The Poison Apples
by
Lily Archer
We all know the stories of Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel. But have you ever heard of Alice Bingley-Beckerman, Reena Paruchuri, or Molly Miller? Of course you haven’t. Not yet. What these girls have in common with their fairy tale sisters is this: they are the stepdaughters of three very evil stepmothers. And they’re not happy about it. They think they are alone in t...more

Raise your hand if you have an evil stepmother. Alice, Reena and Molly all do. For various reasons, each girl finds herself at a posh boarding school in rural Massachusetts and each tries her best to pretend she doesn’t come from a messed-up, broken family. When they find each other, they discover they no longer have to suffer alone or in silence, and the Poison Apples are born.

I'd call this a tween book because it involves 15 year olds at a boarding school in the mountains, but nothing particularly mature happens. Alice, Reena, and Molly all start their first semester of boarding school with one thing in common: their fathers have all just married horrible women. Eventually, after attempting to hide their freaky families from each other, they discover their common thread and form a club called the Poison Apples in which to commiserate and plot revenge.

I read this book in one sitting on a Sunday afternoon. For some reason I expected it to be paranormal fiction of some sort, but it's not. It's reasonably entertaining realistic fiction about 3 girls at boarding school who bond over the fact that they have crazy stepmothers and screwed up families. I think it suffers a bit from lack of character development from focusing on three main characters, and it lags a bit after a good beginning. So, it's not great but it is a quick, mostly fun read that...more

Alice Eltern sind bekannte...more

The element of the ridiculous--not the fantastic, which the fairy-tale title suggests, but the ridiculous--is used really well here. On the surface this tells the story of Alice, Reena, and Molly, all of whom are saddled with newly acquired stepmothers and consequently enroll at Putnam Mount McKinsey boarding school. While initial first impressions cause a few issues, they eventually bond and form a group called the poison apples, vowing to take revenge on their evil stepmothers. Although each m...more
What a fun book! This novel switches points of view between three different girls who all have evil stepmothers. Eventually the three become friends and decide to do something about their respective evil stepmoms.
Archer did a great job recreating what it was like to be a teenager, too -- obsessed with your friends, but in a really good way; determined to take charge of your own life and decide who you are; dealing with adults who don't always treat you that well; judging others and feeling judge...more

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading fiction books to start off with. This book is more like a cinderalla story. Three girls meet in a bording school and share similar stories together. They all have evil step mothers and got sent off to bording school. Many teens out there have evil stepmothers and get treated bad but don't say anything they just let it happen. These girls try to keep it away from each other because they don't realize that they have the same things in common...more

I had read several rave reviews of this book, so I really couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Unfortunately, it didn't deliver. While the beginning was witty and funny, the end fell flat, neatly wrapping everything up in a pretty little bow, which, I guess, some people enjoy, but I was left disappointed.
“ The Poison Apples”, by Lily Archer is where three girls somehow have ended up in the same school under the same fate. They have ended up in the same place because they all have stepmothers. I know what you're thinking, it's another book just like Cinderella, but its not. They storyline is not even the same like Cinderella. Alice, Reena, and Molly don’t even live close to one another. They all have problems with their stepmothers. One is that they don’t really like them and the rather have the...more
I liked this book, because it proves you can make stuff up with you're family and devise evil yet extremly unlikly plans with friends. I know what you're thinking, you probably don't like happy endings,or you think I'm being all hippy and lovely, but we all talk about people behind their backs (don't deny it!) then go home and chill out with you're family/flatmates/pet. if you have never said something about someone behind their back think way, way back to you're childhood days, and if you don't...more
The writing is fine and the plot pretty good, but some of the material was inappropriate for teen fiction. Several comments about popular 15 year olds having only had sex with 4 guys and trying to increase that number seemed to imply that is ideal teen behavior. None of the main characters had even kissed a boy, but the implications from other characters really turned me off. I would never recommend it to a teenager.

