Wow! Que livro! Que viagem!
É sem duvida alguma um livro incrível com uma série de reviravoltas extraordinárias!
A história é absolutamente cativante e as descrições históricas que a autora faz são muito interessantes.
É impossível não criar uma forte ligação com a Matty e a todas as outras pessoas que fizeram parte da sua vida :)
É um livro repleto de emoções que nos faz rir mas também chorar. A imagem de marca da autora (que eu ainda não conhecia :P) está presente ao longo de todo o livro e se...more

People have described 'Never Look Back' as one of the best intriguing novels Lesley Pearce has written. I contend she is the most lazy author I have ever read, and if anything, should have put this particular story in seven books and not one. She has the amazing gift of skipping to the end, wilfully overlooking what would be the more interesting story and preferring to refer back to the alleged incident in one or two sentences. She has the amazing gift of skipping to the end, wilfully overlooking what would be the more interesting story and preferring to refer back to the alleged incident in one or two sentences. Example: Matilda is ready to embark on a dangerous journey with her baby on her back in a canoe in troubled waters with a native American guide, gets in the boat and suddenly in the story it's two weeks later and nothing more than a quick blurb after the fact said! Thanks for that. For a book entitled 'Never Look Back' this author breaks this rule consistently.

One should be warned of the quality of the book by the simple fact Lesley fantastically has the sun, like a huge orange fireball (page 113, 2000 edition, Penguin softback) sinking into the sea on the Eastern seaboard!

I am grateful that my father in law found this in a skip and I didn't have any regrets to purchase it. That said, like mocking a terrible movie, I have enjoyed a laugh and a shock about many issues this book has and how angry her stereotypes and cliche have made me. According to Lesley Pearce (and the anti-male protagonist, Matilda) all men, except the main good characters, are evil, callous, swarthy, rough looking, insolent, drunk and sex-crazed. Matilda contradicts herself often, for example, she is shocked when she arrives in San Francisco about the above said debauchery by the men there yet she soon embarks on making an entertainment hall which serves drink and has dancing girls! She is so shocked by the drunkenness and dead animals in the streets, she won't allow her own daughter to move there, presuming the poor sod Cissie left behind will do the drudgery, and then when San Francisco finally cleans up, produces ladies of finery, schools of education, respectable churches, etc. Matilda seems to forget about that objective and even that she had a child. When Matilda visits her daughter and family back in Oregon, absolutely nothing is said of the visit until after the visit, some weeks or months later, in a kind of 'looking back' or retrospective way. (*SPOILER ALERT* and then we are expected to believe Matilda had any relationship with her young daughter at all and that she actually cared when she died of cholera at age six.)

And true to Lesley Pearce's nature (if her regular writing style is similar to that of this book) *SPOILER ALERT* Everyone dies in childbirth. And if not that, it's death by trees, random gunshots, and cholera. I am sure that people died a lot quite often in that time, but you grow to get an uncomfortable tingling sensation when everything is going okay and people are happy and reconciled, because just around the corner, somebody really important to the plot dies.

In addition to unjust murder of key characters, Lesley Pearce should be ashamed of her old fashioned stereotypes of people who are not white like herself. Mexican men are all described as having droopy mustaches. The banker is Jewish with a clearly Jewish name (Jacob Weinburg) and has a prominent nose and is ugly, a point which the main characters go out of their way to comment on. (Even though he was nice enough to lend money to them.) And to top it off, she even describes a maid entering the room as a NEGRESS, and this isn't even from the main character's point of view (perhaps forgiven due to the era) but is an author's narration. Shameful. All the black characters are described as black, negro, dark skinned, etc, and never simply as a character. They also all have wide grins, thick lips and wide, splayed out noses. Yeah, we know. But you might want to grind it in a bit more and have Delores 'done make a mess of chicken.'

It has been said that Lesley Pearce has done some research to these novels but got the Mormon leader's name wrong (it's Brigham Young, not Brigham Jones) A simple internet search would have given you that. Generally stallions are not intermingled with mares when marching along and riding in company as they cause trouble fighting with other horses and continually look for mares in heat. (Her Captain Russell rode a stallion whilst Matilda rode a mare in one scene.) When the mare gets out of hand and runs away, the author believes the mare has run for a couple of miles (does she have any idea how far a couple of miles is?) before our hero could take it in hand, on his stallion, to stop her. Matilda hasn't got any idea how to stop the mare in flight even though she was part of a wagon train amongst people riding in a society where all transportation was by horse. It would be akin to not knowing the common knowledge that to turn a car right or left you turn the steering wheel either way.

The author claims that simple farmers who travel in the wagon train wouldn't have had experience with a firearm and only she, who has had a few weeks target practice, was able to bring down a deer. How insulting to the men on this trip who, unless they are all dolts, would have had time to practice themselves, considering their chief source of food would be from what they shot...and what farmer doesn't know how to use a shotgun anyway?

