It's an excellent idea, analysing all of Dylan's early songs and locating the sources, but what grindingly dull work Todd Harvey makes of it all. Each of the 70 analyses follow the same pattern, so each contains a paragraph which says something like "I have heard 11 versions of Don't Think Twice, It's All Right : the [10/?/62a] 2nd Gaslight performance, the [11/14/62] Freewheelin' session VI recording, subsequently released on that lp, the [3/?/63a] Witmark session V recording..." etc etc throug...more

A discovery. I've been retracing paths in this book for a week, and the scholarship's solid sense authenticates itself. Todd Harvey wants to establish texts, which -- the more you know about folk songs, the literary process they participate in, the more vexingly crucial this work becomes. Harvey's musicology and compositional genetics is rock solid. It's just not a book for the layperson, so don't expect it to be. It ought to straighten out mis-prisions among the non-specialist interpreters, tho...more
