The Betrayal is the second book in the Abram's daughters series. If you haven't read the first book go back and start there. This is definitely the kind of series that is supposed to be read in order.
Leah is having a hard time with herself, keeping her sister Sadie's secret. Even though her Aunt knows too it weighs heavy on her heart. She has her beau Jonas to to take her mind off things and also plan the wedding. But even things with him aren't rushing along quite the way they're supposed to. N...more

I absolutely loved this book. It was much better than the first book in the series which I truly enjoyed. The Betrayal continues the story of Sadie's grief and Leah's anticipation of her upcoming wedding to Jonas. It grabs you immediately and continues to pull you in until, by the end, you are just heartbroken with Leah. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

A quick read for the second book of the series that ties up a couple of loose ends. Good writing style, I wish there were more details of Amish life and traditions. Lewis keeps writing about celery at Amish weddings, so I finally had to google it.

This was such a heart-wrenching read! Yet I still want to read the rest of the books in the series. Beverly Lewis's books are incredibly readable and I finished this in two days. I was engrossed in the descriptions of the land and the food of Lancaster County and truly would like to visit it some day. As for the characters, I was taken in, yet again, by Abram's daughters. Sadie's grief and Leah's desire to settle down with her betrothed were just as engaging as in the last book and I was pleased...more
I've always been fascinated with Amish culture and their way of life, so it's about time I tried a Beverly Lewis book. I didn't realize when I picked this book up from the library that it was second in a series, and while it would have been helpful to read the first book, it wasn't necessary. I do like how Beverly Lewis pulls you in and makes you feel like you're part of the family. It kind of gave me the same feeling I get when I read the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, that feeling...more

The more I read of this series, the better that I like it. It's a very interesting, although innocent book about the lives of an Amish family, and the hard times that they go through as well.
Although they live a very simple life, they still face many of the problems that us "MODERN" people do.
Although it's a fictional tale, it still gives great insight into the lives of these people. What a fascinating life they do live!

Have finally finished this second book after finishing the first in the series, "The Covenant". Both books are an enjoyable break from my usual UF/PNR reading.
Unfortunately, in book 1 the author, Beverly Lewis, uses the word "barefoot" repeatedly - to the point of annoyance. Overuse of that one word detracts from the story to the extent that I almost did not finish reading it. Fortunately she is not over using "barefoot" - or any other word - in this second installment, but then, it takes place...more

I liked this series because it dealt with a taboo topic: children born out of wedlock in a strict Christian community. The story is mostly believable, and has unpredictable plot twists.I like books by Beverly Lewis because they are a pleasant read. Lewis often writes books set in Amish country. I used to live close to several Amish settlements, so I had a little window into Amish life. I also enjoy her usage of Pennsylvania Dutch, which I like to pretend I understand, because it's derived from G...more
The Betrayal is book two in the Abram's Daughters series and continues where The Covenant left off. The storyline picks up in the midst of Sadie's grief following the premature birth and death of her illegitimate child. A burden she is mostly carrying alone as the only ones even aware that Sadie had given birth is her sister, Leah, her aunt, Lizzie and the doctor who helped with the delivery. Ironically, Doctor Schwartz also happens to be Derry's father and he pieces together that the child that...more
This is a sequel to The Covenant by Beverly Lewis and was just as good as the first. Sometimes I am disappointed with sequels because they seem to drag and don't have much substance. I liked this one because it's simply a continuation of the same story, same characters, but moving on with their lives and challenges and faith in the Amish community in Pennsylvania. Beverly is writing about a family that is growing up and going through the changes that typical families go through, with daughters w...more

This book was much more of a page turner than The Covenant (the first book in the series). It gets easier to tell which character is telling their story.
In this book we continue the complicated lives of the 2 older sisters but we also get to learn more about Aunt Lizzie and the 2 younger sisters.
This book satisfied my curiosity but definitely leaves me searching for more. I have a feeling I will be reading the entire series very soon. I might have to read others in between though, this is not a...more