Captain Russell forgets that he did find his wife Evelyn interesting, describing her as being accomplished, pretty, and amusing company and that the marriage was based on a firm foundation of compatibility and perhaps love would grow from it. Then very soon after this was said, after he had sexed Matilda, he described Evelyn as being 'so empty-headed that an hour or two alone with her seemed endless.' Which is it? It is convenient to make the wife who is cheated on into a monster to justify the adultery, but it would have been far more refreshing and less overdone to portray the wife as normal, and Matilda just a tad more sexy and the reason why he strayed was simply a basic need. It would be nice if people were honest about such things.

Matilda names her dancing girls entertainment saloon (classy) London Lil's after the poor dear Lily, the preacher's wife who would have fainted dead away if she weren't dead already at the honour of her name on the board. She went out of her way as a minister's wife to avoid the appearance of all evil. What an insult to her name and memory!

I am beginning chapter 24, roughly a hundred pages to the end and I have made a prediction which I wrote in the book, that Captain Russell will die very shortly after he legally divorces Evelyn and is finally free either from the military or his wife to be with Matilda again to spend out the rest of their days in love and peace. Do you think she will get her wish? Me neither!

One star for entertainment value and late night discussions in bed with my husband about the absurdity of this novel and its so-called popularity!!! (less)

I'm truly torn as to how to review this book. On one hand it created a sweeping sense of time and place, on the other, it felt like an author's first book. Tal como o outro conta-nos a história duma MULHER CORAGEM! E é ao mesmo tempo uma lição de História: a História do EUA do final do Séc. XIX!. Um 2 em 1!

O livro prende desde o primeiro parágrafo e "obriga" a virar página atrás de página, quase sem nos apercebermos! Deu-me imenso prazer lê-lo, teve momentos divertidos, outros em que as lágrimas me vieram aos olhos (e eu não sou de lágrima fácil…) mas nunca momentos mortos ou desinteressantes.

Lesley Pearse sabe trabalhar as personagens: desde personagens fortes mas bondosos, personagens que precisavam da força de outros para continuar, personagens menos bondosos que se aproveitavam das fragilidades dos outros, à personagem principal Matilda, consegue prende-nos a elas desde o início!

Matilda é uma mulher cheia de força a quem nem mesmo as adversidades, os desgostos e as perdas ao longo da trama abatem e que apesar disso ou exactamente por isso, nunca mudou o seu carácter, nunca deixou de ser a pessoa que era; para além de uma mulher forte, determinada e inteligente, um coração do tamanho do Mundo com um enorme amor ao próximo! De criança de origem humilde e com uma infância difícil num bairro pobre de Londres a uma das mulheres mais importantes de São Francisco, leva-nos através da história da sua vida, a percorrer caminhos que nunca imaginámos, a acompanhar uma História, que mesmo não sendo directamente a nossa, mudou o Mundo e leva-nos a conhecer homens e mulheres, cheios de coragem e medos numa travessia hoje impossível de imaginar, desde a Londres do Séc. XIX ao Oeste Americano, à corrida ao ouro, uma travessia carregada de perigos mas que não desistem de perseguir o sonho de dias melhores, mesmo arriscando a própria vida…

E afinal não são romances cor-de-rosa (afinal onde terei ido buscar esta ideia?), mas histórias de vida, que vindas do passado nos dão, para além de uma lição de História, se a quisermos ver, uma lição para o futuro!

Para terminar, simplesmente ADOREI! E vou ler os outros, definitivamente!

Absolutely love this book! I have read thousands of books but this one is my all time favourite book. I have read it soooo many times! I just fell in love with the characters and this is the only book that has ever made me cry....several times. Inicialmente quando comecei a ler o livro, fiquei um pouco apreensiva por dois motivos: primeiro, pensei ser um romance muito pesado, coisas muito românticas e cor-de-rosa, esse não é o meu tipo de livros; em segundo, este é um livro em que a história remonta a 1842, eu não gosto muito de livros que contenham muita história (no sentido histórico dos acontecimentos). A maneira como a personagem principal, Matilda Jennings, evolui ao longo da obra é excepcional. Matilda vive num bairro pobre em Londres, com o seu pai e os seus dois irmãos mais novos, é-nos mostrado a maneira horrível como as pessoas sobrevivem. Num dos dias em que Matilda anda a vender ramos de flores pelas ruas mais ricas de Londres, vê Tabitha Milson, uma menina de dois anos quase a ser atropelada por uma carruagem, graças a esse feito heróico a sua vida dá uma volta de 360ºgraus.
Matilda passa a viver com a família Milson, como ama de Tabitha, com o passar dos anos e dos acontecimentos que atormentam esta família, Matilda torna-se mais uma amiga e um suporte para esta família londrina.
Neste livro podemos encontrar as diferenças entre classes, diferentes tipos de pessoas, mas essencialmente podemos seguir a vida de uma jovem pobre que com a sua força, e com o seu amor e carinho ajuda muitas mulheres, homens e crianças ao longo da sua vida.
«Não olhes para trás» é um boa frase para descrever os acontecimentos desta história.

