The Negotiator, by Dee Henderson is a book telling about the difficulty in some of the jobs that certain Americans do in order to make our country a safer and better place. Kate O’Malley is a hostage negotiator in Chicago, Illinois. Being a hostage negotiator is a very stressful job for someone, like Kate, to take on. This book is written to show about the burdensome jobs that certain people take on, in order for other people to be safe and not have to worry. There are certain jobs in this coun...more
Life Between Coffee Spoons
In a sea of Christian fiction that gives writing and religion a bad name, Dee Henderson hits the nail on the head repeatedly throughout the O'Malley series. Kate probably remains my favorite, especially since Dave is equally charming in his carry-over from Danger in the Shadows.

Kate is a strong female character works as a negotiator (couldn't see that one coming, could you?). But when someone begins targeting her specifically, she has to work against the clock to save as many lives as possible....more

I did not realize that this was an inspirational romance when I began reading it. Even before we got to the proselytizing the characters were just a bit too perfect; all of them very successful at what they did. Then comes the fact that the hero would not even consider dating the heroine (Kate) because she was not a Christian. This was the first turn off. When her sister was diagnosed with cancer and told Kate she was afraid for her soul, I just wanted to puke. Do evangelical Christians not real...more

I do not normally read romantic suspense but this one intrigued me. And I got it when it was offered for free. So what did I have to lose? After all, I love romance. So I thought I would give Dee Henderson’s book, The Negotiator, a try.

I am so glad I did.

FBI agent Dave Richman finds true love while being a secret hostage in a tense situation in a bank. Talk about a bad birthday. David watches Kate O'Malley exercise her talent as a negotiator and save the lives of all the hostages as well as hi...more

I loved this book! I might be a little generous with 4 stars on occasion, but I'm reserving 5 stars for a book I'd pay to be able to keep reading. Fortunately, there are 7 O'Malley siblings and I started on the first one. Each book features one of the siblings, starting with Kate, a top-notch police negotiator in hostage situations. I had a slow start with it, and set it down a couple of times before deciding to push my way through a little farther. The characters developed into really interesti...more

I actually really liked the plot of this novel, even though I'm not a mystery fan and the basic plot is that of a mystery. I thought Henderson did a good job weaving in enough suspense about Kate's background and the other elements to keep the plot snappy and quick moving...until about 2/3 of the way through when it felt like everything got tangled up in details and I started having trouble following the case and who was doing what at what time. And then there's the moment when Kate makes a big...more

From its very begining Kate O'Malley did not need to negotiate to keep my interest. As the main character she is a complex, exciting character. She has her head on her shoulders and can think calmly in the most stressful of situations, that's what makes her so good at her job...negotiating, keeping people safe. But she has a past. She comes from an abusive family and at a young age she was placed in an orphanage at Trevor House. This is where the O'Malleys meet and decide to make their own famil...more

I loved this first book in a series, introducing us to one of the 7 members of the O'Malley "family", Kate; a Chicago police hostage negotiator.

The book had great pacing. I thoroughly enjoyed the "Die Hard" action / suspense parts of this book. And let it be noted, the author did her research. Henderson masterfully weaves together realistic technical details, mystery, suspense and romance into one intriguing story. We get a very realistic understanding of the interaction and partnership between...more

Though I liked this story, couldn't put it down, I wasn't a big fan of Kate, the heroine, mainly because she was a little too feminist-like to me. Here she is, a girl who has a wonderful man practically groveling at her feet, yet she's rude, boorish, a bit mean, and definitely acts unappreciative of this new, loving man in her life. I truly can't stand women like this--those with chips on their shoulders as if having something to prove to the world, especially men. (My mother, however, also read...more

This book excited me so much when I got my first taste of the O'Malleys. I remember being very sad to finish it, despite the fact that I had five more ahead of me, simply because I didn't think anyone could be as cool as Kate O'Malley. (Luckily I was wrong.) The character of Kate is so excellently dynamic and really what makes her book special. I find her job as a hostage negotiator fascinating. She's independent. She has nerves of steel, yet as the reader you also get to see her deepest emotion...more

Dee Henderson is one of those authors you hear about online and I have not read. So I found a book on the shelf that sounded interesting.

I seriously dislike having religion pushed at me both in real life and in writing. I have no issues if you take part in religious activities or read religion based fiction and non-fiction stories but they are not for me.

At nearly 100 pages there have been two incidences of characters pushing religion upon another character. IMO never appropriate. I didn't resea...more

I thought that this book was really good. I picked it up to start reading it and I couldn't put it down once I started. I had this book recommended to me and I loved it. This book started out really fast. It grabbed your attention right away and then kept it throughout that whole book. There were a couple spots in the book where it was getting a little slow, but it always got back going again. In this book there were two main characters. They both had things that they wanted to do and get done....more

Kate O'Malley is a girl who can handle any situation and that is because she is a negotiator. She can look bored when a gun is pointed at her head, but nothing could prepare her for the bomb that blew up the MetroAir airlines not only that but Kate is getting threatening phone calls and is being sent black roses.Kate is starting to realize that the bomber is after her and that it might be her fault of 214 lives. All the evidence points to Tony Jr. Emerson, the one person who brings back bad child...more

The O'Malley series is about a group of young adults who have formed a family, they aren't blood related. They grew up in an orphanage and looked out for each other, and then later changed their last names to O'Malley, giving each kid who everyone wants, a family.

