Sons of Fortune is a long novel (500+ pages) about the lives of two men, Nat Cartwight and Fletcher Davenport. These two men are identical twins who were separated at birth, with Fletcher being switched to replace the deceased baby of the other woman. Both men live similar lives, as they both go to rival private schools, and both run in school elections. Since both run for school president, they both get the aid of their best friends, who also help them as they both run against each other for th...more

I read Archer's Twelve Red Herrings and liked it, so I started this book.

I thought the premise was really interesting--twins separated at birth, who will one day meet each other again, probably as rivals. I lost interest in the book when Nat goes over to his crush's house to see her and her older sister starts feeling out his crotch. First of all, if he likes the younger sister, (and the author has already made it clear that he really, really does) why would he let her do that? Maybe the author...more

Jeffrey Archer is a well-established English author, who has written such bestsellers as Kane and Abel and Honor Among Thieves, but his latest addition to the publishing world, Sons of Fortune, fails in many ways; maybe it is because he wrote it under the duress of incarceration?

For about a year now Archer has spent his time in prison because he was essentially embezzling money as a member of the House of Lords. In that time he has written and produced a play pleading his innocence, and has writ...more

A typical Archer read. This time again involving politics and elections of the US of A. A potboiler for Indian Bollywood cinemas. I am surprised somebody has not come up with a movie based on this. Maybe they are scared to lift without Lord Archer's permission.
The story of two twins, separated at birth and brought up by different parents, not geographically distant from each other. But they end up as political rivals because of the political affiliations of the family in which they were brought...more

It was an okay read. Knowing Jeffrey Archer's work, I expected the book to be filled with suspense and action. However, it was more like a realistic drama. The storyline was fast paced and easy to read, but it was lacking a climax.. the developments and twists in the story were minimal; it was such a disappointment.

Fletcher and Nat were separated at birth, where Fletcher ended up with the Davenport's, a well established family. Nat, on the other hand, was raised by his birth parents, the Cartwri...more

Sons of Fortune enthralled me. Totally. One of the Books I will never get enough of. It was my first Archer novel, and I’m glad that I decided to read this wonderful, gripping and remarkable story.

Nat Cartwright and Fletcher Davenport; separated at birth are dizygotic twins (twins developed from two separate oocytes fertilized at the same time. They may be of the same or opposite sex, differ both physically and genetically) they were both raised in different worlds. One, goes to a wealthy fami...more

SONS OF FORTUNE!
Starts of with a mind-blowing chapter, twins separated at birth. One, goes to a wealthy family, 'The Davenport's' and the other to a middle class, ' the Cart wright's'. They grow into fine young men, their school days, their higher education, the war, how they meet each other(not even having the slightest idea that they were brothers by birth) etc. Archer , the great, does these work of art in top form, keeps us mesmerized as we turn every page, and will make us turn it further...more

just finished reading it. and after reading the last line, i turned the page to look for more, cux i wasnt sure if it was over. i am still confused.
other than that, it was a nice read, fast paced, quickly moving, the two guys, nat and fletcher were surely quite fortunate, from the time of birth. brothers seperated at teh time of birth and not meeting until they both decide to run in the elections, their paths cross many times, tehy fell in love with the same girl, they both had the same enemy a...more

Through the years I have read most of Archer's many novels and love his casual way of guiding a plot to it's conclusion. This story has his style written all over it and since Law and Politics are his world, there are many interesting pages filled with take-overs and political campaigns and savvy conversations between makers and shakers and breakers... It follows the story of twins separated at birth whose lives continuously crisscross each other unbeknownst to them both. The parallels run so cl...more

After reading five Jeffrey Archer novels, I was looking forward to reading the sixth one. I thought the book was average and lacked the edge and grandeur of Kane and Abel or A Prisoner Of Birth. For a book that started off well, it ended up being rather long and tedious for the story and the eventual climax. The book could have been slightly shorter. Don't get me wrong, the size of the book is never an issue. But it has to justify the story being told. At times, I thought that the author was sim...more

Read this book on a rountrip from Austin to Detroit. It was a nice travel companion. Archer is a superb storyteller.

The story follows the lives of 2 twin brothers who were separated at birth, but whose lives seem to criss cross and run on a parallel course. There is no real mystery plot or big surprises - just the life story of several individuals. You get insight into the "other half" as Archer paints the story of the American Northeast aristocrat.

It was enjoyable for me as I grew up in Connect...more

We were in Atlanta a few weeks ago celebrating Dad's birthday. Dad was going to donate several books he had stashed away and suggested I take a look through them. I logged onto GR and searched the reviews. Sons of Fortune stood out immediately. The book's premise is very interesting, if a little unoriginal. Legal/politcal thrillers are not a personal favorite, but I was looking for something different to read and SoF seemed a good selection. It ended up being a great choice. SoF definitely excee...more

I actually went for another book but because I could not find that one I just picked up this one up. Having read Jeffrey Archer before and thus made up an image of really fast moving work from this author, I thought no harm.

The book is very aptly titled 'Sons of Fortune' as while reading we would think or are constantly reminded to think of the fortunes of 2 of the leads had one moment of decision making by a nurse hadn't happened.

