Da taucht 'Jack' auf. Ein Geist, der anders ist, als alle zuvor. Und sie beginnt sich - egal, wie idiotisch das auch sein mag - in ihn zu verlieben.
Fast gleichzeitig steht auch Tracy in ihrem Zimmer. Tracy, die auf Annabelles Schule gegangen ist und bei einem Autounfall starb. Anna hat noch nie zuvor einem Geist geholfen, den sie in seinem Leben kannte. Tracy will, dass Anna ihrer Familie hilft über ihren Tot hinweg zu kommen.
Außerdem ermutigen Tracy und Jack sie dazu ihren Freundinnen die Wahrheit zu erzählen. Das Ergebnis ist, dass Felicity bei ihren Eltern anruft und diese Anna wieder zum Psychiater schicken, der sie wieder unter Drogen setzt.
Ereignisse beginnen sich zu überschlagen und die Spannung steigt.

Was mir gefallen hat: eine Liebesgeschichte mit einem Geist!!! Habe ich auch schon geschrieben und daher war ich ganz begeistert. Von der Sorte hatte ich noch nicht viele gelesen.
Wie auch schon bei der Noctalis-Serie finde ich die Charaktere alle sehr überzeugend. Vor allem, wenn sie nicht immer alles erzählen, hat es immer einen gute Grund und wie man so schön sagt: 'they all come back to bite you'.

Was mir nicht so gut gefallen hat: die Editierung hat an manchen Stellen des ebooks versagt und die Stimmen der Geister, die immer kursiv geschrieben sind, sind manchmal normal - und umgekehrt und da ist es manchmal etwas verwirrend. Außerdem sind manchmal Tippfehler drin, die eindeutig durch eine automatische Rechtschreibprüfung entstanden sind.
Aber das ist wirklich alles nicht so dramatisch.

Alles in allem ein schönes Buch und es endet auch nicht mit einem riesigen Cliffhanger - man muss also nicht unbedingt gleich die anderen Bücher der Reihe lesen. Das finde ich auch mal erholsam!

Celeste’s review: I was intrigued straight away! I’m not usually a huge fan of ghost books, but after reading Ms. Cameron’s Noctalis series I am addicted to her writing…so I went into this with high expectations.

Non-spoiler summary: Anna can hear spirits speak to her, but she hears them only in her head. In order for them to hear her she has to talk out loud. Most just want to pass on a message to someone that is still living, and all things continue like this until she meets “Jack”. He was probably around her age when he died, but he can’t remember when or how or how long ago that was. That is all I can say about him. ;)

Anna feels so lost because her parents think she is mentally ill. But we know she talks to spirits, not to herself as her parents believe. Her best friends also know something isn’t right, and Anna learns one is supportive while the other calls her crazy. This just pushes Anna further into isolation…so Jack seems to be a welcome friend. However, her friendship with Jack only continues the cycle; she keeps talking to Jack because it makes her feel less lonely, but that just isolates her more at the same time.

Quickfire on Anna’s friends:
Nora = sweet
Felicity = judgemental
Tracy = kind, would have lived life differently
Beth = nicer deep down

What I loved: Anna’s struggle with the fact that Jack wasn’t real. This gave me a real emotional reaction that Ms. Cameron did perfectly. I was so torn, just like Anna. I kept turning the pages waiting for Jack to solidify! *crosses fingers there’s some magic about that in the next book*. I also loved how Anna dealt with her “issue”. I could personally feel her helplessness at the whole gift vs. mental illness situation. I could see there was no way out!

My teensy gripe: Her mother. I can’t get past what happened at the end. Her mother is the kind of person I love to hate. She is not able to handle Anna’s illness (gift) and she does things “her way or the highway”. There was never any discussion. To her it was cut and dry. The way it ended….I’m not sure it was so believable. However, after the dust settles by the time we get into book 2 we should see if her mother follows through. I’m interested to see how their family life changes.

Rec it? oh my gosh, YES! I loved the story, I loved the frustration I felt at people not believing Anna. I really felt it! When an author can generate emotion out of me as the reader, it’s a total success in my book. It’s a fabulous quick read that will have leave you wanting more.(less)

I stumbled across this book when browsing ebooks and ended up buying it. I enjoyed the story but the characters drove me crazy! Annabelle can see and hear dead people who need her help to cross over. Her parents are quick to put her on drugs that basically turn her into a zombie because they think she has mental issues. Anabelle has been hearing ghosts as long as she can remember. If she tries to ignore them, they become a nuisance, and can potentially become dangerous. So she does what she can to help them complete their unfinished business so they can move on. When she starts hearing a male spirit, she knows almost right away there is something different.

First off, he can’t remember anything about his life. Not even his name. So she gives him a name, Jack. He is also not afraid to say he is dead, where most other spirits are not a fan of the D word. He also brings her the spirit of a girl she went to school with who was killed in a hit and run, who needs help moving on.

