While reading this book, I recalled the theme to "Exodus" and remembered what life was like in the sixties. I'd forgotten the terms "hot to trot" and "rumble." I'd forgotten Sunday mass and that I never entered chuch without a hat or a veil or even a Kleenex bobby-pinned to my head. We still wore white gloves to high school dances. Life wasn't any easier or simpler then and I wouldn't go back to my teenage or early twenties again for anything. Many reviewers felt...more

I fist watched the movie then i read the book. I loved both. Reading this was so like my own life it was uncanny. There are so many women out there that can relate to this story and it kinda gives you a little hope. Thinking that if she did it and made it through ok so can you! The story was down to earth and real that's what i liked about it. I recommend this book to any young lady and the older ladies that just want to curl up with a good book that can take you back to yesturday.

Somehow I couldn't like this book. It was well written and funny, but I found the main character very unpleasant. I think the author should have more deeply explored the feelings her characters' actions. As it was, I didn't really care about most of the characters, especially the main one. I think this is an autobiography, and you'd think the author would know what was going on her own head. Maybe she just was really unpleasant, I don't know.

Not so much about riding in cars with boys, but the result of a rebellious girlhood, before abortion was legal.
Though at times I was horrified at the narrator's/main characters indifference to her child, it was indeed a rather touching story. Not to mention a must-read for anyone studying or just plain interested in feminism.

This book was OK. I expected a deeper exploration of the feelings behind a lot of the things that happened in the author's life, but most of the events were put forward in a very matter-of-fact "this is what happened" way, and I felt kind of cheated. I know it was turned into a movie and I am sure Drew Barrymore was able to inject more emotion and empathy into the character than what came across through just reading the book.

Maybe I should try reading this again....my problem with this book is that the author seems so whiney and justified in treating other people badly. It felt like she wanted to be mean and horrible to everyone and didn't want to take any responsibility for her own actions. I just didn't like her at all, and that dislike rolled over to the book. From page 1 it felt like everyone owed her something, and that got old quickly.

Short book, but its to-the-point. Maybe other people read it and are horrified by the thoughts she has regarding motherhood and how her life turned out, but I was able to relate on a very big level. Still, there were times when I thought "is this entire story just a bitch-fest?" I admit, however, that I did laugh. And I was nostalgic at times.

I picked up the movie off of a discount shelf and fell in love with it. When I found out that it was based off of a book, a biography, no less, I had to read it. It doesn't disapoint. There are times you want to slap Bev, there are times you want to cheer her. Either way, its a feel good book that ends way too soon.

This book is the author's own story about being a young single mother to a little boy. It is sad in parts, and very funny in others!
I really liked this book (and the movie too!).

If you enjoyed the movie made of this book with Drew Barrymore, you will really love the book. More details of course and some differences on how things turn out. Highly recommended.

this book really touched on what it's like being a parent of a child alone. I recalled a lot of similarities with my own mother, and with my parenting when I was alone.

decent storytelling about the struggles of a young mother trying to raise her son and herself at the same time in the vacuum of 1960s america.

This book isn't that good. Funny I guess. Whatever. I'm in it and I don't care about anything else. Five Stars.

i so loved this book. it's really a quick read, and even though it's depressing in parts, it's also uplifting as well.

This book was pretty good....I read it only because it was a prequel to Looking for Mary, which I loved!