Nat Cartwright and Fletcher Davenport[ Peter Cartwright] are tw...more

The story takes place in the late 1940s in Hartford, Connecticut, where a set of twins are parted at birth. Nat Cartwright goes home with his parents, a school teacher and an insurance salesman, but his twin brother is to begin his days as Fletcher Davenport, the only son of a multimillionaire and his society wife.

During the years that follow, the two brothers grew up unaware of each others existence. Even when they fall in love with the same girl, they do not have the opportunity to meet. Nat C...more

Another delightful book from JA>
The story begins with the birth of the twins in late 50's and goes to narrate as to how they get separated immediately after birth, grow up in different families and how after 4 decades of eventful life, their paths crossing several times, both end up as candidates for the same Governorship, and eventually find out that they are brothers and the story ending with the election results ending up in a tie and is decided by toss of a coin.
Its delightful reading for...more

I'm saying it bluntly. Jefferey Archer does not maintain his usually high standards in this book. It is a story of two brothers- twins, separated at birth by fate. The book explores how they lead their different lives and finally cross each others' path when they both run for the same election. The book cover tells you as much. What is doesn't tell you is that it is that it contains nothing that you haven't seen or heard before. It is a bit far-fetched and painfully long- the kind of stuff you r...more

Nice story by Archer written in a very relaxed style. At first I wondered why there was so much useless dialog that does nothing to support the plot, then I realized that due to this style, the book was less of a story being told and more of a story being experienced. You feel like you are along for the ride and sitting in the room with the characters listening to them banter back and forth. The plot is based around twins separated at birth and their two paths as they live their lives. I wasn't...more

'And he turned to the person to his right and said... May I be the first one to congratulate you Governor'...Loved the ending... It actually made me turn pages and solve the confusion.

A typical Jeffrey Archer... Politics and Drama... a parallel comparison of two lives... It felt like I was reading Kane & Abel all over again.. except for the amiability factor between the two characters.

Though the concept was a bit interesting at a higher level.. the whole storyline could not deliver the imp...more

While not my favorite novel by this author, it is well written (as are all his books) and it's a good story. I just wasn't in love with the story line. I give it a 4 because I remember reading it, remember enjoying it, and I finished it. (It's somewhat difficult to review books I read years ago and there are too many books in the world to go back and read them again, no matter how good I thought they were at the time!)

Jeffrey Archer is one of my favorite authors so when I say not my favorite by...more

It's one of his brilliant stories that I love. It has every details that you need to know but not really dragging. I was immensely absorbed with the story from the first page, as I always did whenever I read his books. It may seems boring to know a life story of two person but it certainly has an element which makes you ponder what will happen between the two of them. A separated twin- not by an accident but too many incidents involved related to them that makes you want them to meet each other...more

finished.

Awesome book, but then again, I never feel any different about Archer's books! I wanted more character development in the beginning, because I kept getting names mixed up throughout the book. With most chapters flipping between scenes, it was VERY hard to keep track of who was who.
I remember that Nat, Fletcher, Tom and Jimmy were the main characters, lol!
Seriously though, a great book with some legal angles, politics and rivalry. Everything you need in a great book!

It's been ages since I've found a book that makes me want to keep reading it until I finish. As you get older, books tend to be less exciting. There's nothing all that interesting, which is why reading became a chore as of lately. This book changes all that. I found myself bringing it everywhere and, in that small interval of time the teacher takes to clear the board or explain something I already know, I would open this book and continue reading. It was that addicting.

Dapet dari bazar dengan harga super miring, jadi agak meragukan pada awalnya, apalagi karena bukunya cukup tebel. Ternyata ceritanya bagus.

"Tidak bisakah mereka mem...more

Amazing story about twins separated from birth, one to a rich family, the other to his middle class natural parents. How the two boys grow up, while constantly hearing of each other's name yet not knowing the truth, until the boiling conclusion when they run against each other for governer of state and the truth is revealed. Another, addictive, hard-to-put down novel by Archer. Really worth a read, just don't get hooked!

A great drama by mr. Archer telling the lives of two brothers in his own lucid style. Both get separated just after their birth due the demand of fate, one becomes the son of a wealthy couple and other remains with his natural parents ...destiny brings them together firstly when one gets the accusation of being a murderer and other becomes his defense lawyer....both finally stand for the election of senator....

It ended up fine. Like most Archer novels,it spanned a lifetime of 2 "brothers" with a secret. I have to say that there were genuine "WOW" moments, and the last page is one of the BEST LAST pages i have ever read. I really enjoyed the ending so much, i stayed up WAY late to finish. Havent done that in a long time. To "new to Archer" fans, start with thrillers like 11th commandment; or honor among thieves. If you like stories, epic stories..this one, cane/able; prodigal's daughter are all very we...more

Jeffrey Archer has an amazing way with character building in all his stories. You feel like you're walking alongside them in the story. Is the story believable? Perhaps not - that's why it's called a work of fiction. That said it's following two parallel lives of twins separated at birth. There's a good and captivating story with some excellent twists and turns. All in all an excellent read.
