When four big chickens see a wolf sneaking near their coop, they run into the woods to hide. But for a bunch of big chickens, running away from danger isn’t as easy as it looks. As they continue on their way, they wonder:What if they get stuck in a ditch? What if they hit an iceberg in the lake? What if they step into a cow patty? Ewww!

"Big Chickens" tells a story of three chickens that are scared to do everything. From leaving the coop, to meeting cows the chickens seem to have their worst nightmare realized on every page. Finally, when they find themselves alone in a cave with a wolf, the chickens begin to jump and scream and finally scare the wolf away. They realize that they arent as scared as they think they are and turn the phrase "big chickens" into a good thing. This story is great for beginner readers because the text...more

One of the important parts of writer's workshop is modeling for your students. What this really means is that I need to work on writing my own children's book so that I can do it in front of my students. I need to literally show them what I mean. Writing a good children's book is less easy than you might think, in spite of how my kids make it look. Big Chickens is the first book to ever make me think I might can do it. Leslie Helakoski hit a grand slam with this on. Her pun, the excellent vocabu...more

" Big Chickens" is a humorous book about four chickens who are scared of seven things in the woods. Through out the story, the chickens are forced to overcome their fears because of the unique situations they are placed in. I would recommend this text for it's use of repetition and text-self connections. Children could also come up with their own story about animals. I would recommend this book for children in first through fourth grade.

Four chickens wake up one morning to a wolf peering in the chicken coop. Such "chickens" you've never seen! They take off at a run and don't stop until they hear that it's quiet. Then they realize they have to walk back. Along the way back they come across many things that they are afraid of: ditches, cows, water, caves and bats and that big hairy thing at the back of the cave!

Will they survive to get back to the chicken coop?

The four chickens thought they saw a wolf peeking to their house and the door shut so they ran to the woods. In the woods they faced things they were all scared of. Eventually they went into the cave and heard something. It was the wolf again. They ruffled and shuffled but the wolf ran out the cave. They are four big chickens. This book uses repetition for each scene the chickens come across and allows children to predict.

Very cute book. The author uses catchy phrases as she tells the story of 4 chickens who learned they were very big chickens indeed! The chickens flee the henhouse when they see a wolf. The book follows their adventures as they stumble into one mess after another (each mess caused by their own fear). In the end, they conquer their fears and become big chickens! My kids in story time love this book.

Big Chickens is the story of four chickens that are scared of just about everything. One day they see a wolf near their coop, so they decide to hide in the woods. Each new part of the woods brings something new to be scared of (a ditch, bats, a cave, etc.) until finally they scare the wolf themselves.

In terms of rule of threes, fun adjectives and alliterations, this is hands down the best picture book I've ever read and soooo funny too. The words lend themselves perfectly to fabulous illos and the repetition lines are brilliant! This came home with my son from the library and school and I am very tempted to go and buy it.

BIG CHICKENS is simply fun and silly. This story, about four lovable chickens acting like "big chickens," is full of repetition, assonance, consonance, action words, and word play. The bright, bold illustrations also contribute to the fun. It is a great read-aloud book that I am sure kids will enjoy over again.

We have checked this out three times in the past year. I think it is hilarious to read aloud. I can read it three or four times in a day. It makes a fun companion to another favorite, "Tough Chicks" by Cece Meng. I am definitely getting this book for my collection.

This book has fun illustrations of chickens who overreact when they are afraid. Their actions lead them straight into the situations they fear the most, and without even knowing it, they somehow survive. "Big Chickens" is a fun story about being brave!
Karla
The chickens in this book are "big chickens" who run away to hide when the wolf comes calling...along the way, they find lots of things to be scared of until they realize they are BIG chickens and don't have to be scared! Great book for calming fears.

This book was the Library of Michigan's Michigan Reads "One Book One Children's Book" selection (written by a Michigan author) a few years ago. The illustrations are amazing, but the story is quite wordy! Best read to school age children.
Lora
I like this one more each time I read it. It is hilarious! And I love the end when the chickens decide they are brave and strong and gutsy. "We've got chicken brains! We've got chicken guts!"

Helakoski’s humor will appeal to adults and children. Her use of verbal and visual repetition keep the story barreling along to a satisfying ending. Cole’s illustrations are a delight.

My 2.5 yo daughter wanted this one read every night. The chicken blunder into scary and scarier situations until they finally face their fear of the wolf and vanquish it.
Jennifer
Always a fun read-aloud, it never fails to produce a laugh or five! Re-read it this week in a search to find good storytime read-alouds for a first grade class.
Carla
Loved this book about chickens who bumble about, get into trouble, then get themselves out of trouble and are SO PROUD of themselves. Wonderful to read aloud.
Angela
This book is hilarious and so much fun to read aloud! And I see that there are more books about the Big Chickens! We will be picking them up for sure.

Four cowardly chickens have various mishaps-- in large part because they are so scared of everything.