While dealing with this, she has to keep her friends and family in the dark about what she can do. The only one who believes her is her younger sister. And continue to be a straight A student. And keep her babysitting job. And deal with all the regular angst that comes from being 17. Poor thing, I would have lost my mind.

Annabelle is a very sweet and forgiving person, unlike myself. One of her “friends” does something that jeopardizes everything, and as mad as she is, eventually forgives her. I on the other hand, would at the very least have never spoken with her again. Probably would have done much worse. But then again, I have the temper to match the red hair. ;-)

And Jack is adorable. You can tell he was a romantic in life, and is very old fashioned. He is sweet, patient, and non-corporeal, which is sometimes a negative, but sometimes a positive too. He can go with Anna no matter where she is. His story, which I hope we find out more of in book two, is so far very tragic. He can only remember one detail from his life, and it is not one I would wish to recall. Not that his detail is something I have ever done or will ever do, I am just saying that if I did, I am sure I would like to forget it. I hope that made sense.

Overall, this book is very sweet. Not recommended for action junkies or people who prefer a lot of, um, physical action, if you know what I mean. But it is recommended for people who like sweet stories, and unique romances. I give this book a total of 4 out of 5 stars, just because Anna could have had a little more of a back bone IMHO.(less)

I wasn't disappointed with this story. The mystery of Jack, Tracy's death and the threat of Anna being put back on her meds had me eager to turn the pages. I was so scared her parents would force her on the meds and all the spirits would disappear. Especially Jack. I loved the interaction between Anna and Jack. Their banter was cute and the way she tried to convince herself she was reading into his words was adorable. The mystery of what Jack was slowly unraveled throughout the book at a pace that didn't leave me annoyed. The same with their relationship. It wasn't insta-love, but it grew at a pace that wasn't too slow for me either.

Anna's ability to see spirits wasn't a basket full of roses either. When she tried to tell family members about Tracy's spirit, there wasn't instant belief. She had to find the right person who would believe her. Her friends as well. They didn't just say, "Oh, you're our friend so you must be telling the truth!" There was fear and skepticism that created some interesting conflict. Although, personally, I wouldn't have been so quick to forgive the one friend.

One thing I liked about this story was how Anna's ability wasn't the center of her world. She had girls night where Jack was not allowed. She did activities with her little sister and had a job. The world of the dead crept into her living life a lot, but it didn't feel like she completely abandoned the land of the living just to help spirits. I see that in a lot of paranormal stories. The character finds out about the paranormal world and abandons their old life for it.

Over all, I enjoyed the story and give it four stars. The writing was pretty smooth. There were times when the beginning of the paragraph said one thing, and then the end said the same thing in a different way, but it wasn't often enough to be annoying. I spotted a few minor typos, but again, they weren't big and I was too eager to find out how the story ended to care about them. I do think formatting gnomes gnawed on my copy of Whisper. When Tracy or Jack talked it was with italics and sometimes their words wouldn't be italicized or other times the whole paragraph would be. Hiccups like that happen during upload and this isn't the first time the gnomes have attacked.(less)

You know, sometimes i wish i could bitch slap fictional characters. Not Anna but some of the others in the book for sure.

I liked this book it was interesting & well written. The story was quite dark at times & always very emotional.

If you like ghost type stories- especially for those that like the TV show Ghost Whisperer- this is the book for you.

Anna can hear the dead and finds that she needs to help them on their way. I've read books by this author and was blown away, this one did not disappoint! The story was amazing and how Annabelle was faced with so many problems from betrayal from friends and family, being put on meds because she can do things other people can't and falling in love with a ghost that 'what he seems. The love in this story is well paced and believable. 'Jack' is amazing, hes sweet and tough depending on what Annabelle to get through everything she has to deal with but also needs to do. This was a fast paced, compelling read - I just HAD to find out what was going to happen to Anna. The characters were so realistically drawn that I spent most of the book vacillating between wanting to punch Anna's parents and wanting to shake Anna for being so nice and forgiving. I was seriously pissed off a lot throughout this book. Not cause the book was bad in any way but cause of the parents in this story. God, I wanted to hurt them :(. I cried, I got mad, and I felt for her. I seriously went through a lot of emotions for this book.

But it was addicting and I stayed up later than usual to finish the book.

I absolutely loved Whisper. I am so happy to have found another book like Meg Cabot's The Mediator series so that I will have another set of books to read once I finish Meg Cabot's series. The main character, Anna, is completely loveable and makes the story feel very genuine. I really appreciated that Chelsea Cameron really let the book go down a dark path, because she could have easily made it a light, heartfelt read. I liked the characters, which is the most important part of the story, at least to me. I felt for Annabelle and her struggles with her family, her abilities and depression. I look forward to reading more about her and her world. I was lucky to meet author Chelsea M. Cameron at a book signing, and her humor and intelligence reminded me a lot of Annabelle.
