A man turns up to see Maigret and says his wife is trying to kill him. Later that day the man’s wife turns up and tells Maigret about her concerns about her husband’s state of mind. No crime has been committed and no complaints are made. Officially there is no case, but Maigret has ‘scruples’ (as we know from the title) and he suspects there will be a crime...and he suspects one of the couple is mentally unstable. An intriguing premise or a slightly desperate attempt to liven up the format? It m ...more

Simenon, Georges. MAIGRET HAS SCRUPLES. (1958; U.S. – 1988). ****. On a slow Monday morning, Maigret’s receptionist shows in a middle-aged man who specifically wanted to see him. When asked what the problem was, he told Maigret that he believed that his wife planned to kill him. To back this up, he showed an envelope of Zinc Phosphide that he had found in the pantry. He knew that this was a potent poison because he had done research at the library. Maigret is temporarily called away for a few mi ...more

A famme fatale ...more

This is an unusual story - instead of the usual discovery of a crime, Maigret starts to investigate a crime which is about to happen. Maigret's office is going through a slow period - 'calme plat'. Paris is grey and rainy, Simenon evokes a feeling of general discontent and rumination. Into this comes Xavier Marton. He says that his wife is going to kill him. Then an unsolicited visit from Mme Marton, who denies having any intention of killing her husband. Maigret has no jurisdiction over crimes ...more

When I rate a book it is always a combination of how good a book I think it is, and how much I enjoyed reading it. This book is better than a "3" but I didn't enjoy it enough to give it a "4". That's probably because I didn't feel the same about the characters as Maigret did, and I found it a little depressing. But then what's happy about murder?

V českém vydáni z roku 1971 a v překladu Evy Outratové (to ještě vycházely knihy bez chyb a voněly tiskem). A kdo si ještě pamatuje v roli komisaře Jeana Gabina, nemůže tyhle knížky nečíst bez nostalgie.

In this book we have some personal titbits about Maigret's relationship with his wife. His wife is a source of wonder for me. Up to now I have never seen her get angry or grumpy so unlike Simenon's other characters she does not sound true as yet. In this book Maigret investigates a crime that is still to happen and we see it unfold before our eyes.

Another short book to make up for listing the Tolkein trilogy as one book. I actually picked it up because it would fit in my pocket, so was handy while I waited at the eye doctor.

Unusual for a mystery, but usual for Simenon exploring people's psyche.

After 40 years, I have re-read Maigret.
This was a good one, not that it was great literature, but it is classic Maigret.
This was a good vacation book.

Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.

He is best known, however, for his 75
