seemed to be another Antonia who was going out with Garrett yet who just suddenly appeared. It seems I wasn't aware (neither where others it seems) that there is a short novella between Undead and Unreturnable and this book. This book seemed completely rushed and I didn't really see the whole point of the European vampires, they didn't really offer much in ways of a story, apart from they where meant to be t...more
Queen Betsy is having a birthday, but of course first she has to deal with vampire business. Being Queen, she has a lot on her plate, the whole blood fasting she is doing for her birthday, the visitors from Europe, the ghost claiming there’s a zombie in the attic, and something is up with Jess too. All while planning her wedding.

Murder, mayhem and zombie. This is another great volume but Davidson. Betsy has a lot going on but it isn't like she trying to save the world. She's got an ancient vamp who is responsible for the turning (murder) of a slightly less old vamp who wants revenge or for Betsy to do something, wedding plans, bad news about a friend, and her fast. Things are piling up on Betsy and to top it off she gets stuck in the attic with a zombie.

My English review

This book was an easy read. It's comical and pretty light without being fluffy. What kept me invested wasn't the plot, although it wasn't bad, but the characters. Betsy is the vampire queen, who has a potty mouth and sounds like a teenager, but her edginess is actually kind of refreshing. Her fiance Sinclair is the vampire king, and he is endearing if a little high-handed at times. Add to this a cranky step-mother, a baby brother, a few well-intentioned human roomates, and some murderous vamps a...more
This is the 5th book in the Undead series about the vampire queen Betsy Taylor and her vampire followers and her human friends.
This one is not as good as the previous books, there was not that much of story to it. It is more just day to day life which in itself is okay. I would like to see more interaction between her and her king Eric Sinclair. She is still planning her wedding that Eric seems to be reluctant about and she is getting ready to celebrate her 30th birthday. I have to admit that so...more