I rated this book four stars because it was very well written and it appealed to me very much. It tells a story of a snow white type deal where she is stuck with and evil stepmother. In this case three different girls with very different lives unite and confide in each other as they share their secrets of evil stepmmothers. After a while they form a secret group called the Poison Apples to plan revenge on the three women who had ruined their lives as soon as they stepped into them. Not only in t...more
I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the character development of Alice, Molly, and Reena. They started out miserable, but grew to find a sort of family with each other. They also softened up to their stepmothers, which is nice.
I liked that the story was told from the viewpoints of all three girls. There were quite a few funny twists in this book too. I especially liked the penguin-napping story!

L'ambientazione però è molto suggest...more

Alles in allem eine moderne Mädchen-Internats-Geschichte - unterhaltsam, gut g...more
I loved the first half of the book. Each of the girls was distinctive, and I felt for each one as her world was turned upside down as her father remarried a "wicked stepmother." One of the most poignant things I read was where one girl was homesick, but realized she had no home to miss as her father had sold their former home to move in with his new wife. Another girl wrote how she missed her dad, although he was in the same room with her! So sad. So heart-breaking, especially because I know thi...more
I loved this book! The Poison Apples was written really well, and the plot was well-planned. I loved how the author switched between the three main characters and talked about their different points of views. The characters were all teenagers that I could relate to as well. At first, the book was a bit confusung, but as the book went on, I understood what was going on and how the main characters related to each other. The characters were all humerous and they had a story behind them that you cou...more
Absolutely loved this novel! A great YA book of three 15 year old girls sent to boarding schools after their fathers hook up with the step mothers from hell. Molly is a dictionary nerd, Alice is depressed from her mother's death and the beautiful Reena is struggling to understand how her father wound up with a Yoga instructor half his age.
Lily Archer nailed the adolescent experience of young girls becoming women while their parents descend into adolescence. Highly recommended.

I stumbled upon this while weeding last week. I thought it would fit in well with this week's book club assignment: retelling of fairy tales. Well, it's not that. It only references Snow White and other evil stepmother stories. Although, I thought it was breezy, likable, funny and sweet. It's true that the characters are sorta cliched/stereotype... but each one is rounded out and given real depth, so I didn't mind.
Alice, Reena, and Molly meet at an elite boarding school in Massachusetts. Though on the surface they don't seem to have anything in common, they eventually discover that they all have evil stepmothers. And when I say evil, I mean Evil with a capital E. The girls bond over their unfortunate family circumstances and form a club called the Poison Apples with the aim to get revenge on their stepmothers.

This book has a great concept, but the changing point of view and "teenage banter" quickly become annoying. Three girls, who are ethnically and economically different, are all sent to a boarding school by their Evil Step-Mothers. The premise is formulaic, and the book becomes boring in the middle. The ending wasn't thought out and leaves the reader wondering why they started the story.
I was debating between two and three stars for this one. It was a fun little book, but different than i expected. It's not a fairytale retelling despite what the blurb seemed to imply. In fact they don't mirror fairytales at all with the exception of the evil stepmothers. So I was really only disappointed because I'd been expecting something completely different. Oh well.
Seemed like a looottt of complaining.. and I have a stepmom myself so part of it I could relate to in not really wanting to try and get to know her. I still wanted to hold out on that my parents may get back together. But I loved my stepmom and stepsister. They're great and so that is the only reason that I didn't give it three starts, but really it was a good book.
I picked this book up because the title made me think this book had something of a fairy tale to it. While this was not the case (the three main characters all having evil stepmothers was as close as it got to a fairy tale), I did enjoy how much the three girls learned about life...and themselves...while attempting to get revenge on their stepmothers.
This is a story of the life of 3 teenagers juggling their stepmothers, boarding school and the urge for revenge. it's not a fairy tale type of story and will take you through chapter by chapter into their world.
it's about living your life, taking fate into your hands and sometimes.. just sometimes letting go!
it's about living your life, taking fate into your hands and sometimes.. just sometimes letting go!
Really funny and cute! It's really cool seeing the characters hate each other at the beginning and then become the greatest friends. Also seeing them mess up and assume the wrongest things about other people is weird, because I sometimes look back and think, Do I act like this? Ha ha. A quick and fun read!
We have all head the stories of Snow White and Cinderella. But have you heard of Alice Bingley -Beckham, Reena Paruchuri and Molly Miller. They all have evil step mothers and when they meet each other at Putnam Mount MnKinsey they start the Poison Apple Club for wronged step mothers and plot their revenge.
