I am 46 years old. Happily married for 17 years. I and my beautiful wife have been blessed with a daughter who is now 16 years old. Three years ago, I bought 501 Must Read Books and thought of reading the books included in it. My brother came across 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die and suggested that we read all those books as well. I agreed. In the course of my research about one of the books we read, I came across Goodreads. Then in it, I saw The Filipino Group. I felt happy that Filipi More...

This is a classic Italian novel that one has to read! "Sostiene Pereira" is a wonderful psychological character study set in a time of political uncertainty--Fascist Portugal in the summer of 1938, with the Spanish Civil War raging next door. Dr Pereira is the middle-aged, overweight editor of the culture page of a Lisbon evening paper; widowed and childless, he talks to a photo of his wife and dines on omelettes aux fines herbes. He has not been following political events and his tra More...

Pereira is a middle aged widower who is in-charge of the cultural page of an evening newspaper, Lisboa. He hires an assistant, Monterio Rossi, for writing obituaries of famous writers who are still alive. So that he has 'ready obituaries' to publish if any of these writers happened to die. Pereira life consists of a fat body, a portrait of his dead wife and a caretaker(who he believes to be a spy). Pereira predominantly lives in the memories of his past life. He is little interested in the poli More...

Pereira’s final declaration of conscientization by the end of Antonio Tabucchi’s novel is one of the best conclusions I read in recent months. After years of apolitical indifference to the socio-political realities of his times, Pereira pens a parting piece that seethes with righteous anger over the death of his companion Monteiro Rossi at the hands of fascist thugs. His last act before the open ended finale is descriptive of how much the novel’s protagonist has changed from a fence-sitting cult More...

I found this book strangely irresistible. The way that it is written is for me kind of novelty. I have never read a book where the narration is neither in third person nor in first person before. When we read it we have an impression that the main character is being interrogated , but we have no proof of that. I really liked that because even though we are concentrated on numerous things that are happening in the plot some part of our consciousness is still thinking about the meaning of constant More...

I loved this novel. It was very special!
Rossi is More...

L More...

Delightfully declared! Antonio Tabucchi's Pereira Declares is an amusing story about an aged man, Dr. Pereira, who works as a journalist for the Lisboa newspaper in Portugal during the time of the Spanish Civil War. He is in charge of the culture section - mostly a one-man show - which keeps him satisfied, busy, and out of harm's reach - at least momentarily.

Tabucchi's character sketch of the protagonist is well-balanced and nuanced. Dr. Pereira is a rather simple man, a shade sup More...

The year is 1938. Spain is under a civil war. And, in Portugal, Dr. Pereira is now taking care of the culture page of the Lisboa, an independent newspaper. He is a man with no interest in politics, but then, he meets, Monteiro Rossi and his girlfriend, Marta, and, without knowing the reason, he finds himself dragged into the trouble of the young couple. Because, under the gag of the regime, daring to think differently can have serious consequences.
Beautifully written and with a very strong More...

Probably the most intriguing thing about this novel is the way the story is told. Rather than simply using a first person narrator the entire book, Dr Pereira's testimony, is `read' to us which is why, every now and then the reader inserts "Pereira maintains" into his reading. At its core it's a political thriller set in Lisbon in 1938 but really what it is is a story of a man's awakening to what's going on around him. In many respects Pereira is a tubby Winston Smith, a newspaper edit More...

First-rate literature needs to succeed on more than one level. Regardless of the issues or themes a book may explore, they are irrelevant if the author doesn't draw in and keep the reader with the story, characters or writing. Italian author Antonia Tabucchi's Pereira Maintains, set in Portugal in the summer of 1938, succeeds on a variety of levels.

Tabucchi addresses some serious issues, including the age-old question of whether we should be governed by reason or emotion and where More...

This is an interesting short novel with a quirky literary conceit - you'll either love it or hate it (the conceit I mean). I loved it. The novel is written as if the protagonist has been arrested for his activities and is being questioned (interrogated or interviewed) by some sinister note taker. It's about a man struggling to come to terms with his grief and battling with his deeper convictions in a climate of repression (pre-war Portugal). Definitely worth a read.

I recieved a copy of this book through Firstreads. It took me quite a long time to get through it, as there wasn't really anything compelling me to keep reading. The beginning is very strong, and the book showed a lot of promise at the start, but definitely weakened as it went on. Pereira is an odd character. He lives on omelettes and lemonade, and works as a journalist for an evening paper. He's still grieving for his late wife, and talks to her picture on a regular basis. He's very gullible, a More...

This is the gem that every book should be yet so few are: concise yet poetic; understated yet powerful. Set in Lisbon in 1938, when the civil war was raging in Spain and the Portuguese were subjected to Salazar's authoritarian regime, the story is centered around a doddering old Portuguese journalist who gradually becomes aware of profound issues in life which he can no longer ignore. I read the book in Italian but I recommend it in any language!

More...
