I grew up in India, and learned the story told in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, India's great epics, literally back in first and second grade. The Ramayana, in particular, is the basis for Diwali, one of my favorite Hindu festivals.
I already have an excellent copy of the Mahabharata (although one that I'm sure is utterly out of print) but I never got a full length version of the entire Ramayana while we lived there. So I recently treated myself to one.

Great book. And this translation is the one I recommend. Hinduism has its own Iliad and The Odyssey. The Iliad of India is the Mahabharata, a story of a war between two branches of one family. The Odyssey of India is this, The Ramayana, about the good Prince Rama, his brother Lakshmana, and his wife Sita. This book is quite dense, with tons of great scenes and adventures, climaxing with Rama bringing a vast animal army to Lanka (Sri Lanka) to rescue Sita from the evil, ten-headed rakshasa demon ...more

You're better off reading a classical retelling than this cheesy modern retelling. Unfortunately, the best translation that I ever read of this was from like 1910 or somewhere around there. Check out your local university library. Can't believe I spent money on this thing. Still, it's hard to screw up the material too bad, so if you need the gist of the Ramayana because you've never read it before, give this a chance. If you already know the story, then you don't need this watered down version.

i read this book while i was pregnant with maitri. growing up i heard stories from the ramayana, not mother goose. it was so great to read this book; it is so magical and surreal and helped me understand the indian imagination and my own.
many other translations and retellings are awful and difficult to read through but this was like butter. i can't wait to share it with maitri when she is older.

I'd recommend this version for anyone interested in the mythological value of the Ramayana, in a way that won't put them to sleep like, say, how the strict retelling of Beowulf would.
It's actually fun, but it makes you want to adapt it.

Holy cow!!!!! I finished the book, flipped it over and started it again!! It's told with flourish and brings a true sense of character to the story. It is an Indian epic based on the Hindu gods. Truly amazing.

It must very interesting to see how Ramayana "retell" in modern way;) Many years ago, I've read many Ramayana versions, mostly in comics, but I'd been never bored nor tired reading it again, and again:)

Even if you don't 'believe' in it, this tale is a great one full of adventure and thought-provoking scenes. Besides, I was named after one of the princesses, so I better give it 5 stars.

I have read the more traditional style verse translations, but this version was really good.

A delightful, comprehensive and fully poetic translation of the Ramayana.

the modern retelling version seems to be easiest to read and follow.
