Argh!! Prepare yourself for a cliffhanger my friends......

So let me start with the iffy part first. The beginning of 'Torn' did have me a bit confused as it went back and forth between present, past, dreams and reality. I got to a point where I wasn't sure if a pivotal scene with Samantha aka Sam (our poor tortured main character) actually did happen or if she just dreamed it. Later in the book these first few chapters are explained and I was fine with it at that point.

So let me start with the iffy part first. The beginning of 'Torn' did have me a bit confused as it went back and forth between present, past, dreams and reality. So that's the iffy and here is the oh sweet angel in heaven goodness. The whole thing. Period. Loved this book. I enjoyed this story as much as I enjoy a chocolate bar at midnight. Um, in case you don't know me that is a whole heck of a lot!

The synopsis is self explanatory so I won't repeat that. What I will tell you is Christine Hughes does an amazing job of exploring the gut wrenching confusion and feelings of Sam who is torn between good and evil. Part of you wants to slap Sam and tell her to 'man up' or whatever the female equation of that is but if you put yourself in her shoes you realize she is spiritually being ripped in two by forces that she has no control over. Her best friend Lucas and his older brother Ethan act as her guardians trying to protect her and train her for a future that she has technically not decided on yet. As they race to protect Sam from the evil fallen angel Sebastian, basically he was the brains behind the the whole apple in the garden of Eden plot that destroyed man's ability to live peaceful lives (yea, thanks for that Sebastian), we come to realize we can't always trust in whom we thought we could and the answers may not be the ones we want.

This is a wonderful first book to a series that I will most certainly be following. There are some nice twists and turns along the way and as I stated in the beginning of my review there is a cliffhanger that will leave you hopeful for the future and yelling at Christine to write faster!! Oh and there is a nifty little forbidden love story too.

Don't let looks deceive behind this normal looking cover is a true wonder with a smooth flow. From start to finish i was gripped in a tale of good vs evil with a little added romance and good dose of oh wow's ! Samantha looks to have a tough time ahead and isnt entirely sure she can handle it . Plot line.
Good vs Evil is the basis of this story as with millions of others in the same genre...
Choises between good and evil is as old and older than writing...
Being betrayed, having to choose is ancient, Cain and Able can tell you that...

Her brothers eventually explain what is happening. Sam is an angel, as are the two boys, as were her mother and father. She is here to lead the battle between the good angels (the Faithful) and the evil angels (the Fallen). As a Faithful she is committed to the good side, but the Fallen are after her, sensing any weakness she might have so they can recruit her. And the Fallen do look pretty attractive to her.

So Sam begins to train. She knows she will have to kill Sebastian, the lead angel of the Fallen, who also killed her father. In the meantime, she starts to fall in love with one of her step-brothers. This just complicates things, and causes her to lose her focus. She also learns that her father once was a Fallen angel, although he came over to the Faithful side, so she has both Fallen and Faithful blood in her.

For eons in angel myths there has been the story of a very powerful angel who can walk equally well on the dark and bright sides. Is Sam that angel? If so, Sebastian will not be able to kill her, and she will not be able to kill him. It will be a draw. But Sam doesn't care much about that. She is going to kill Sebastian anyway. She is also going to rescue her younger brother, who has betrayed her and gone over to the dark side.

The book is marketed primarily as a Yong Adult novel, but adults will enjoy it as well. The book is also the first in a series about Sam. For a YA novel the scenes are richly detailed. The pace of the book is moderately fast, appropriate for a suspense/thriller. If you like suspense and action with a hint of the paranormal thrown in this is the book for you. (less)

Distracted by her growing attraction to Ethan, secrets are revealed that could hinder their affection for each other if they act on it. Torn between two brothers, one is her salvation and the other could be sacrificed if she makes the wrong decision. Her brain is on overload, feeling pressured and insecure, Sam is struggling to control her gifts or her mounting feelings that threaten to overshadow her soul and destroy everything. The Faithful seem convinced that Sam has already chosen a side as she has begun her transformation and it is only a matter of time before she succumbs. Sometimes it is not about who you are but it is what you do that defines you, the choices you make and how you live. Her father told her she will lose before she succeeds and she would be betrayed but by who? Darkness or light, redemption or retribution, love and hate, sometimes the lines get blurred. In life there needs to be a balance and the hard part is knowing where to draw the line. Whilst I did find this book really entertaining I was a little disappointed in the ending and thought it anticlimactic. The story built up for this final battle and for me it was over far too easily. All that aside I will be buying the next book as I found Sam likeable and engaging.(less)

This one falls into the first category.

We have all seen the same old story line concerning good and evil. It's been done a thousand times with the same results, but never have we seen it from the eyes of a seventeen year old who is about to find out what everyone else already knew; she (unwillingly) holds the key between darkness and light. She alone can decided the fate of mankind or will she straddle both worlds and play both sides? That's pretty cool. This reminds me of "Time Weaver" by Thomas A. Knight.

