"The Rosary" is an exquisitely timeless story of Jane Champion, beauteous of soul and voice but enclosed in a plain though intensely feminine body. When the star singer has an illness, Jane is called upon to sing "The Rosary" which she does with amazing sweetness, power and beauty. Garth Dalmain, extremely handsome and artistically gifted in his own right, found that the veil is lifted to reveal his perfect soul mate. Believing that his love would not stand the test...more
This romance novel was apparently the best-seller of the year 1910, so I thought I would test the durability of its appeal. What immediately struck me was that this tale of the young English gentry working through the difficulties of their love lives in order to reach the safe haven of engagement and marriage is exactly the kind of thing that P.G. Wodehouse was parodying (there is even an eccentric Duchess with peculiar taste in pets here); so even if no...more
Because it is a contemporary novel of the early 20th century, it is a very 'gentle' book, interested in the relationship of the two main characters and a few of...more

Jane Champion is in her thirties and very plain. Gareth Dalmain is several years younger, good looking and an artist. Jane may not be pretty but she is one cool girl and everyone likes her. She is smart and no nonsense and the sort of girl that we would all like as a friend.
She may be plain but she can sing beautifully( think Susan Boyle). One day she is asked to sing in the place of...more

Everytime you read a book about a woman falling inlove with a blind man you think of Jane Eyre ; this is the reason why I started to read this book.I don't understand why people say that it resembles Jane Eyre!Sorry to burst your bubble but this book is nothing like that!Yes,this was a cute romantic story but it wasn't as intensive as the story of Jane , while the Jane Eyre book was about a rich man falling inlove with a maid and then loses everything and ends up blind w...more
The songs that play a role in the storyline were actual pieces of music that would have been familiar to many readers of the era. You can listen to "The Rosary", by E. Nevin, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aabog4..., with lyrics here:http://lyricsplayground.com/alph...

It could have been half the length, though, if the author hadn't described a scene, and later in the book have one of the participants describe the scene, and later on have the other participant describe the scene...you get the scene...Quality work it's not, though, don't credit the reviewers who compare her with Austen and the Bro...more
I don't read romance, as a rule, but this very sweet story of mistaken sacrifice thwarting love was a pleasurable read. The tone was melodramatic, as was typical of the era, but I far prefer that to some of the crass and crude "romances" of today.
