I only discovered this recipe a couple of years ago, but it has already become one of my favorites. It's hard to believe that the different ingredients go together! In fact, they complement each other perfectly.

One might like this book for many reasons: because it's a love story, because it's unconventional, quite bohemian [amelie poulain-like] and maybe even because it's surrealistic and s.f. i called this book a collective bildungsroman, because i have the feeling all characters undergo major changes during the book.

There has been three translations of "L'ecme des jours" Brian Harper's translation "Foam of the Daze" (my press TamTam Books), "Mood Indigo" (American trans.) and this British edition translated by Stanley Chapman "Froth on the Daydream." Translations are a fascinating subject matter, because basically it is how one looks at a book and how they tell the tale in a lanugage that is suibtable for that book or culture.

Since I am the publisher, I of course nod towards Brian's translation - one becau...more

A love story involving a parasitic water lily, a treatise against work, a marvelous world of ingenious acts and actions, this book is all this and more.

description

From the beginning all the way through to the finale, my attention was fairly riveted on what-happens-next. This novel is written in a style that seems to me a cross--or even a sort of fertilization from/towards noir-->cyberpunk via a surrealist/jazz medium.

Vian's writing is a marvel of a sort of free and spirited invention. Each scene springs up like some bright dazzling wonder. This sounds ridiculous, maybe? But it's not: it's fun.

Each character has his very particular view, this is true o...more

In a nutshell, L'Ecume Des Jours reads like an Edith Wharton novel set in Pepperland (sorry, non-cinephiles for the obscure reference). The book rewires your brain after the first 30 pages; if it doesn't, this book is not for you. Themes/motifs: class struggle, love, flowers, Sartre, mice, death and cocktails. My favorite image from the book is when the protagonist loses his fortune and takes a job at a weapons factory. You see, though, the rifle barrels are grown from seeds that must be warmed...more

"Froth on the Daydream" is a timeless, atypical book between literature, poetry and surrealism.

Poetry is prominent in Boris Vian's (real name) novels: sometimes crazy, sometimes touching, always fair. "Boris Vian" loved words, words games, musical phrases. We, readers, walk in Poetry. This is a major feature of Boris Vian's work as a novelist.
"Froth on the Daydream" ( "l'écume des jours" ) is a moving love story, evolving into a strange world. With a humorous and satirical tone, Boris Vian disc...more

The first half of this book is a fairly straightforward love story/love quadrangle between four of the five main characters, a group of well-to-do, work-weary twentysomethings: Colin, Chloe, Chick, and Alise. They are accompanied on their many adventures by Colin's butler Nicolas, a rather formal 29-year-old professional who escapes into his ladies' man lifestyle when off duty.

The second half of the book becomes much more surreal, for no real apparent reason. Rooms begin to change shape on thei...more

It was published in 1947 (in French, and published in translation in 1967) and is apparently a sideswipe at existentialism. However, apart from the puns on Jean-Paul Sartre's name and his book titles, that probably won't be very obvious. It actually reads more like an outgrowth of early 1900s surrealism, albeit that it has a plot that develops more or less rationally, and characters who one can have some emotional reaction to - though I confess I didn't warm to the incredibly rich Colin or his r...more

was given to me by Lucile, who thought I should know something about Oulipo.

The first half of the novel is madcap and saucy--everyone seems to be wearing sea-green knee stockings or leopard-print slips with bright blue buttons, and dancing to Duke Ellington. The hints of darkness underneath all the ice skating and pianococktails (Vian is a very amusing neologist) come out in the second half of the novel, when the "nénuphar" (water lily) begins to grow in the lungs of the protagonist's plaintiv...more

Život je zábava a jazz (přístroj...more

A friend gave this to me formy birthday last year, and I was very pleased to have read it. Extremely modern and strange, Boris Vian's book written in 1947 - hugely popular in France - is a real find. Echoes of his loves like jazz, and futurist gadgets, sit side-by-side his mocking satire against the existenalists (though he was a good friend with Satre). The book is ultimately a very strange chronicle of love.

Boris Vian was a French polymath: writer, poet, musician, singer, translator, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. He is best remembered for novels such as L’Écume des jours and L'Arrache-cœur (translated into English as Froth on the Daydream and Heartsnatcher, respectively). He is also known for highly controversial "criminal" fiction released under the pseudonym Vernon Sullivan and some of his...more
