Because of the name of the book i spent the first 3rd of the book suspicious of all the characters, waiting to see who would be the betrayer. Who it turned out to be wasn't that surprising but the level of deception & what actual occurred was.
I liked the relationships between the the lead characters & the love story was nice & easy going.

So i thought this book was an great concept. The Vedeine as a race are different & interesting. There abilities & problems were unusual.

I found the plot to be very interesting, and the characters very likable. My biggest issue with this entire book revolves around BIG editing issues: run on sentences, sentence fragments, jumbled ideas, POV changing in the middle of a paragraph, and general inconsistencies. Wow! I must say I really enjoyed this story, at first I found it very similar to some of the vampire novels out there. The story definitely picks up once Amelia moves to Portland, the characters are amazing and wonderful and the imagery I get of their abilities is almost believable and I find myself wondering if I concentrated that hard, could I make fire come out of my hand? The tested answer to that, sadly is no. No fire! :(

The name of the book lets you know that someone is lying, its takes the reader a long time to fully figure out who your suppose to be mad at. I had my suspicions, however I was pleasantly shocked a few times and the turn of events. It’s nice to have surprises and twist that the reader doesn’t expect, I find this doesn’t happen very often anymore.

As much as I loved this story and have already started the sequel (which is wonderful and I would say slightly better than its predecessor) I have a few things that irked me a bit with this story. I won’t go for too long about them as I know this is her first novel and the sequel has improved, however there is a part of the story that is dedicated to a romantic involvement with Robert, as I can understand this to be part of the story development, there were too many paragraphs of them kissing and the same feelings being repeated OVER and OVER again. I felt like after the 7th time I knew they were meant to be together. As I have mentioned previously, in the sequel (read the next review to see my thoughts) the romantic aspects of the book are not as repetitive and seemed to move the story along nicely instead of feeling like they were there as blank fillers.

Alright, after this little rant. I do suggest if you like YA novels to give this one a go, it is nicely priced on Amazon, the sequel is also already out. The author plans on writing 4 books in this series with the next coming out around September and the 4th around January 2013. So this won’t be too long a wait to finish the series. :)

Ameila is a young woman who has never quite felt like she belongs. She has an unfortunate accident and as she is about to die is "saved" by demon and must now find her way in the world of the Vedeines. She finds she has powers and must move away to join a group of Vedeines so she can learn to use her gifts and survive in the world. I must say I really enjoyed this book. I have a hard time with the star system, as in this case I am vacillating between a 4 and 5 feeling more in the 4.5 range, thus my 5 star rating. It was a complicated read and at times seemed long, but I was hooked and had to find out what was going to happen next, and the complexity of the story pretty well justifies the length. I certainly could not think of anything I would have had left out. I did not always like Amelia, but as she matured and came more into herself she became the type of female protagonist that I enjoy and look forward to her continuing to mature. There is definitely action and tears and an ending that will not leave you emotionless; one way or another you will have an opinion. I feel Deception was very well written and as book two is already out, I am glad I do not have to wait to continue the journey. I recommend this book to anyone wanting a fresh new look at those that were not allowed to enter and enjoy a complex story that will definitely get you emotionally involved.

I have to admit that there were a couple of points I nearly gave up on Deception :-( . . .initially I found the book a steady but pleasant love story, combined with a large amount of Vedeine back story. However, I reached a point where I couldn't put the book down, and felt that Ashley Strachan had lulled me into a false sense of security, as suddenly I was reading a suspense thriller. . . . . .And I was SO not prepared for the ending!!!!!!!!!!

Okay! I liked this book. I did. Sometimes I am unsure of how a book is going to be when it is by a new author that I have never heard of. But…looking past itty bitty editing issues, I’d have to say that I am glad that I was introduced to Ashley Strachan. The story was still told regardless of a missed word or spacing issue; most people wouldn’t even notice those mistakes. Anyways…I think that the romance in this book is more Young Adult and some of the descriptions of violence are Adult. Overall, I’d put this book in the Paranormal Romance genre, with some action and drama thrown in. I think that I would rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. In my way of rating, this means that I liked the book and would read more by this author. I can’t wait to read and review the second installment of this series, “Origins.”

