In this little book one finds a series of lectures Freud gave in America in 1909. In a brief, encapsulated format he explains the basic principles of psycho-analysis. I wish I knew more about psychology to understand his ideas better, to understand the newness of his approach and to know how things have changed over the past century. Homosexuality is no longer seen as a perversion in the psychological field, and several other ideas originating with Freud have been questioned. Still, his project ...more
È un lib ...more

Cosa dire.
My experience with Freud's work up to reading this book comprised the first hundred pages or so of "The Interpretation of Dreams" and an introductory book by Pamela Thurschwell. I chose to continue my reading of Freud's work with the current book because the "further reading" list at the back of the introductory book described "Five Lectures..." as the best introductory text to Freud's major ideas.
I found it easy to read and I think it gave me a better understanding of the way the theories abou
It's a must-read classic about Freud and his therapy. Suitable for any reader who wonders about the psychoanalysis. Many of the concepts may intimidate the reader; yet reader should consider that these concepts are 100 years old and many changes had happened and have been happening since then.
Sicuramente Freud aveva capito quasi tutto.
This was the first work I read by Freud. It was quite easy compared to his other works. Maybe because it was a lecture given to non-specialists. Highly recommended for those who are not familiar with Freud or psychoanalysis.
Adam Verga
A great summary of many of Freud's most fundamental conclusions on the nature and practice of psychoanalysis.
Like Plato, Freud also uses many memorable and interesting city-soul analogies.
Brian Kim
A brief easy introduction to Freud's discoveries. However this should not be a substitute for his actual work, but rather an encouragement to pursue his finest.

The groundworks of Freudian psychoanalysis from this lecture:

"You will be taught that we humans, with the high standards of our civilization and under the pressure of our internal repressions, find reality unsatisfying quite generally, and for that reason entertain a life of phantasy in which we like to make up for the insufficiencies of

Even though much progress has been done in psychology since the times of Sigmund Freud, the lectures in this compilation still offer a lot of thought-provoking information. Perhaps their appeal stems from a lack of psychology degree on the part of the reader, but, when places in their historic times, these discourses are still surprisingly relevant. Freud concentrates on sex and sexual development, dreams and their significance, as well as various nervous ticks people display.

Vikas Lather
Sigmund Freud had changed the outlook of psychology and elevated it to new heights. I think we owe a great deal to Freud without whom understanding psychology would have been an impossible task.

I have read all five lectures cover to cover and everyone should get their hands on this easy and informative read.
Again, it's hard to judge a rating for this. Psychoanalysis is not a well supported scientific theory and is primarily of historical interest in Psychology these days. However, if you want a good overview of Freudian theory from the mouth of the horse, this is a good place to start.
Thanks Freud, you've made me an official creep (not that I wasn't before but blaaah...)

This was an easy read and an excellent primer for Freud's groundbreaking (at the turn of the 20th century) theories. This is a great introduction to the roots of "Freudian slips," dream analysis, the ego and id, concious and unconscious minds, repression, etc.
This is the first time I remember reading anything by Freud. I read this for my German Lit class this quarter as well. I am really liking it, but I'm very interested in psychoanalysis. I'll have to read more of this kind of material.
Freud proves yet again that he's not only the father of psychoanalysis, but a great teacher!

Easy to understand, and quite intriguing. A must-read for people who are fascinated by the human psyche even if the don't major in psychology.
This one was okay, you know, it's an interesting introduction to psychology. It was really short. I read it for my phylosophy class. I recommend it if you want to doscover this author, I advise you to start with this book.
Jason Williams
More of a critique of Western civilization than a tract on psychoanalysis, really. I mean, just read the parable on the last page if you wanna see where he's going with this.

Freud lo trovavo molto più interessante su i libri scolastici. Peccato

Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is regarded as one of the most influential - and controversial - minds of the 20th century.

Sigismund (later changed to Sigmund) Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic). His father was a merchant. The
