Turn Off the Fat Genes: The Revolutionary Guide to Losing Weight
Breakthrough genetic research indicates that genes are not just onoff switches for characteristics we can't control (like gender or eye color). Some genes, including those that shape our bodies, actually adapt to outside influences. In Turn Off the Fat Genes, Dr. Neal Barnard draws on this cutting-edge research to create a revolutionary new program for activating thin gene...more

A more accurate title for this book would have been "How not to give your Fat Genes raw material to make body fat with while still being happy with the food you eat".
This is done by eating high fiber, low processed, and low fat foods. Note the conjunction. In order for the diet to work the food you eat has to have all 3 qualities at the same time. Calories still count, but according to the book if you eat high fiber, low processed, low fat food you will feel full on fewer cal...more

This is an excellent book with lots of good information. Some may have a hard time subscribing to the whole and complete elimination of animal products (animal fats), but it continues to highlight America's unhealthful lifestyle of eating and how much excess protein we take in as a country/people.

Barnard looks at genes for taste, the hormone leptin, LPL (converts dietary fat to body fat), metabolism (including diet damage and insulin resistance), exercise. Barnard recommends very low fat vegan food choices of fruit, vegetables, grains and beans. He suggests a three week trial period to reset tastes for fatty/salty/sweet food. Almost half the book consists of recipes.

And he gives very thorough descriptions of how to change your diet to improve your health, lose weight, or whatever your long term goal might be. It's very non-confrontation- he says to just give it 3 weeks and if you don't like it, go back to your old ways [but most likely you'll receive several benefits after just those 3 weeks that...more
Just another diet book. It had a few good insights, but if you are looking for any kind of profound insights from modern genetics, you won't find much depth here. Basically, it's just another eat less animal, less fat, carbs are OK book.
