I enjoy reading novellas because they are a nice break from long and involved books. I usually will read a couple in between novels just to give myself a little break and a quick HEA. As I have often mentioned, the downfall is that I am often left wanting more. I was pleasantly pleased that I was not left wanting in this case. Heat Rises is a great short story. This was so sexy and Hot I couldn't put it down till I reached the end, and then I was wishing for more. This is about two people who met a few years before during college. Not because he isn't attracted to her, but because she is drunker than Cooter Brown and he doesn't want to take advantage of her.

Cut to six years later. Ethan and Laura are both stranded in a small town during a snow storm. Ethan knows of a cottage where they can hole up until help arrives.

And we're off to the races.

"I want you naked," she said, hardly recognizing her own voice. That was the sound of a woman with demands. A woman who didn't give a fig for anything but her own needs. She didn't have to. She could enjoy this man any way she wanted and then never have to face him again. She could excite him any time she wanted and enjoy the consequences.

That, in a nutshell, is the plot. Laura and Ethan make a deal: she will do to him all the things she promised while in her margarita haze, and he will accept. Then, when the snow plow shows up, it's over.

They proceed to work out several fantasies, including the co-ed and the plumber, some oral fixations and one involving pancake syrup. Alice Gaines writes one hot scene after another, all the while offering us some insights into these two people. We like them! And what's also nice is having the man be the one who begs for the relationship, with the woman wanting only the sexy times.

This is a quick, hot read. There is even a little spanky panky going on, so suck on THAT, Christian Grey.

I loved HEAT RISES by Alice Gaines. It's every woman's fantasy to have a second chance with the one man who claimed her daydreams, her fantasies, and her heart. HEAT RISES is a fast reading novella filled with steamy sex, fantasy indulgence, and two people finding their hearts were always meant for each other as well as their bodies. I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to indulge in the reading of this, the first in the Cabin Fever series. I will certainly be eager to read the next, and the next, and so on.

HEAT RISES: a Cabin Fever Novella by Alice Gaines is explosively sexy, endearing, and will surely have every woman, and any man brave enough to read it, reminiscing about the one who got away - if there is one. I highly recommend HEAT RISES to anyone looking for a few hours of delicious escape and possibly some intriguing ideas to share with a loved one. *wink*

Stranded in an area with no hotels she needed to rely on the kindness of a family in the area to take her in. She was just talking to the store owner about trying to find something when HE walked in. She hadn't seen him in years, not since college and had hoped never to see him again. She'd admired him from a distance in college and on one fateful night, after she'd drunk a little Tequila for courage, she propositioned him in a way most men wouldn't have turned down, but HE did. She had avoided him ever since.

Ethan Gould had never forgotten Laura or the proposition she'd made. She'd always been the shy and quiet type and her proposition of an 'anything goes' night of passion seemed out of character and had left him stunned and wanting all those years ago. It had been obvious to him she'd had a little too much to drink and so he had turned down her offer. He'd always considered her the one that got away. When he came across her that night stranded and in need of a place to stay he wasn't going to let her get away twice.

I got this book from Avon, and I don't normally read erotic romances although I have a few authors whose books are labeled erotic that border on the cusp of being a regular romances that I do read. Basically, the pain/pleasure thing just doesn't work for me and this has a touch of that in it. I have read a couple that do delve into slightly more erotic territory that are part of a series, and you'll usually notice a slightly lower rating on those books. I downloaded this one without even noticing that the publisher stated it was erotic. It was the first erotic romance they'd ever requested I read and so it didn't even dawn on me that it might be one. So while this wasn't exactly my cup of tea romance wise, I did think it was a cute story.

So what did I like? I liked that the two had some history before they got stranded and got all hot and bothered with each other. It makes the romance somehow more believable when they have some inkling who the other is, although I can see how a two strangers meeting and falling for each other would also hold some appeal. I also enjoyed how Laura seemed to take control of the situation and Ethan just tried to go along with whatever she proposed. I wasn't expecting that because he was the one who propositioned her this time.

I'm kind of on the fence as to how I feel about Laura. In some ways she's a strong and smart woman, but she's a bit wishy washy as well. It's obvious that she's always wanted the kind of relationship she and Ethan have, but basically denounces it at the same time when she declares it to be a one time deal. I found it interesting that Ethan is the only man Laura's ever felt comfortable enough to make this type of proposal to. Perhaps she felt so humiliated by his prior refusal that she'd never dared to ask anyone else? One thing I would have liked to have seen is some sort of inner struggle that was resolved by Laura alone about her wants or wishes. I think that would have added a little more depth to the story.

