When the Spanish arrived in the Caribbean in 1492, they left destruction in their wake. But no people were as devastated as the Tainan Indians. Even the name of the island where they made their home--Quisqueya--was stolen, and called Hispaniola.

In the wake of the Spanish Conquest, the Taino people struggled not for survival, but simply to be remembered. Their histories, th

First of all, thumbs up to Gloria Bond for writing the only historical novel I can find on the subject of the Tainos and the destruction the Spanish inflicted upon them. Her research is amazing and her characters really come alive.

I agree, the book is corny and has a novice tone about it. But Sons of Yocahu was recommended reading from my university Caribbean History course and I found it to be a digestible way of understanding Columbus' discovery of Hispaniola. It's easy to read historical textbooks and detach yourself from the humanity of the conquered, but the story made me feel for the characters. This book was very corny on several levels. There were several historical inaccuracies and many of the events were based on speculation. Also, the storyline that a Spanish boy was supposed to be the savior of the Tainos was like The Last Samurai. The last chapter of Yucahu talking to the reader was pretty ridiculous. That being said, I'm obsessed with anything Taino so I still iliked it.

This books tells the tales of a Taino family and their struggles during the arrival of the Spaniards in Hispaniola. It is a lovely story which, although fictional, paints a picture of the time of colonization which I always wanted to envision.
