It's taken me absolutely ages to get into this book but once I started in earnest I couldn't put it down. The Vietnamese war spilled over into Laos and affected the lives of the ordinary villagers; the people that we hear so little about cos they don't really count. The book is written entirely from the perspective of one American doctor who was trying to move a mountain with a teaspoon in terms of providing reliable healthcare; officially for the Laos population, unofficially for US servicemen...more
Got this for free at the Kyoto English-language used bookstore. You know that volunteerism is one of my guilty pleasures so here I am reading it. It's good too! Learning about the multilingual and multicultural past, present, and future of Laos is really interesting to me!
