I normally enjoy the Death Note series- the plot seems to just get richer and richer as the series progresses, and the characters themselves are very interesting. However, I cannot say that I enjoyed this volume as much as I normally enjoy this series- this volume took me forever to read, and it dragged for the most part. Luckily, there were still some good parts, but those weren't enough to make me give it a higher rating. The Yotsuba group seemed to ruin this volume for me. :(. I will continue...more

Overall Rating: A++
Synopsis: A psychological/supernatural thriller created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student, Light Yagami, who discovers the notebook of a shinigami that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name while picturing his or her face. Light's goal is to create and lead a world cleansed of evil using the book, but where is the line between an honorable goal, and mass murder?

In another strong volume, [author Tsugumi Ohba:] takes the power out of Kira's hands and puts the unwitting protagonist on his own, and some intriguing others', pursuit.
While the new villains lack something in character, the value comes in both L and Light's character development as a true crime fighting team. The two work off each other, at times unknowingly, to develop a response to the new killers. Clever and entertaining with intelligent characters who actually behave intelligen...more

I think this book was okay but it was dry. like i wish they would get to the point throught because for the past few books they keep guessing to see who kira ia and i just want to see if they will ever find out that light was the first one to have the death note. It's like they get closer but then they just guess something completely different or second guess themselves a whole lot

I've been really enjoying this series, esp. the cat & mouse chase between Light and L. Unfortunately, the tone of the series changes with the events that precede this Volume and while still good, it hasn't had the same feel as the previous 4 volumes. Hopefully things get back on track soon and the battle of wits will continue.

Number five, yay! I swear, I went though these books so fast they are all morphed into one. Don't blame me, they are basically just pictures with captions, the only hard part is reading backwards at first, then you get the hang of it.

I watched the movies first and loved them. I haven't had the opportunity to watch the anime, but I'm reading the few volumes of the manga which are available to me and loving them as well on their own merit. I am glad that the movies and manga can differ so much and yet I enjoy both equally. It is rare that the love of something in one medium doesn't create a prejudice against any translations into different mediums.

Too much talking, for one- and I really didn't like the Yotsuba plot thread at all. I thought it distracted unnecessarily from the main characters and storyline through volume 4.

The status quo changing event at the end of volume four turned this book into wacky comedy land... At first I didn't like it. But a few chapters in I started to enjoy the jokes, and I remembered how much fun season five of Angel was (the device here is quite similar) and learned to love this new... buddy comedy is the only way I could describe it. Not to mention the crazy amount of events that took place out side of the reader's knowledge (I can't think of the literary term for off camera rig...more

death note is one series that never fails to remind me i'm not its target audience. i suspect i'd like it more if it wasn't so darned wordy, and perhaps if there were some white space every now and then for visual respite. then again, i have trouble with Obata's art style anyway (i had the same issues with Hikaru no Go, unsurprisingly, but i was more gripped by the story). that said, it's clever, and while Light is a perfect snot, L is fun.
