Abandoned by her lover, thoroughly modern Dougless Montgomery finds herself alone and brokenhearted in an old English church. She never dreamed that a love more powerful than time awaited her there... until Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck, a sixteenth-century knight, appeared.

Drawn to him by a bond so sudden and compelling that it defied reason, Dougless knew that Nic...more

This is the very first romance book, which made me smile, laugh and cry. Read it three times and decided that I had to have it for myself. So now, it is sitting very nicely in my book cabinet, beckoning me to read it again for I-don't-know-how-many times.

I must say, this is best book of all by Jude Deveraux. About time-travel romance, finding and recognizing true love even if its separated by decades of time. So, you will get to read about Nicholas realising his true love in Douglass's modern t...more

There was quite a lot to sludge through in order to get to the romance in this 464 page novel that seemed more like fiction than romance--until the very end. There was a heavy reincarnation theme that began showing itself in the characters that appeared in the beginning (Robert, Gloria) and carried into the second half of the story.

A Knight in Shining Armor takes place in England (1560-1988) and stars Nicholas Stafford as the hero and Dougless Montgomery as the heroine. It begins in 1564 to fin...more

Updated review:
Upon rereading this over 10 years later, I can say that it is not exactly what I remembered. I cringed at how weak and pathetic the heroine was. The "falling in love" part didn't have the spark I remember; what does Nicholas see in Douglas in the first place??? She's a basket case who allows men to walk all over her.
So "the thrill is gone"... Below is my review of what I remembered of the story. This book just doesn't stand the test of time for me.

Also for audio fans: read it i...more

I read it first when it came out back in the late 80's and have re read it so many times with each read just as fantastic.

Its one of those books that impact you and stays with you forever. Love or hate the ending- it is a romance must read.

I know what you're thinking...the book's title ALONE should have been my first "red-flag", but you would be wrong. I actually read this because a neighbor had it and physically ran it over to me one day last summer. I thought, "Sure, I'll give it a go." Luckily, she didn't take anything I thought about the book personally! Phew!!

Jude Deveraux is a famously popular writer, and since I am NOT about bashing the writer, I will only give my opinion based on her work. Unfortunately, I have nothing pos...more

This is my all time favorite romance novel, which I've read more than once.

Nicholas is a real live Knight in Shining Armor sent to comfort a heartbroken Douglass in 1988. Destined to be soul mates through all eternity, the two set out to clear Lord Nicholas' name and right the wrongs done during his Elizabethan life. Just as he gets used to the weird inventions and strangness of the twentieth century, they are whisked back through time to 1560 where Douglass gets to experience medieval life.

I LOVED this book. I would have given it 5 stars, but the ending made me want to pull my hair out. I can't really say more without giving anything away. Years ago when I first read it, I remember discussing it with a friend of mine and crying over how much I hated the ending. She said that when she read it, she wanted to slather the book in gravy and feed it to her dog. I thought that was the PERFECT way to describe how I felt after finishing this book.

HOWEVER, with that being said, I still hig...more

this book starts in a contemporary setting and has the characters (a woman from modern day and a man from the Elizabethan era) time traveling, first unintentionally and then very intentionally, to be with each other. A lot of detail is given to little things...the smells and sounds she encounters when she goes back in time...to paint a vivid picture of what life must have been like...as well as the novelty with which he learns about things we take for granted--as simple as pen and paper--that we...more

I really enjoyed this book for what it was. I would have given it 3 1/2 but I did not want to give it 3. It is a time travelling romance story about a woman who found herself. I adored both main characters and the amount of humour injected to keep the book flowing. There was a certain amount of drama but not too much and poltics has been avoided so the plot races. There were a couple of Elizabethan references I had never heard of and will never see swaddling clothes in the same way again. So for...more

A two-for one in that you get both modern relationship tango as well as historical romance; the delicious premise is that Dougless is the youngest daughter of a rich family who always gets everything wrong. She's left by her boyfriend in the middle of England while on vacation, prays for a knight to save her, and one appears from the 1560s, complete with armor. He tries to attack cars and is fascinated by magazines, is crude and chivalrous at once, and there's some great sexual tension building...more

Best historical romance book ever written! A Knight in Shining Armor is a must read. Imagine traveling back in time to the medieval ages to meet your soulmate!

This was listed as #5 on theromancereader.com list of top 100 romances. I'd read it before, but wanted to do so again after reading one reader's description. Heartbroken and abandoned, Dougless Montgomery cries her heart out over Nicholas Stafford's tomb and the next thing she knows, he is standing there wanting to know what she wants. Of course, she doesn't believe he's from the 16th century, but agrees to help him none the less. Nicholas was brought forward three days before he was to be execu...more

I have decided not to continue reading this book after reading twenty pages. Too much dysfunction for me. I'm in a knot right now and can hardly breath. Too close to real life.