The key players are Lucas, Ethan and Samantha. Lucas and Ethan have been charged with training her for a coming battle. She hasn't a clue what is going on. Hm, how many seventeen years old (male/female) have we known with that quality? Can't count that high.

The most intriguing part of the book, it is told in the first person. No one is describing the events or adding unwanted commentary. The words are coming from Samantha and her feelings. This is right up there with "Scars" by Patience Prence.

As I read farther, the plot and action picked-up. I can see where every teenage girl who thrilled with the adventures of Buffy and today's True Blood and Vampire Diaries will fall in love with this story. What teenager doesn't want to be a true heroine while also exploring the sensations and feelings of love? They can also relate to the inner demons facing Samantha as she is forced to decided which side to take and which lover will do? Ah, but there is a problem. Are the potential mates there to train and watch over her, or is there a more sinister plot brewing?

Will Samantha's rage for her father's death guide her to the dark side or will she learn how to control her hate and channel it in the right direction? Think of the movie "Red Dawn" when the guerilla's learn that their parents were executed. How did that turn out? Yep, Samantha is full of pent-up energy that when used out of rage and anger has everyone ducking and taking cover, and I MEAN EVERYONE!

I recommend this book to all girls and women who are thirsting for a strong female character who never completely conquers her inner demons. (less)

I Have To Say I Was Really Surprised With This Book. Samantha Is My Favorite One In The Book. When Samantha Lost Her Dad It Was Heartbreaking It Reminded Me Of When I Lost My Mom. I Really Cried Then All This Stuff Started Going On And She Had To Make A Choice Between Light And Dark. This Book Definitely Kept Me On My Toes There Was Never A Dual Moment. When I read the synopsis of this book, I was like great more angels! ;) Thankfully this book turned out to be absolutely fantastic. It was the typical fallen angel book. After reading the synopsis for this book I knew I would enjoy it and I was right. It is a great story and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I found that angel books have a high exception of what they are supposed to be like. Most are all "angles are good" and so on. Torn wasn't your average angel book. Torn is a great book about a 17 yo discovering her life was not what she thought it was. After the death of her father, she is taken to safety by her foster brothers to "train". Although she is not given the why of this, she trains like Laura Croft. I’ve always wanted to write. Ever since I was little, I would craft stories and poems but the idea to actually do it “for real” never really crossed my mind until last year. Ever since I was little, I would craft stories and poems but the idea to actually do it “for real” never really crossed my mind until last year. After sitting on three paragraphs of what would eventually become my first novel, I decided to expand upon what I had. At the time I had no real idea of where the story would go, I just knew I had the time to do something with it.

I hadn’t researched market trends, I had no idea about query letters or the evil synopsis, and I was green on the idea of agents and editors and all that is publishing, really. I just wanted to write something I enjoyed. I didn’t plot, outline, or character build, I just wrote. And then an author friend mentioned that I should take my writing to a conference.

So with the confidence that my novel would surely be welcomed by all who read it, I signed up for as many seminars and critiques as I could. I knew someone would love it. In those two days, I found out I had a lot to learn.

Funny, but as a former English teacher, you’d think I’d have figured out the importance of editing and revision and revising again. You’d think I’d have known that the first draft is just that, a draft. And when the critiques started coming in, I thought I was done for. Not that the premise wasn’t good (I was told it was), not that the characters weren’t believable (I was told they were), but I used too much passive voice, I tense shifted and there were some holes in the plotline.

A few agents really liked it, but the market trend couldn’t support it. Some were not fond of the way I told the story. I queried and queried my way to 57 flat out rejections and a number of partial and full requests that didn’t pan out. But along the way I got some great criticism and pointers and I made the story better. Then, on a whim, I trolled the SavvyAuthors website and signed up for a three line pitch to editor Lauri Wellington and I did a happy dance when she requested my full manuscript.

A month later, she responded that she loved the story and the concept but it moved too slowly but I could resubmit if I revised. I informed her I sent her a revision that was based on the opinions of agents, authors and peers but I had the original (cleaned up, of course) and I was sending it in to see if it was more of what she was looking for. And guess what? It was! One caveat, I had to revise the manuscript into past tense. Easy peasy, right? Wrong.

Revising into past tense from present is line editing your entire novel. And it kinda stinks. By the end, I thought my eyes were gonna start bleeding and pop out onto my keyboard. But you know what? That little “exercise” tightened up what was loose, filled in any plot holes that might’ve still been there and forced me to realize I could be a better writer.

The road to publication can be long. It can be a hop, skip and a jump from your first query. Nothing in publication is set in stone. The market is always changing. And the biggest thing I learned is that it’s all subjective. Agents A-Y may pass but all you need is Agent or Editor Z to believe in you as much as you believe in yourself. And I believe in my first novel. And I am happy that Black Opal Books does too. I hope you do, as well.