The Negotiator is the first in the series, about Kate O'Malley. It's starts right off in a bank, Kate is called in and finds that there is a FBI agent as one of the hostages.
Eventually they strike up a friendship, but Dave (Mr. FBI) wa...more

The first book in the O'Malley series. I read... no, I devoured the prequel while in London, and fortunately Mum owns more of the series, so I'm slowly working my way through them. They're really very good. Christian without (IMHO at least) being preachy.

I simply love Kate O'Malley. The 2nd eldest of the adopted bunch, Kate is a tough, justice-driven cop. She is a competitor and likes her coffee sweet. And cares deeply for those she loves.

I understand her struggles to come to terms with the Christian faith and becoming a believer. Her questions and skepticism is very logical, and I am drawn to her character because I feel the same in many ways.

I love that Dave is back (apparently I have a thing here lately for main male characters with British...more

Dee Henderson kicks off her book The Negotiator with one impression: Try to keep up because everything’s about to go on full-throttle. And, it’s true! Henderson’s book was fast paced and suspenseful, following the hectic life of a hostage negotiator, Kate O’Malley, a young woman with a troubled past who spends her days just trying to survive. This female heroine sees her occupation as more than a job. She sees it as a duty. On call twenty-four hours a day, Kate attempts to balance her job and h

I read it too long ago to remember it being a "stand out", but I enjoyed it.

FBI agent Dave Richman from "Danger in the Shadows" is back. He's about to meet Kate O'Malley, and his life will never be the same. She's a hostage negotiator. He protects people. He's about to find out that falling in love with a hostage negotiator is one thing, but keeping her safe is another! Introducing the O'Malleys, an inspirational group of seven, all abandoned or orphaned as teens, who have made the choice to be...more

What a fantastic book! Mystery, romance, Christianity, suspense, it really had it all. I liked the 1st one, but I think I liked this even more. It has experienced Christians, a baby Christian and a woman on the fence that has someone explain things to her in an awesome way. I would really hope that this book would open the doors for some also in that situation. From what I understand the rest of the books highlight other O'Malley siblings. I hope it also includes what has happened to Kate.

I liked it, though I enjoyed Danger in the Shadows more. I just felt like I was reading the same story again. Guy meets girl in danger. Guy vows to protect girl. Guy and girl fall in love. They resolve the danger and live happily ever after. The main characters feel similar as well. The plotline may have been very different, but the two main female characters from both books are very much alike. And the main male character in this one was one of the MC's from the previous.

I did like it and I re...more

Coming from a blended family, I love books that feature them in a positive light. The O'Malley family put themselves together with little more than love and determination. Their successes, then, prove that they knew exactly what they needed in life. Their family unit feels more realistic than many real families. They have ups, downs and all the normal family drama but they make the decision to stay committed to the family each and every day. I have known people who are related by blood who throw...more

My sister recommended the O'Malley series. It's my first experience with Christian suspense. Apparently, I read the second one first, but no harm done. The story starts out great, then it took me half of the book to really get into it. I liked that there's a little bit of everything. The romance isn't cheesy, the religion isn't preachy or overdone, and it's squeaky clean. The thing I had the hardest time with was reading fictional speculation--- it was so tempting to flip to the end and to find...more

The Negotiator is Book 1 in Dee Henderson's O'Malley Series.

Kate O'Malley's specialty is hostage situations, and she's learned to depend only on herself in a crisis. But now Kate's a target. Someone's been sending her black roses - maybe the same person who just blew up an airplane and blamed her. Faced with the shocking evidence that the bomber may be someone she knows, Kate has to decide if FBI special agent Dave Richman - and the God he trusts so implicitly - is all he's supposed to be.

A Fantastic Book! This is NOT a chick flick. The story starts out with a bang and keeps on going. There is a little bit of everything, an engaging, suspenseful tale with Christian values. There's romance built through trust and admiration without sex, action and suspense without profanity, and faith present naturally. I really enjoyed the technical details that made it realistic for me especially the interaction between the various law-enforcement and civil protectors. I loved seeing how they wo...more

The high rating is what drew me to the book. Unfortunately, it was one of those books I could've put down and never picked up again without losing any sleep. While other reviewers were able to get involved with the characters, I found them 'campy'. I just couldn't get into them! Kate and Dave fell in love way too fast and I don't think a Christian book always has to deal with someone 'coming to Christ'. I was really looking forward to starting another great series (like Joel Rosenberg's The Ezek...more

I am not usually a proponent of "christian" fiction, I find most of it entirely too preachy. On the other hand, Dee Hendersen has found a way to tell an engaging, suspenseful tale with Christian values. There's romance without graphic sex scenes or even premarital foibles, there's action and adventure (pretty serious stuff too) without the use of profane language, and the dialogue is well written, the faith deeply rooted, without being simplistic or preachy. Two thumbs up! (And the rest of the s...more

The “We are Northwood Book Club,” met on Feb 4 to discuss THE NEGOTIATOR. It is the first in the O’Malley series. The previous month we read the prequel in the series, Danger in the Shadows, which introduced us to Dave Richman, a Christian and FBI agent protecting his sister from a “real nut case,” while she is falling in love with Adam, another good guy with Christian values. Like I've said before, we wanted to know more about the O'Malley family.

The O’Malley’s were children orphans who pull to...more

A friend of mine on goodreads.com recommended this book to me (thanks Sarah!) and I was able to get a free ebook from amazon.com. Wow, this story grabs your attention from the start and pulls you right in! Kate O’Malley is a negotiator and she is SO good at her job! She thinks she’s an only child but growing up in an orphanage she quickly became family with 6 other orphans and gave themselves the last name O’Malley. I LOOOOOOVED getting to know them and seeing how they look out for one another....more
