The second Hercule Poirot novel. To explain its plot accurately would take half an hour and a whiteboard, but briefly: the Belgian detective and his aide Hastings are summoned to the house of M. Renauld, a millionaire who fears for his life. They arrive too late, finding him already dead, half-buried in an unfinished golf bunker, supposedly at the hands of bearded foreign thugs, and possibly at the hands of a jilted lover. But Poirot soon unearths not one, but two of the principals are living un ...more

Wonderful

Gosh, Agatha Christie is such a delight to read. And bloody hell that woman knows how to write some twists and turns. I'll admit that Captain Hastings insta-love storyline isn't my thing, but we'll forgive it all because Christie and Poirot are wonderful.

I spent a lot of ‘Murder on the Links’ distinctly worried about Captain Hastings. Firstly, he spends some time seemingly flirting with a younger, French detective, even at points seeming to agree with this interloper that Poirot is past it; then he causes a crime scene to be corrupted; and finally he actually puts himself in opposition to Hercule Poirot. As if he could ever beat his old friend in a battle of wits or a battle of nerves or a battle of anything. In later Poirot novels, Hastings alw ...more

Recommends it for: Everyone
4 Dame Christie stars!

My 3rd Christie, and I think this was the best, as of now. Agatha knows how to build a murder mystery and churn out your gray cells to try matching the renowned expert, Hercule Poirot. The murder here was fantastic in planning and structure, and as always, I failed to put up the right guess (I understand you well, Hastings!).

"The great criminal (as you may remember my remarking to you once) is always supremely simple.”

And so it was. The victim was there, just there, a

Three and a half stars.

Poirot receives a letter from a client which requires a sudden rush to France by boat, accompanied by Hastings. On arrival at the home of Monsieur and Madame Renauld they are confronted by the celebrated French detective, Monsieur Giraud. Their working relationship is not an easy one and both Poirot and Giraud feel a sense of superiority over their own reputations and very different methods. Giraud is deliberately insulting and in return, Poirot taunts Giraud.

The novel is

Awesome!! Unbelievable!!

This is the third Agatha Christie's Novel I read!! I am spellbound that a person could so meticulously weave a thrilling tale!! Can't think of what inspired her to write but bowled over by the narration!!

Hercule Poirot's shrewdness is unbelievable and there is always Honest Hastings with him through out!! Every character will rise suspicion while reading, but u can never stop guessing!! Mind ticks like clock during each line!! A wonderful page turner, ur eyes will be glue

Hercule Poirot returns to once again solve a murder, this time of a wealthy Frenchman who seems to have foreseen his death. It’s not about Poirot being smarter than other detectives or about him noticing more details—it’s about his method, his organized way of approaching those details and fitting the theory to the facts rather than the other way around.

Contrary to what the title might imply, there is no golf in this book. (Thank God.) Rather, the body turns up in an open grave on the golf cours

The second Hercule Poirot novel, published in 1923. 40 more to go! This one has a tad lower rating on Goodreads than most of the others, and I had a hard time getting into it, but on the whole I really liked it, about a 3.5. Poirot burst onto the literary crime scene almost fully realized, in what was her third published book! He's a great character, with a distinct and interesting personality, an elderly Belgian detective with a flair for logic and simplicity and "exercising the grey cells" in ...more

Full review.
This time the crime was quite exciting, it had a great deal of mystery around it and a lot of characters to suspect and surprisingly little with a reason to actually perform the crime, but nevertheless Poirot was on the scene trying to find the murderer, but so was a concurrent of his and this race to find the killer and relationship between both detectives was something new and fresh.

I was rather taken by a surprise hence I did guess the murderer correctly, but I feel like the endin

The second novel in Hercule Poirot series, the plot is a little complicated, if you ask me, but briefly, Poirot receives a letter from a Frenchman who says that his life is in danger. Poirot and Hastings start off for his house, but are a little late and find him dead when they reach. Now Poirot has to find the killer, and tolerate a nasty french detective who disagrees on everything Poirot says that he

Re-read 2/16/12: I'm in the process of re-reading all of Agatha Christie - one of my favorite authors!

I'd take Agatha over most other books, but this isn't my favorite book of hers. It's the 3rd book she published and her second to involve Hercule Poirot. I think she stumbled a bit. She defines Poirot's character, but makes him appear a bit too harsh. She also makes Hastings appear like a love-sick buffoon, instead of just a lovable romance-prone gentleman. She won't write about the pair again

It seems hard to believe that Murder on the Links is only the second Hercule Poirot novel--and the one where Hastings meets his soon-to-be wife and disappears to the Argentine for a vast number of books. After leaving the books alone for a while and watching the lovely adaptions starring David Suchet, it has made me think that Hastings was always there--for every one of Poirot's cases. Alas, it was not so. But, on to the review...

In Murder on the Links, Poirot receives an urgernt message from fa

The queen of Mystery. Agatha Christie. No seriously. Every single time my reviews reflect the same surprise, the same amazement, the same confusion, and of course: the same feeling of stupidity that I hadn't guessed the murderer! HOW ON EARTH IS CHRSITIE SOOOO GOOOOD???? OH JEEZ GODS HEAVENS WHAT IS MY LIFE??? To think that one line could make all the difference- "The girl with the anxious eyes".

And oh my my!! Hastings, I missed you buddy!!! In all the seriousness of the book, he brings in the

Well into 'The Murder on the Links' Hercule Poirot says to Captain Hastings, the narrator of the story, 'If you would use your grey cells, and see the whole case clearly as I do, you too would perceive it, my friend.'

Obviously at this point Hastings was not cognisant of what was going on and I must confess I was in his camp too. Later Poirot states, again to Hastings, who has incongruously fallen in love with a young lady, 'Ah! Voila une femme.' So at least we begin to suspect that a young lady

BOTTOM LINE: Not at all her best novel, but an interesting read - quite annoying by about a third of the way through, but by the end becomes very satisfying in its twists and turns. “Fair Play!” from a de luxe detective, decent pacing, and a fair amount of romance as well.

Begged to “come immediately!”, when Poirot arrives in a small French resort town he is informed that his client is dead, under extremely suspicious circumstances. And Madame Renauld has been found bound and gagged; when releas

Hercule Poirot is just such a great character with his little grey cells and his