I hopped right into this after reading the first book in the series, hoping for a happy resolution on at least some of the storylines. Alas, things started going really pear-shaped in this one, for lots of characters. I finished it 50 miles away from home and—hilarious though this is, it says how much I wanted to keep going—I went to a public library in the city I was visiting and sat there for more than an hour, reading what I could of book three. Almost everything takes a turn for the worse in...more
I understand that this is a book in a series... I picked it up after being frustrated with all the open-ended questions from The Covenant, the first book in the series. I'd hoped that those questions would be answered and I'd be satisfied.
That was SO not the case. Not only were my questions NOT answered, several more were heaped on the pile.
There are 5 books in this series and I cannot subject myself to the torture of adding more mysteries that may or may not get solved.

The Betrayal by Beverly Lewis tells the story of Leah Ebersol and her close family. Leah lives with her parents and four sisters in an Amish community.
The Ebersol family is old-fashioned and very religious. Leah is a loving and obedient daughter. Sadie had become pregnant and had given birth prematurely. The baby had died, and now Sadie is listless and depressed.
We follow Leah as she is missing her boyfriend Jonas, who has gone off to a carpenter's apprenticeship. Leah's loyalty to Jonas is tes...more

I liked this second book a lot more than the first one, so I have to say, if you are interested in the Amish community, this is a look into it. (However, being Mormon and seeing how many books and TV shows falsely portray my beliefs, I can't know how accurate this author is on the Amish life. It appears to be well researched . . .) I am now more committed than before to finish this series. I really curious about where all of these characters will end up.
There was no cohesive storyline to the novel ... but it rambles on in a comfortable and sometimes exciting way. I enjoyed the experience of reading it. Not as great as the first book, but still enjoyable.
I also enjoy the goodness of Leah, a main character. Though, the shout out to God at the end of the book (and at the end of the first book) felt a bit akward.
After reading the first two books, I finally understand the titles!

"The Betrayal" picks up right where "The Covenant" left off, showing another year in the life of the Ebersol girls. Sadie is faced with some tough consequences, while Leah is torn between duty and a promise. The sleepy Amish town of Gobbler's Knob is full of enough secrets and romance, to keep readers turning pages late into the night. I have now become completely enmeshed with Beverly Lewis' interesting settings and wonderful characters!

I love Beverly Lewis books. There is nothing more relaxing than curling up with one of her books. Her books are a true getaway. Although I am one of the "English" folk her books draw me in and I feel I can be one of the Amish women who work hard but have peace away from the hustle and bustle of our modern society. There is always dilemma and a hook to keep the reader reading, but the peace of the Amish countryside is a nice vacation.
I enjoyed this book as well as the first, but I started to get frustrated with the characters and their lack of clarity with each other. I understand it's part of their culture, but it was emotionally hard for me to read and not scream at them to stop being so stupid! Needless to say, I'll need a little break before I read the next books in the series. But I can see why these books are well loved by so many!
I really enjoyed the first book of this series, but this one started to get on my nerves. They all just don't talk to each other which leads to more and more heart ache for everyone. SO frustrating. I called my cousin who has read the whole series to tell me what happens because I couldnt handle reading 3 more books.
I really enjoyed this book I will say right from the end of book 1 I knew where she was going with Jonas. It makes me sad it truly feels like the ones who live their lives righteously have more trials although I am sure it's not true. I'll repeat my attitude that Sadie is selfish and truly resentful to those around her asking them to do things she would never do. The reading was easy and good. I anxiously wait to see how the plot thickens.
I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. The first half of the book I would have given 2 stars..it was really slow and not many questions were answered. In fact, Lewis doesn't mention the baby once! Is it alive? It it dead? Apparently you have to read book #3 to get that question answered. Right before I gave up on it, it started to pick up. The book still doesn't go quite as deep as I would like, it seems I am always yearning for a little more. But the end was interesting enough that I picked up #3...more
