My six-year-old laughed out loud at this book! I plan on checking out the whole series. It's written from the point of view of a dog and outlines his experiences trying to trick some squirrels.
My daughter is an early reader, and I've struggled to find chapter books that are age appropriate. I was surprised that many early chapter books deal with experiences that only a 2nd or 3rd grader would fully comprehend. Everyone can relate to what a dog might go through, and I'm happy that when my daught...more

Have you ever wondered what your cat or dog might be thinking all day long? Then this is the book for you! It's written from a dog's perspective who thinks her name is "Down Girl," the neighbor dog (her friend) is "Sit," the owner's name is "Rruff," and the cat behind the fence is "Here Kitty, Kitty." Down Girl tells us all about her adventures as she chases squirrels, tries to keep the yard bird-free, and the cat out of the trash can from her own very unique perspective. **More in this series.*...more
Down Girl and Sit Smarter than Squirrels is the humors tail of two dogs as told from the point of view of the main character Down Girl. This book is excellent for teaching point of view. The adventures and misadventures of these two characters will keep kids laughing. The humor is also very appealing to adults as well. Simple black and white pen drawings add to the fun of the text throughout the book. This is the first book in the series written by this author.
Follows the adventures of Down Girl and Sit, two dogs who continually "help" their masters by eating food so squirrels can't get to it, scarring away the paper boy and chasing Here Kitty Kitty out of the yard. Anyone who has ever owned a dog is sure to find this book hilarious. Surely this answers the question of who is smarter, cats of dogs?
*I find this book so hilarious that I think I've reread it at least twice since the first time I read it.

Down Girl and Sit are two lovable dogs who may be smarter than squirrels, but the reader catches all the silly jokes. Down Girl's name is actually Happy, but her owner says "Down, girl" so much that the dog's sure it's her name. The story is all told from the dog's perspective, and this creates a lot of the jokes. I think this will be popular with the animal-loving 2nd grade set.
Recounts the adventures of a rambunctious dog who thinks her name is Down Girl and her next-door neighbor, Sit, as they try to keep the world safe from dangerous squirrels, the paper boy, and a frightening creature named Here Kitty Kitty.
Funny, charming book. Definitely recommended for young dog lovers.

This is a cute book for kids interested in animals and silly stories in general! The story is told from two pets points of view who believe their names are Down girl and Sit. It is interesting and entertaining to hear the story through their point of view and children with or without pets would love reading of their adventures.
A funny early chapter, narrated by a dog who thinks her name is "Down Girl." Good mentor text for point of view-- you really get into the head of the narrator. I am looking at my own dogs differently this morning and now know what they are thinking, thanks to Nolan! New chapter book readers and dog lovers will find it very funny.
I laughed out loud, and the bits I share with my husband and teen son made them do so, too. But it's not just nonsense - it has plenty of heart, too. The dog calls herself Down Girl, and her master is Rruff.
"Rruff is lucky I woke him when I did. In another hour the alarm clock would have gone off and scared him."

Of all the Down, Girl and Sit books, "On the Road" is still my favorite. However, young readers will still enjoy the other books as told from the perspective of a dog who believes her name to be "Down, Girl!" This would be a great choice for a chapter book read aloud as the chapters are short and entertaining.
Adorable transitional chapter book! Ms. Nolan gets inside the minds of her characters - the dogs - explores their feelings and attitudes from their POV. An absolute hoot! Highly recommended for kids who love their dogs. Well - even for the adults who love their dogs even though they might be driven crazy by them.
Down, Girl and her neighbor Sit are two dogs that are smarter than squirrels. They protect their owners from the terrors of birds and squirrels. The book is filled with innocent and the tongue in check humor that I can't resist. Perfect for children who are graduating to chapter books.
Why I started it: The title reminded of a skit by Bill Cosby.
Why I finished it: I have to agree with Down, Girl... dogs are just barely smarter than squirrels.

"down girl" is the narrator dog for these stories about her adventures with the next-door dog named "sit" and her owner named "rruff" and the cat next door named "here, kitty kitty." very silly, from the point of view of a dog sort of shenanigans.

Super cute book about Downgirl, his owner Ruff, his next door neighbor Sit, and the constant war going on with birds and squirrels in the backyard. See life from your dog's point of view. I'm going to have to read the sequels.