After taking a shower and thinking about what bothered me, I have this to say: It was too one sided, too obvious to the reader that Robert was insincere. He would have done more than take her to an expensive restaurant for dinner. He would have been pulling and loosening his lure constantly so she had reason to believe he...more

A classic, but I read this in 2013, and so the contemporary (mid-'80s) part reads like history to me (blue eyeshadow? Curlers? Skinny jeans?). I preferred the medieval parts, especially the many careful details contrasting both the physical aspects--mud, blackened teeth, danger to women--and social expectations--i.e., everyone should know how to play a musical instrument, how exactly women should value themselves. This last was a good debate: Dougless "lives with" her boyfriend in the present, a...more

Recommended to Heidi by: my high school music teacher

In 1990 I was a senior in high school, and I was friends with my music teacher. It was one of those odd things I never understood how it happened, though I think it started when the drama teacher cast me for the lead in Fiddler on the Roof but I couldn’t sing. (That’s a long, weird story. Don’t ask.) She was charged with fixing that minor detail, which led to a lot of before and after school private lessons. At this point of my life things were starting to come seriously apart. I’d weathered som...more

This book had so many gaps and unbelievable points in the plot. OK, I know that a time-traveling romance isn't SUPPOSED to be believable, and I'm willing to suspend belief for that major plot line, but then why did the author have to put minor unbelievable plot devices in when it would have been easy to do otherwise? For instance, I don't think a private living area of a castle that is partially open to the public would have an unlocked door between the private and public area, merely marked by...more

soooo cliche. It's truly a fairy tale, i mean they kinda all are, but you know, you don't think that while you read them, or after. because in one way or another, most are realistic. somebody dies. you can't have everything. you lose someone. etc. but this isn't the case here. you have this screwed up woman that doesn't know what to do with her life anymore, and she starts crying and then suddenly this perfect guy appears out of nowhere and solves it all. it's interesting because most stories ha...more

How could I not take the romance recommendation from this months tag selector, doughgirl?! I am always looking for a good romance novel and this one was definitely one of the better ones I have read!

Dougless is excited to be taking a month-long romantic vacation to England with her boyfriend, Robert; she is sure he is going to pop the question! However, things do not go quite according to plan and she ends up alone in a small town outside a church that was dedicated to Earl Nicholas Stanford, a...more

Oh my gosh.. I love this book to bits! It is definitely, easily one of my favorite reads in 2012. It was raw, real, funny and most definetely heartbreaking. This book was so richly and perfectly detailed. I got to see the Medieval Times in the eyes of Lessa; the architecture, the culture, the injustice of some of the laws, the food..and basically everything that makes Historal books very interesting. The pacing was just lovely and every page of the book justified its greatness. Despite how commo...more

A Knight in Shining Armor is the second time travel romance I review, and it suddenly occurs to me that it's really a time travel as time travels should be. Not only does it honestly attempt to account for the differences between our time and theirs (Elizabethan England in this case), but it takes the chance to deal with the touchy matter of changing, or rewriting history. A little like in The Temptation, neither of these topics managed to blow my mind with the cleverness of their approach, and...more

A Knight in Shining Armor is a wonderful story in true romantic form. Dougless Montgomery, on a disasterous trip to England with her boorish live in boyfriend and his obnoxious daughter, finds herself stranded at a church in the English countryside after yet another disagreement with the piggish girl and her father. Stuck in a foreign country with no money, no id, and her only option of rescue being to call her family - whose favorite pasttime is telling stories about the problems Dougless gets...more

This book exceeded my expactation by far. I loved the hero and heroine. The heroine was annoying in the beginning of the book, I just wanted to go in there and yell at her for sticking around with that awful man and his spoiled b**** of a daughter. When her boyfriend left her in that chapel the only thing on my mind was good ridance.
When the author said tat the book was about alcoholism I was stunned. I didn't even notice, but now that I think back on it I guess it was in a way when the heroine...more

I think I would have liked this book more if it was currently 1992 or sometime thereabouts. It was written in 1989 and you can definitely tell. There are things about it that are very dated, which sort of makes it cheesy. I really did like the overall story - at least all the time travel, romance part of it. I REALLY did not care for the setup - Dougless's fiancé and daughter were just over the top ridiculous. Not believable at all. And I HATED that Dougless had NO backbone. She never stood up f...more

This is Jude Devereaux at her best. This was the first book I read by Jude Devereaux several years ago and it made me want to read her other books.

I really liked the 16th century historical setting that Douglass Montgomery (what a name for the heroine..haha) finds herself in and how she deals with it (in a typical, comical Jude Devereaux way). Very imaginative and entertaining.

The highlight of this story was the hero, Nicholas, an earl unjustly accused of treason, who was funny, fantastically c...more

This book was poorly written. I don't expect much as a reader. I like simple writing, big words and profound subjects are unnecessary in my opinion to make a book worth while, but this was too painful to even finish. At the beginning of the book I noticed the author uses the characters' names over and over when describing a scene much like the writing you would see in a children's book; "Douglass crossed the street. Douglass saw a chicken and kicked it. Douglass smiled at the chicken and pat it'...more