Some people may consider what comes next as a spoiler. But I do not tell the ending to this story at all. Most of what I said is a basic summary, but I know how some people seriously do not want any details at all about a book because everything has to be a total surprise. Just wanted to let you know ;)

So, the majority of this book was based on the romantic relationship between main characters Amelia and Robert. Readers were instantly aware of the feelings these two had for each other. When Vedeine’s fall in love, they fall in love forever. It’s the way of their race. Upon first touch, it was obvious they were soul mates though Amelia didn’t know it until a short while later. Amelia is a new Vedeine and knows next to nothing about her new life, so she didn’t know what the electrical charge meant that was coursing through her body every time she and Robert touched. She lived her life in secret with her family in Canada before moving to Oregon to join Christopher’s Collective. Christopher is the head of Vedeines in North America. Before joining the Collective, the only other Vedeine Amelia knew was the woman who created her. The woman never taught her anything about her new life as a Vedeine. She never even told Amelia her name. This woman was the one who sent her to join the Collective, and warned her of the people there, especially Christopher. Upon arrival in Portland, Oregon, Amelia began to learn everything there was to know. She learned the history of Vedeines, and also her own physical and mental strengths. But, she also built relationships with the people around her and never once had a bad feeling about Christopher; instead, she has only felt friendship and fatherly love. Amelia can’t help but wonder what the woman was talking about and if she should really trust her. Shortly after settling down in her new home, Amelia gets sick. Problem is…Vedeines don’t get sick. What’s going on with Amelia? Why is she sick? Did somebody make her this way? Is there even anybody who she can trust? Join Amelia in her quest for the truth. Find out the answers in Ashley Strachan’s “Deception.”

Altogether, I enjoyed reading this book. I didn’t have to push myself through it like I sometimes do with a new author’s work. I started reading and all of a sudden I was more than half way through it. But that’s when I realized that not too much has happened yet. The story definitely picks up when Amelia moves to Portland, which of course is to be expected. Portland is where the Collective is and where Amelia is introduced to her life as a Vedeine. I liked that this story was told by Amelia’s point of view. But what I really liked was the few points in the story that we were able to see Robert and Christopher’s first person thoughts. I would recommend “Deception” by Ashley Strachan to any readers who are interested in a young and fresh romance or some really intense imagery. Everyone go and find out who Ashley Strachan is and go read her books in the “Vedeine Saga.”

Overall: I began reading this book in early June and it took me until late August to finish. I was bitterly reminded of why I didn’t like Twilight – not enough action and too much fluff. This story could of easily been 4 stars if it were 100 pages shorter. There’s just too much that happens that doesn’t impact the story. Actually, strike that. There’s almost no action. There’s one scene halfway into the book where Amelia enters the hospital that I found was amazing and intense – and then it slow...more Overall: I began reading this book in early June and it took me until late August to finish. So what is the fluff – well, I don’t need 3-4 pages of mushy “I love you” “I miss you” back and forth between Robert and Amelia every freaking chapter. I get it. They like each other.

Characters: The author does create a decent cast of characters but there’s one problem – they get along fabulously. There’s absolutely zero drama and rivalry between the “good guys” and the “bad guy” doesn’t have nearly enough screen time to make up for this. Amelia and Robert fall in love instantly and I secretly was hoping that Christopher would form a love triangle – but no, Amelia thinks of him as an “elderly” friend. No possibility for romance between them. I just don’t get how you can have so many people living in one house without anyone getting upset. I get irritated at my husband if we spend too much time together and we’re the best of friends most days.

Plot: Amelia nearly died and some woman saved her, so she becomes this person with super-human abilities (way too many to list). When she turns 18 she goes to live with other people like her. She finds out that her transformation wasn’t done properly because that woman had a grudge on Christopher, which I’m not sure how saving Amelia to let her die later is good revenge for someone who hadn’t even met Christopher yet.

Ending: The ending was probably the best part of the book. There was more action in the last 20% than the first 80%. There were a few discrepancies that bothered me. One thing is that Amelia resembles another character, but when she under disguise, she is mistaken for this other character. Her “disguise” makes her look less like this other person so I don’t get it. Basically this is a two star book instead of one star because there is an audience for this type of book. You have to like purple unicorns and sparkly vampires, but there is an audience. It is just not me.(less)

I just finished reading the book, and all I have to say is I want the next one…now! The storyline is nothing liked I imaged it would be. Just looking at the title, Deception, I knew this was a story about someone not being who they said they were. I was constantly questioning who the bad guy was and who the good one was. You might be surprised to see who it was!
