Easier Said Than Done by Nikki Woods is a poignant new novel of love and risk, featuring a sassy and skillfully created cast of characters that are so full of life, they breathe, dream, and shout right off the page. Kingston Phillips, a beautiful entertainment executive in the fast-paced city of Chicago, has finally grasped the brass ring. But just as her friends and colleagues are buzzing with her success, Kingston must return to Jamaica for her grandmother's funeral. While there, childhood tragedies, heartbreak, AND family jealousies come back to haunt her, THREATENING TO SHATTER HER DREAMS. Not only does Kingston come face to face with the college sweetheart who left her heartbroken, but her grandmother names her executor of her will and forces her to make a life-altering decision. Does Kingston continue to reap her success in Chicago or stay in Jamaica to fulfill her grandmother's dream--possibly risking another broken heart? Can a modern woman find the balance between a successful career and the responsibilities of family and love while enduring the bumps along the way? Or is life really Easier Said Than Done?
Have you ever read a book that was so good and you were so connected to the characters until you didn’t want it to end? That’s how I felt as I was reading this book. Easier Said Than Done is a story of family love, family drama, relationship failure, relationship restoration and it revolves around a successful African American woman. I underline that because we WANT to read books like this. We NEED positive books like this. And here it is…………………… Kingston knows what she wants out of life, she knows who she loves in life and she knows how to get those things out of life. I can’t say enough about this book. It isn’t a long read (I really wanted more) but it gives you just enough.
The characters…….Kingston, Keela, Mama Grace, Bianca, Essence and of course there is Damon. Ms. Woods made sure that she drew detailed descriptive pictures of her characters. I mean, we never got to meet Mama Grace in the story (she died early on) but just reading about her life and things she said gave me a good look at her personality. I found myself saying “Mama Grace would never tolerate that” when certain characters would cause problems in the story. Even the love scenes were written so as not to be X-rated but you knew that the two people involved (Damon and Kingston), truly loved each other. I can’t say enough about this book. It is a good read, well written and it won’t disappoint. I do have some questions……..but for risk of spoiling it for those who have not read it yet, I will digress. If you read this review Nikki Woods, please know that a sequel is needed. ♥
“Easier Said Than Done,” Nikki Woods’ debut novel, is a deliciously written masterpiece that has the page turning elements of a “messy” soap opera.
Kingston Phillips is living the good life in Chicago as the lead executive for a newly established hip-hop label and has just signed her first client. After an evening of celebrating her current success with her friends, Essence and Keela, an early morning phone call from a relative in Jamaica brings her back to reality with the news of her grandmother’s death. When she returns to the island, not only is she informed of her grandmother’s last wish that she acts as the executor of the estate but learns that Dr. Damon Whitfield, the man who broke her heart ten years ago, is the one who cared for her grandmother.
Told in first person point of view, “Easier Said Than Done” is a good, slow read with characters so believable they jump off the page and act out the storyline for you. There are themes of betrayal, forgiveness, family, and friendship intricately woven into a beautifully written love story with tastefully erotic sex scenes. The settings were so descriptive I could feel the brisk chill of Chicago and the hot sun of Jamaica.
This is a definite weekend read that will make you re-evaluate the things that make you say: “Easier Said Than Done.” Freshman novelist, Nikki Woods proved with this literary escape that making the decision to do anything is all about getting it done.
Cute, not what I was expecting. This is a contemporary love story. Beautiful writing, not a faux pas to be found. It wasn't as salacious as I expected, no OMG moments. There were moments but not the nail biting kind. The story flowed at an even pleasant pace. I am having a hard time wondering how this would play on the big screen, maybe the small screen, The Hallmark of Lifetime channels. Spoiler: I did not want her with Damon, up to the last page I wanted her to find someone else, instead of settling with a man from her past.
my aunt wrote this book i highly recomend it to mature people written mostly for adults. tels a story of a love sick woman going back to kingston jamaica where she was born to find her grandmother dead her old love still around and the new unexpected company of a friends daugter through out the story she has many flash baks of her child hood were 1 of her friends died and she battles with that throug out the book a very good book deserving more stars than givin
Easier Said Than Done was enjoyable. It's a book about love and risk. After 10 years, Kingston comes face to face with the man that broke her heart. Can she forgive Damon and give their love another chance? This book is well written, the characters are relatable and it will entertain you.
Good book from beginning to end. I didn't know what to expect from this book because Kingston kept going back and forth with her feelings trying to protect her heart. I laughed, cried and laughed and then cried again. Nikki Woods really did a great job with this book. I look forward to reading more from her.
Loved this book ... Great debut looking forward to reading more from Nikki ... Took me from the cold winters of Chicago to the island of Jamaica and back again. I'm a sucker for a Good Love Story and Sistahs Girl Friendship /Kinship Stories ... Yes Nikki brought it on with this one.
