Recommends it for:
fans of light Western romance.
This book was a fast, light read and a good introduction to the town of Rock Creek, and the six men who are hired to save it. Although I thought the men, for all of their issues, could have had much deeper characterization, it didn't hinder the story that much.
Mary McKendrick is used to managing. She lives alone in Texas, she's never had a family or friends to look out for her, and all she wants is to make a home of Rock Creek, Texas, where she is the schoolteacher. Even if it is full of women c...more

And now for something COMPLETELY different. Yes, this book is out of character for me, but I like Lori Handeland, and since I received a free copy I felt obligated to read it and write a review. I'm keeping the fact that it is a western romance in mind, and judging it accordingly.
I don't know from western tropes, but I do know the standard romance tropes, and Handeland hits them all. Mary is a spinster schoolmarm who is considered too plain and too outspoken to ever be attractive to any man - in...more

Wendy(Superlibrarian) and Kristie(J) seem to like a lot of the same books I like, so I pay attention when either one of them recommends something. Since both of them have extolled the wonders of the Rock Creek Six series, I pounced as soon as I saw the whole set come up on EBay. I still have five left to read (hooray!), but Reese gets the series off to a good start.

Add Lori Handeland to the list of romance authors with a phenomenal "voice," at least in this book. The interplay between the characters was so delightful, it overshadowed any minor criticism I might have about period-appropriate dialogue and historical accuracy. Almost any reader will forgive minor authorial slips when a book is as engaging as I found this one.

A great western romance. When dangerous banditos continually attack the small Texas town where Mary McKendrick teaches school, she takes it upon herself to hire Reese and his misfit group of ex-Confederate soldiers to take care of the problem. When the rough bunch arrives in Rock Creek, the townspeople, as well as Mary, are afraid their rescuers might be worse than the problem they’ve been hired to solve. As an orphan, Mary was raised in a convent and has little experience with men or the roughe...more

In a nutshell: The schoolteacher of Rock Creek, TX searches out Reese to hire him to save her town from El Diablo, an old Comanche with a gang of thugs who like to shoot up the town. Despite the small amount of money offered--and his own belief it was a bad idea--Reese takes the job, promising to bring five friends with him.
As the first installment of this series, "The Rock Creek Six", this was a great start. While there were little nit-picky things I could dwell on--i.e., typos, minor inaccura...more

EDIT:
"Their friendship forged during the bloody battles of the war Between the States, they are men with nothing left but their honor: When one calls, the others answer-and this time they will gather in the tiny town of Rock Creek, Texas, where their brand of justice is the only possible salvation...and where each man will find a woman determined to open his heart to love."
This was the first western romance book I was able to finish. In previous reads, I felt like I was in two different time per...more

I love the story of this book. I am on book 3 of the series. The characters are wonderful and really appeal to me. I laughed out loud many times during the book.
My one gripe and caveat is the graphic sex scenes. WHY WHY WHY??? So be prepared for a wonderful story that is really engaging, but be prepared to skip pages to keep it clean for yourself.

So good, strong male characters thy need a woman's love!! Mwahh more please
The first book in the western series Rock Creek Six. Reese and his gang of ex-confederate soldiers are hired to protect a small Texas town from banditos. Mary McKendrick is the schoolteacher there.
I found a couple of this series in a thrift store and bought them. It turned into a pleasant surprise when I finally opened this one and started reading. I wouldn't say there were any major surprises in the story and was really rather predictable but it was put together nicely and I enjoyed reading it.
