In three “immensely intelligent stories about the decay of passion” (The Sunday Herald Times [London]), Simone de Beauvoir draws us into the lives of three women, all past their first youth, all facing unexpected crises.

Enthralling as faction, suffused with de Beauvoir’s remarkable insights into women, The Woman Destroyed gives us a legendary writer at her best....more

I really liked the short stories in When Things of the Spirit Come First so I read these three stories. They are all from the perspectives of older women who are dealing with doubt and change. I couldn't get into the first 2, and, though I felt more for the woman in the third one, whose husband gradually cheats on her and then leaves her, it was frustrating to read because I really wanted her to find herself again in the midst of all the difficulty and she never does. Well, maybe at the end ther...more

This is kinda fascinating, so earthy and adult, not what I'm into - no monsters, murders or mal-bouffe. Which is to say, it's French, so the impeccable lives these characters aspire to is alien to me. But they at least have the decency to be incapable of the cool infidelity I associate stereotypically of the French and instead collapse in inward storms of ugly recrimination and tortured second guessing, thereby reinforcing my suspicion that I don't know enough about the French to have an opinion...more

Three stories, 'The Age of Discretion', 'Monologue' and 'The Woman Destroyed' make up this volume. 'The Age of Discretion' deals with ageing, loss, and a woman's refusal to accept her son's career choice as she stares down the tunnel of age. 'Monologue' was unreadable, a woman's rant through New Year's eve celebrations, she's in her forties, all alone, bitter, twisted. By far the most powerful piece was 'The Woman Destroyed'. Monique is forty-four, happy in her long marriage to Maurice. The nove...more

Modernariato.

Three stories about three different women, each undergoing her own life crisis brought about by age and role in society. De Beauvoir does a fantastic job (from my male perspective) of balancing honest dilemmas unique to women without hedging or overreaching. Nothing is simplified, though the women appear to me to be complete, complex and conflicted people--very real characters with very real problems and concerns, struggling to make sense of those problems and concerns.
I think de Beauvoir's fem...more

The second of the collection of three stories has grasped me: the titled, 'Monologue'. For me it paints how incredible the human being is. What the monologue represents here is a non hearing behind the scenes of how most of us acts and lives. It is the incredible ability to seize the right information at the right time to produce the right results (e.g. starting a conversation, reacting to something etc) It's like looking under a microscope at blood. The more magnification - the more we understa...more

La Femme Rompue its a three short stories book that tells the lives of three different women sharing the same crisis: getting old and the fear of being forgotten. De Beauvoir describes in a very rough way their daily lifes, their relationship with their partners and the solitude, loneliness that relationship now means.

I cannot say there is a happy ending somewhere in this book, I cannot say it is a book about love either, I think it is the mere reflection of a life decision this three women had...more

Dura, cruda,¿real?.

I belong to the type of person who loves characters above all. I want very human figures and I want to feel with them and I want them to surprise me and remind of of the fact that no formula is ever going to let me understand what an individual is. But this depth and this humanity cannot end up on the extreme of randomness. Simone de Beauvoir's third story in this book has had me thinking about the protagonist of the story for weeks. I felt so strong for her. I worried about her. I asked myself...more

Every story in this book grows on you eventually, each one in its own way. And not only do they grow upon you, but they also hit you. You get to drink and learn from them. In fact, I think some of the sentences written by the main character of "The Woman Destroyed", which is the last one of the stories, will remain with me (hopefully) forever. Apart from that, what I really enjoyed about the book is how Simone de Beauvoir proves you don't need to write an essay to talk out loud about feminism an...more

Jun 20, 2007 AlegraMarcel rated it 3 of 5 stars Recommends it for: anyone who likes wretchedly depressing books.
This book contains three short stories, each of them about a "Woman Destroyed." Two are utterly depressing, and one is incoherent. The middle story was stream of consciousness babbling by a mad woman character, and I couldn't even finish it. The first story was depressing, and compelling enough to finish. The third story, the title story, was very compelling, defintely a page-turner, but also depressing.

This third story, A Woman Destroyed," tells the tale of a woman whose children have left hom...more

This is a brilliant collection of Simone's short stories. Presumably it's autobiographical so her discussions with her husband are discussions with Satre, making it even more interesting to me. I really related to these stories which is really worrying, as both Simone and her husband were very unbalanced in my opinion, they overthought everything to a ridiculous degree.

I gave this book 5 stars, but I didn't enjoy it. If a book can move me the way this one moved me, I consider it a great book. However, I felt so bad for the characters in this set of 3 short stories (one in particular) that I finished it literally feeling angry! I was glad to finish it.

Her intricate psychological portrayals of women in different stages of their lives is layered and rich. She obviously has a deeper understanding of human nature. By the end of the 3rd part however, I was left feeling somewhat empty.

This is probably my most recommended book for any woman (or man who should learn a thing or two) to read. De Beauvoir's three short stories provide a glimpse into the lives of three women whose worlds are seriously altered by their relationships with men. Sometimes you may find yourself thinking "Get rid of him! He's awful!" followed by the realization that you have probably put up with something similar in a relationship.

I was in Europe and a total mess when I was reading this book. If you are...more
