A graphic novel that will appeal to teens who enjoy the genre in general as well as those who enjoy mysteries or a setting similar to television series like "Lost", which has a similar premise.

The main character, Kasumi, is a little irritating because of her general helplessness throughout the volume. She is rescued numerous times by one of the other characters, and she spends most of her time pining over her lost twin sister. However, when on the verge of death, it is her love for her twin and...more

However, Kasumi's twin sister was not selected, and she dreams of her as she is frozen. When Kasumi awakens, the center is filled with thick vines of thorns, and strange, dinosaur-like creatures are roaming the facility. When one creature attacks and kills several of the others who have just wok...more

Review: Kasumi was infected with a virus called Medusa, an uncurable virus that turns its victim to stone. She is sent to be cryogenically frozen until a cure is found. Then she wakes up with thorns growing all around, and dinosaur-like creatures everywhere. The majority of the people waking up get eaten. She and a small group of survivors must work out what it takes to live in this new dangerous world. Kasumi is also looking for something else; her twin Shizuku who wasn't chosen to be frozen an...more

Synopsis: The series is a science fiction and mystery manga by Yuji Iwahara. The story follows Kasumi after she awakens from being cryogenically frozen. She, and 159 others were frozen after contracting the Medusa virus, which causes your cells to solidify into a clay-like substance. The result is similar to being turned to stone, hence the name. Kasumi and her twin sister contracted the virus, but only Kasumi is frozen. The 160 survivors awaken from their suspended animation i...more

King of Thorn reminds me a bit of the TV show Lost. Both involve a whole bunch of strangers, stranded together in a hostile landscape that may or may not be supernatural, but it's definitely freaky. And there's even a mysterious hatch! ^_^

Iwahara's art style is a little different from what I'm used to. He uses a lot of hatching, and not so many screen tones. (I have to admit that I do usually read shoujo titles.)

It's intriguing enough that I picked up the second volume.

A very interesting story of a girl who has a disease called medusa. It's a future set book where this disease turns people to stone after a set time. Scientist lock people that have such disease in special chambers to find a cure for them later when somthing horrible happens. I don't want to give to much away. This is a great series novel. There is alot of mystery surrounding each of the characters that is greatly hidden and released at key points. Definately a good book.
Bloody Bones
I saw the movie before reading the first book of the series. And damned it was gorgeous (but the 3-D scenes sucks) and above all, the story was mind-blowing but confusing.
So I wanted to read this manga very badly.
And even though it was different from the movie I was completely hook until the end. The plot is action-packed, it's mysterious and intriguing...
Well, I can't wait to read the next volume !

Another unique story. I had absolutely no idea what this storyline was about when I picked up the manga. I did catch a glimpse of the anime at the 2012 Kumoricon, though. But when I started reading the manga, I was instantly hooked. I couldn't put it down. I just had to keep reading. I'm looking forward to reading volume 2 now. I do recommend it. Adults only... no kids. There is a couple of gory scenes... people being ripped in half, eaten, sliced by thorns, etc. It was really good, though.

"Imagina por un momento un futuro en el que una terrible enfermedad que provoca el endurecimiento de las células del cuerpo humano, llamada popularmente “medusa”, afecta a casi todo el planeta. Imagina que solo 160 personas son las elegidas para ser criogenizadas en un laboratorio, en espera de encontrar una cura futura para esa enfermedad. Imagina que, de repente, esas personas son despertadas bruscamente y sin saber por qué. Tampoco saben cuánto tiempo han pasado durmiendo ni si ya existe la c...more

This is the first manga I've read (with the exception of the one that my husband and brother-in-law wrote for a high school project), and I must say, I'm just confused. This book was done in the traditional manga, where it's read "backwards." It took quite a lot for me to get used to it. The pictures were really crowded and sometimes I had no idea what was going on. Plus, the main character was super whiny. I should probably give the manga genre another chance, but it's not going to happen for a...more

Yuji Iwahara's work surprised me. At first I thought this book would be like other comic mangas but as I read the first page I was soon intrigued by this book. I finished it in 2 hours and I was craving for more. I couldnt believe how good this book was. The sense of mystery is amzing. I truely like this book.

A cross between "Sleeping Beauty" and "Lost," King of Thorns follows a group of strangers who enter suspended animation to await a cure to a plague which turns its victims to stone. When they awaken, the medical center has been overrun by vines and strange monsters, with no clues as to how long they have been asleep of what has happened to the rest of the world.

The typically "diverse" group of survivors includes rather stereotypical members -- the rich, white politician; the mysterious, aloof t...more

My favorite manga in existence. The style, proper use of screen tone, pen work, everything is just absolutely amazing, and I read this after my weaboo phase!
Best manga for Science fiction that's recent in my opinion. :)
Defnitely recommend it.

I LOVE this series. Its such a good mix of suspense, action and just a little bit of romance!!! I only read it for the first time about six months ago but I've already read it twice more since! So good, I wish there were more like this!!!!

Typical thrasher SF storyline where a large group of survivors (after waking up in a catastrophic future with mutant monsters) quickly becomes few. Recommend to fans of horror and science fiction who like action and gore.

I really liked the overall idea of the story. It was well-complemented by the artwork. There's a truly psychological interest along with the sci-fi/fantasy element that brings everything to a more colorful level.

It's a very interesting start to the series, and it's interesting to see the "castaways" dynamic here, in the context of some of the panels on this topic I saw at OryCon.

This is a great first volume, I can't wait to read the rest of the series. A strong start that mixes well-developed characters, action, and plot.

Awesome art, an interesting (if clichéd) premise and some genuinely tense moments make for a great manga! Partly reminds me of 'Eden: It's An Endless World' seeing as the Medusa virus here is very similar to the Prohibitor Virus in Eden.

This is not only a strong premise, with a great survival story appeal, the art is great, and the mystery and suspense is really kept going. This first volume opens strongly, and as the series continues Iwahara keeps adding bits of information just frequently enough to keep the reader on their toes.