Pontos Positivos:
James- apesar de ter nascido no seio de uma família rica, preocupa-se com as pessoas mais pobres e sem condições de vida. Foi o grande amor da vida de Matilda, que morreu na guerra. Achei que ele não devia de ter morrido, merecia ter um final ao lado dela.
Tabitha- A sua força é uma mais-valia, perdeu os pais quando ainda era jovem, conseguiu seguir o seu sonho de ser médica apesar da sociedade que a rodeava não apoiar as mulheres que queriam seguir esta profissão.

Pontos Negativos:
Zandra – adorei a personagem, mostra-nos que não devemos julgar as pessoas pelo ser exterior ou pelo que os outros dizem delas. Considero como ponto negativo, pois acho que era uma personagem que podia dar mais á historia se não tivesse falecido.
A parte final da história decepcionou-me, pois ao longo do livro os anos vão passando lentamente, quase que de ano a ano, mas quase no final avança muito rápido, dando um pulo na história. Matilda tinha cerca de 40 anos e depois já está com setentas.
Acho que é um excelente livro, através da vida de uma personagem percebemos como era a vida naqueles tempos, ela encontra-se como que no meio de faixas sociais, o que nos mostra os costumes, os “podres” da sociedade, a inveja, o ciúme, a vida degradante a que muitas pessoas se sujeitam procurando uma vida melhor.(less)

This book is amazing! It made me laugh, cry, get mad and fall in love all over again. Matty is such a very strong woman. Full of hopes and dreams, the best thing is that it all came true! With all her hard work, not paying attention to those jealous girls she succeeded. Her father's advice to "never look back" was of great help to almost all the decisions she made in her life. Absolutely adored this book! loved the characters, visualized the environments... got teary eyed during tragedy. It was a well written fantastic book, with a gripping moving story.

The character of Matty was brilliantly written. Actually, most of the characters were superb with ideal portrayals making the reader identify with them, and connect with them.

Foi o primeiro e até agora único livro que li de Lesley Pearse, e foi uma maravilhosa surpresa.

A vida de Matilda foi impressionante, e admito que muito depois de ter terminado o livro, ainda pensava nesta personagem cuja história tanto me marcou.

Muitas vezes dei por mim a rir alto enquanto lia, e noutros momentos, foi difícil conter as lágrimas, chegando mesmo a chorar num relato ou outro.

Lesley Pearse is one of my favourite authors. She tells a good tale, creates warm and memorable characters and Matty was no exception. She leaves London to travel to the USA with as a nursemaid to Tabitha, a little girl she saves from death. The one thing I love about her books is that things aren't always as you'd expect them to be, bad things happen and there's not necessarily a happy ever after. Life isn't like that so this makes the books realistic. This is a huge book - well over 700 pages...more

Maravilhoso! A minha mente está, deveras, triste porque terminei outro excelente livro desta escritora, e sendo um pouco melodramática, não sei que hei-de fazer à minha vida sem ele! Estou mesmo contente por o ter lido. Aqueceu-me a alma, e deixou-me mesmo satisfeita. Houve alturas em que ocorria aquilo que menos queria, mas a história só ficava melhor assim (não no sentido de feliz, por até ficava triste com certos acontecimentos, mas no sentido de enredo). I absolutely loved this book. I would say it falls into the chicklit category although I read it as a historical fiction book the genre challenge. It was so easy to read and such a breath of fresh air after some of the previous heavier going books I have read.
I found it really easy to visualise the people and places of the book and really fell in love with the main character Matilda. I wont give away any of the plot but I think I cried and fell in love each time she did. Brilliant book, loved it...more

I love this book!! My sister read it, thought it was brilliant and sent it to my mum, who read it thought it was brilliant and passed it on to me and you guess it I thought it was brilliant! Akin to pouring vinegar in my eyes.

So much so I wanted to push Matilda under a wagon wheel and have never wanted a central character to catch cholera so much...

That said I finished it so far better than Patrick Rothfuss' second book in the Kingkiller Chronicles.

This book is so full of emotion, and there were times I had to fight tears. The story is complex, following Matilda from the poverty and squalor of London to the unknown of America where she forges a new life, but there are many bumps in the road. A fabulous read.

Oh my.. This book is huge! I have this one in Portuguese and has 783 pages.. Jesus. Despite that, I really, really enjoy this one. It's one of those stories so complete, has so many details.. I think Lesley did a very good work. I recommend it!

To go from childhood to old age in one book and to have so many twists and turns in her life - I could imagine the horrors that the characters must have seen. The descriptions of how San Fansisco was developed in the early settlement years is wonderful.

Cliché after cliché and them some more clichés... And it´s a pity because there was a good backbone for a great plot. But after awhile you feel that you´ve read this same story from others authors an hundred times before. And all is too predictable.

I was completely addicted to this book which I really didn't expect. Made me cry in places which I quite like in a good story.
