I was handed this book by the head of a middle school and it is a solid piece of work. The subtitle is a bit misleading since much of the emphasis is on sharing control with your students. The basic idea is that people's self-worth and desire for control are at play in most situations where a student is 'misbehaving'. Therefore, valuing the student (regardless of the judgment of their behavior), showing empathy, giving students options in situations where we might usually dictate, and giving stu...more

This seems to be a very good strategy for classroom management and behavior therapy. I have used it some in my classroom and it works. It was recommended to me by some fellow teachers who use Love & Logic in there entire schools. It is also a great resource for parenting. There are many books geared for parents

I have been teaching for about 3 1/2 years. My parents used Love and Logic in our house, so as a classroom tool, it made great sense to me.
It taught me how to effectively interact with all students, even the ones that "push my buttons" in constructive way.
They have easy to use ideas that do not replace what you're already doing. You might decide to change something you're doing now, but its not meant to be a system really. It is about controlling you and letting them contro...more

A MUST-HAVE for teachers, particularly upper-grade teachers. (Parents: get Parenting with Love and Logic)
If you ONLY get three discipline books, it should be this one, How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk, and the Fred Jones book.

This is the best 'teaching' book I have read. If you want to have fun in the classroom and teach kids to be responsible, this is your book. Every teacher (k through grad. school) should read this book.

There is no one magic bullet, but Fay's approach and philosophy go a loooong way toward not just having better "classroom management," but- I think - better teaching overall.

I learned that in student relations and especially in teacher-student relations, "anger makes it worse!" And..."you need to give power to get power."

I read this book right after reading A Thomas Jefferson Education and was pleasantly surprised how well this philosophy of discipline went hand in hand with that method of education. Perhaps I should have read the parenting version of this book, but it was easy to take the examples from the classroom and realize how well they would work for parenting in general.

Excellent book on classroom management. Highly recommended. Could be a bit more organized, but that's ok.

LOVE this style of teaching!
Jim Fay has some incredible ideas for how to manage student behavior while teaching them to think for themselves.
Side note - I finished all but the last couple of chapters because with teaching it got set aside. Most of the super practical daily stuff is at the beginning and can be applied almost immediately to most daily happenings in the classroom though!

I read this book near the end of my teaching career. I wished I had read it much sooner. It was extremely helpful! I attended several Love and Logic seminars and they really helped to solidify the concepts in my mind and in my daily practice. I would like to read the parenting books by the same authors because this is a discipline philosophy I can really buy into.

This book describes perfectly the kind of classroom environment I use. It is based on a positive approach that is much more effective than what many "old school" teachers use to manage their classrooms. Love the book and love the new ideas I am definitely going to try out come August.

This book became the foundation of my discipline technique in the classroom. It helped me with some of the most difficult students. I love it because it focuses on choices, natural consequences, compassion, and developing a trusting relationship with the child as a foundation for discipline.

Great for any person working in a school or with school aged students. It is a lot of fun to read something in this book and try it the next day in your class. It is almost like a challenge and you look for situations that occur and are explained in the book.

I like it so far. I tried a couple of the ideas in my summer school class, and I have to say - I think part of the reason this works is because the kids are so confused by the unexpected responses from the teacher! But hey, I'm not one to complain...

I started reading this book a couple of weeks before school stared this year. It has really changed my approach to classroom discipline and I have had a wonderful start to the school year. I plan to keep re-reading it throughout the year.

Many wonderful ideas to help with classroom management - which even after 30 years is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching. Love the ideas of how to diffuse a potentionally difficult situation in a stressfree manner!
