I think this is true for many people: their first introduction to the poetry of W. H. Auden was not through a classroom or casual reading, but through a film. In 1994, writer Richard Curtis quoted Auden’s poem Funeral Blues in his screenplay, Four Weddings and a Funeral. The popularity of that film exposed Auden’s work to millions, and saw Faber publishing a small book, Tell Me The Truth About Love, that included Funeral Blues, to cash in.

Meravigliose.

LULLABY

Lay your sleeping head, my love,
Human on my faithless arm;
Time and fevers burn away
Individual beauty from
Thoughtful children, and the grave
Proves the child ephemeral:
But in my arms till break of day
Let the living creature lie,
Mortal, guilty, but to me
The entirely beautiful.
Soul and body have no bounds:
To lovers as they lie upon

Some nice love poems by Auden and one would never know of his sexuality from the sentiments expressed in them. All written in the 1930s, in the questioning title poem he wonders "Will it alter my life altogether?" - well, yes, of course it will - and in the tail piece, Funeral Blues used in four Weddings and a Funeral (thus the cover design), he expresses the view "I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong." But, was he????

Calypso stands out for it´s bouncy lyrical quality, and so does Tell Me the Truth About Love, both are just great poems. This is a great little volume and would make a great gift, or introduction to Auden, though I am certain these aren´t his best poems, but nonetheless, well-beloved.

Funeral Blues
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,

Ten poems by Wystan Auden, what more could you say?

This little collection of poems is what got me started reading Auden's poetry. A wonderful little collection. His poetry is easy to read and enjoy, and makes him a good entry point for someone looking to getting into reading poetry.
