Once you pick this book up you won't be able to put it down. It is a compelling read.
The story begins with a Prologue, and I felt like I have read this part before? As we travel on we get to almost the end of the book before the pieces fall into place.
The theme of this story is about forgiveness, whether it is forgiving oneself...as Bethany has been unable to do. Or as in Josh forgiving Bethany and then himself.

Josh was a Christian singer who married Bethany. the story started with Bethany preparing cookies, welcoming Josh home from his tour. however, after feeling a tremendous headache, she fainted in her kitchen only to be discovered later by their neighbor Alex. she was rushed to the hospital, where Josh arrived not long after. they were given terrible news regarding Beth's recent headaches. it was caused by her carotid artery. due to its danger, surgery was out of the question. it could only depend...more

I won this book in a contest on The Book Club Network advertising the new release of their Magazine! I didn't know what to expect going into this book but I was wonderfully and pleasantly impressed with this one.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the relationship of Josh and Beth. They deeply loved each other, but like us, had their moments of conflict. I thought it was a great first novel. It was well written and had an easy flow to the story that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. I loved how dedicated Alex was to Beth, and how Beth’s story tied in with Dr. Abram. In the debut novel, The Road to Mercy, by Kathy Harris, the readers are in for a journey that will outline what it really means to trust in God and learn to walk by faith, faith defined as believing in things we don't see. In each circumstance that the main characters are challenged with, Josh and Bethany Harrison, are tested in a wide variety of ways. The faith will come into question and will at times be doubted in some areas, and whole-heartily accepted in other ways.

The book begs the reader to ask their own question of where their life of faith stands. When hard times or unexpected circumstances come upon us, will we fall apart or fall on our knees. This book is perfect for these hard times we have all fallen upon lately, with job losses, health issues, financial strains, marriage problems, and more, I find if we don't have faith as our foundation, we will fall apart. We will look to fix things ourselves and at times will come up far too short. We must in fact, put our trust in God, because storms will come in each of our lives, our faith will be tested to points of breaking us sometimes, but it's how we weather our storms that makes us stronger and better prepared to deal with what happens next.

In The Road to Mercy, the reader gets to also know what true mercy is. Mercy is when we completely deserve punishment for something we have done wrong, but are instead given a clean slate, a new start, we get what we did not expect in return. I found myself wondering as I read along with Beth's health issue of being on the brink of death and learning she is pregnant, what decision I would make if I were in the same situation. While the well-meaning Dr. Ben Abrams tries to convince Beth and Josh that terminating her pregnancy is the best option, Beth and Josh choose to trust that God can handle the issue and will accept whatever consequences happen by their decision. Sounds like stuff that happens in real life all the time. Josh and Beth also find that dealing with the health issues and the pregnancy that it places them under tremendous personal stress of their own, each wondering if they are doing the right thing, which at times places them at odds with one another. Yet deep within the past are some secrets that may undermine their faith and completely destroy them. You'll have to read the book to see how this all plays out but trust me, it's well worth the search!

I received this book compliments of Pump Up Your Book Tours and Abingdon Press for my honest opinion and love that Kathy Harris chose this as a debut novel to write. In this tough times, we need books like this one to remind us of the cost of maintaining our faith. It may not be an easy road to walk but it will be one that pays off unexpectedly in ways we never imagined for our good in the end. For that reason I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. (less)

When I opened the package this book arrived in, I looked at the cover and thought ‘Oh, I do not think I will like this book’. The novel, The Road to Mercy, involves many different characters, scenes, time frames, and locations. Throughout the whole novel, it is evident that the author is pointing out the truth of God’s love, forgiveness, grace, and mercy no matter what our choices have been. It is a novel of hope, reminding the reader that the past doesn’t have to negatively affect the present or the future. If we allow the Lord to work in our hearts, He uses all things for our good and for the good of others whether we can see down the road or not.
Interwoven into the pages of the novel is a reminder of walking our lives by faith and that no matter what our career or personal life is like, we are human beings when all is stripped away. In being human, we all need Him and the friendship of others to help us throughout the journey that includes mountaintop experiences as well as when we are in the valley.
One part of the story is of a baby boy who alone lived through a plane crash that took the lives of his other family members. His parents were Messianic believers and though his grandfather tried to deter Isaac from finding out as he grew up, he still somehow was learning the truth of his parents’ beliefs. Who would be so bold as to share with him the faith his parents had and will Isaac come to know the Messiah as well?
Then we have a young married couple who have kept their past from each other because of the shame and fear it stirred within their hearts. Bethany had been brought up in a Christian home, but when she went away to college, she made a choice. The choice she made wasn’t the wise one she thought it was at the time. Now, many years later, the scars she still bears are weighing her down and binding her in fear. Her life was brought almost to an end without the help of a good doctor who thought he knew how to direct her course so she would recover. However, the problem was Bethany was pregnant. The pain in her head, the risk to her and the unborn baby were going to bring out skeletons from a past. She had hoped they would never see the light of day.
Josh lost his mother when he was young. Then, his father’s decisions afterward scarred the young man. Josh thought he could handle the health crisis with Bethany, a blossoming music career, the financial turns in the ministry, and other people’s choices that came to light. The choices made by others caused Josh to be embarrassed, not so much for the ministry as the thought of what it did to the witness for Christ. What is Josh going to do when he is feeling like all hell is breaking lose and coming to realize he can control none of it?
I read this novel in a matter of hours. It draws from reader awareness that it can be true stories in today’s headlines even though the book is strictly fictional. Perhaps it will encourage the faith of the reader and light the path to the truth of Jesus Christ being the only answer when all is said and done. I hope you read this fictional story and perhaps share it with someone who might need a glimpse of mercy and hope.
My rating is 4 ½ stars.