Overall I gave this one a 2 1/2 out of 5 roses. I felt the author did a good job of packing a lot into this short story, and making sure it didn't have that rushed feel to it that many novellas do. There were some things I liked and other things I didn't. Keep in mind erotic romances aren't really my type of romance and the rating would have probably have been 3 1/2 if they were. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one lives up to the erotic label with a SHOWER rating--a cold shower is necessary (need I say more?). Some books should come with a warning - make sure your significant other is handy or your shower is in working order. lol(less)

On her way to a job interview, Laura finds herself stranded in a snowstorm. Things look desperate until a handsome guy in an SUV offers to put her up in a forest cabin he's borrowing from a friend. She accepts and no sooner do they get to the cabin than the blizzard snows them in for several days. How they spend those days is a foregone conclusion.

What's different and intriguing about this erotic novella is that Laura and Ethan have a history. Back in college she was a shy, mousy nerd with a serious crush on the hottest guy around. At the end-of-semester dance she gets blind drunk, corners Ethan, stuns him with a long list of all the kinky things she'd like to do to him, then reaches for his trousers. Ethan is repulsed and Laura is humiliated.

Back in the snowbound cabin, after an awkward start, Laura decides to confront the two-ton elephant in the room by apologising for her drunken outburst at the college dance. Ethan is surprisingly understanding, the tension melts, and the sexual heat rises. Laura suggests that, since the two of them are unlikely to meet again once the snowploughs make it through, this would be a great opportunity to enjoy some of the kinky sex she dreamed of in college. Ethan agrees.

I'm constantly impressed by Ms Gaines' skill in maintaining tension and reader interest through a series of sexual encounters. She avoids the genre pitfalls of repetition and cliched dialogue. Laura and Ethan's final coupling is just as fresh and exciting as the first.

There was just one part of the story that left me a little disappointed. Throughout their cabin sex-fest, Laura makes clear to Ethan that the only reason she's able to let herself go is the knowledge that it's a one-time fling.

Ethan accepts this, but still finds himself falling for Laura. I was hoping the intimate sex would have mellowed Laura too, but when the snowplough arrives she brushes off Ethan's plea to continue the relationship and insists she was serious about it being a one-time fling. Somehow I was hoping that Laura would have gone through the same kind of emotional development as Ethan and changed her mind about turning her back on him.

There is, of course, a happy ending, but the recovery from Laura's uncompromising leave-taking is a little hurried and a little contrived—understandable, perhaps, considering the limitations of length imposed by the novella format.

Ms Gaines writes great erotica that not only arouses but also exhilarates. Heat Rises is no exception. Marvellous stuff.(less)

WOW! What a smart, sexy novella!

Laura and Ethan met a few years earlier, in a Grad program. At a party, the usually shy Laura propositioned Ethan explicitly, and being a gentleman, he did not take advantage of her inebriated state.

After Ethan rejects her drunken advances at a college party, Laura spent the rest of the time at university avoiding him. But she never forgot him, especially on lonely nights. Coincidentally, they're also going for the same job. With both of them being stuck in the storm, Ethan has the perfect solution. He takes Laura to his friend's cabin to wait out the storm. There is sexual tension in the air, so they make a deal to act on it ONLY while they're there. So, take a guess what happens once their time is up? Yep, that's the story in a nutshell.

Now the sex...it was pretty steamy. Laura and Ethan get down to business pretty early on. When I read the description and the way Laura talks about the fantasies she's had, you'd think there was going to be some serious kink coming on. WRONG. I mean, there is an interesting moment that involves maple syrup, but I keep thinking about how sticky that would be. Then there was the plumber fantasy. It was a bit cheesy leading into the fantasy, but once they got to the sex...it was pretty hot. Other than that, nothing too out of the ordinary. Pretty vanilla. My favorite was probably the shower. *wink* Ethan and Laura certainly have quite an appetite for each other. I mean, his stamina is something to be admired. That boy can work it.

Bottom line is the plot was weak, but the sex was pretty hot. If you need a quick sexy read, take a look at this one. I didn't have to put ice down my shirt or stick my head in the freezer, but it was sexy. (less)

This book is a joke. I read the sample and enjoyed it so went ahead and bought the novella. Had the sample included just a few more pages, I never would have. The writing while so ridiculous and cheesy that I could not take it seriously. When Ethan told Laura that he wanted to "bury himself inside of her", I grimaced a bit. Love reading novellas - instant gratification! This one didn't disappoint - it was quick and dirty (heh, heh - get my double meaning?!). My only criticism is that this book had the makings of something much longer and more complicated. Ended well, but part of making a romance novel really good is having a long, drawn-out heartbreak...the heartbreak in this novel lasted all of 5 minutes! Oh well, still tres steamy and worth the read!