Excellent!
Christian musician Josh is on the road with his band when his wife collapses with a life-threatening condition. The doctor advises her to end her pregnancy.

Author Kathy Harris did an excellent job keeping it real. The emotions hit home - from Bethany's struggle to accept God's forgiveness to Josh's "what next?" when problems hit, to the couple's conflicts. I am reviewing this book as part of the PUMP UP YOUR BOOK promotional book tour. I am certainly glad to have found another new author and with a fabulous debut novel. Harris gripped me in her Prologue and had me wondering almost to the end how that scene connected to the rest of the novel.

As a Christian, I found the Scriptures and numerous prayers in the book to be integral to the telling of the story. The main characters in the story surround their life and their choices with their faith in God. So, it is natural to have God be a main character as well. Even those who aren't convinced in their faith, this book can show them that Prayer, Faith, and Hope can heal those past sins. Beth has a past that she is sure will destroy her life, her marriage and her faith and the way she reconciles her past sins with her current life is remarkable.

With Josh's tour and complications, Beth's pregnancy and health issues and Beth's friend and caregiver's budding romance on top of the intriguing Prologue, this book will have you turning the pages quickly. With its short chapters, you can easily "read just one more".

The book is full of "life-changing" and "thought-provoking" messages that will make you pause and reflect on your own choices. One of my favorites came from Page 237, "Praise God and you will eventually understand how many ways he should be fully praised."

I think the story was realistic in the way that when life hands us challenges and we continue to be confronted with mishaps and frustrations, we want to give up. It is natural for us to question God and His motives and whether He is leading us down the right path. The characters in this story frequently questioned Him and considered choices that could have been detrimental. Not everything in life, or in this book was tied up in a pretty bow, but the message stood out....If God leads you to it, He will lead you through it.

If your church group, mom's group or book club is looking for a book with rich discussion, this would be an excellent option. Possible topics could include medical choices, trust, abortion, grief, friendships, faith, and marriage. The power of prayer is evident in this story and will remind you that it needs to be part of our everyday life as well . (less)

Road to Mercy took me a while to pick up. Every time I’d think about starting this book, it seemed like such a heavy topic so I would lay it aside. I prefer historical romance, as well. But when I finally decided to read it, I was so glad! The heroine, Bethany, suffers from a rupture of her carotid artery. Josh is a young up-and-coming Christian music artist, and Beth is his wife who misses him while he is on tour. When she is surprised with a serious illness, their faith is tested in many ways. I liked the Christian angle of this story very much, but the plot seemed a little hokey at times.

First off, let me say contemporary fiction is not one of my favorite genres. However, this book sounded intriguing to me, so I decided to read it.

The Road to Mercy was good not great. While reading the book it kept my attention, but when I had to set it down I didn't want to rush back to it. The story was at times predictable and the ending left much to be desired, but overall, I think it is a nice debut novel.

I loved the Nashville setting, the glimpses into the music business, and the beginning of the book had me wondering what in the world was this about? Kathy Harris kept me reading wondering how all of the dilemmas that the characters wrestled with would resolve. The young couple faced spiritual, mental and physical battles with all the faith they could muster. What I loved most was the surprise ending! It gave me chills.

Kathy did a FABULOUS job in this debut novel. It was great to get an "inside" look at the music industry in Nashville. This was a story about forgiveness and mercy, but I think the BIG takeaway for me was the importance of having a faith grounded in Jesus, even before tragedy hits.

Overall, just a fabulously written novel and I'll definitely be looking for more from Kathy Harris!!!!
